Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, 1903, Vol. 65 But it is further taught in this brief statement that it is folly to pay homage to the sun, the stars, to beasts or imitations of objects of nature, because all is created by the order of an intelligent Being far above and superior to all that has been created. Why not worship the Creator, instead of the creature? And everywhere, where this account of creation is accepted as true, divine worship is directed toward the true Godhead. Did ever a mere human sentence produce such an effect upon human history? Then it is very clear that the author of the Mosaic account, even if he was not aware of all that modern science knows, or claims to know about the universe, yet stated the absolute truth in all the matters of Which he spoke. And it ought to be clear that he could not have obtained his information from contemporary human sources. In Genesis the universe is not brought into existence instantaneously. There is a gradual unfolding, from the day the natural forces are set in motion until the earth is completed and made fit to be a human habitation. The entire narrative is in harmony with the most modern ideas on this subject. We see in this venerable account brought before our view, first the simplest forms of matter, all in apparent confusion, then the gradual arrangement into suitable abodes for living beings, and. Then these living beings rising higher and higher in the scale. And finally man is introduced, as the image of the Creator, the ruler of all the creatures upon the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: January 22, 1903 It would be better if every Elder who is a father rose to the dignity of his position, and officiated in his holy office within his family organization. He may call to his aid any others who are worthy holders of the requisite author ity in the Priesthood, but it is his privilege to stand as the head of his house hold, and to perform the ordinances pertaining to his family. The question arises, and has recently been presented in specific form, If an Elder performs the ordinance of naming and blessing his own child at home, is it necessary that the ordinance be repeated in the ward meeting? We answer, No the father's blessing is authoritative, proper, and sufficient. But every such case must be promptly reported to the Bishop of the ward, who will direct the clerk to make full and proper record of the matter, entering the name of the child, with date of birth and blessing, and all data as to parentage, etc., on the books of the ward. It is the duty of the Teachers and Priests in their house to house visitations among the people to see that all such reports are fully and promptly made. The repetition of the ordinance of naming and blessing children tends to diminish our regard for the authority and sanctity attending the father's blessing within the household. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: November 12, 1903 The speaker read a passage from the eleventh chapter of Deuteronomy and another from a section of the Doctrine and Covenants to show that the teach ings of the authorities of the Church to-day are the same as have always been taught by the servants of God. He admonished the Saints to daily read a chapter of the Bible, Book of Mormon, or the other standard Church works before their families. He felt anxious that we should impress the world with the fact that we love the Savior. He spoke of the influence of education, not only of the Church schools, but also of the district schools. He advised the Saints to send their children to the district schools, and not take them out at the sixth or seventh grade. He hoped that the Saints would see that their children are properly educated. He bore his testimony to the truth. The choir then sang, We thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet, and benedic tion was pronounced by Elder David H. Cannon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: February 5, 1903 Joseph Smith came as the messenger of Jesus Christ bringing with him additions to and an interpretation of that which either through disuse or mis use had become obscure. Being a child of light his teachings partake of that nature which children of light only can comprehend. Just as Paul said of the Jews: But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart, can be said with equal propriety concerning modern Christians in reading many of the revelations of the Old and New Testaments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: September 3, 1903 Now, in relation to the government of our Church; a word or two in order that we may understand it. In the first place, I lay down the principle, which I think is an infallible one - one that we must be governed by, - that is, that the priesthood after the order of the Son of God is the ruling, presiding, authority in the Church. It is divided into its various parts - the Melchizedek and the Aaronic - and all the quorums or councils are organized in the Church, each with special duties and special callings not clashing with each other, but all harmonious and united. In other words, there is no government in the Church of Jesus Christ separate and apart, above, or outside of, the holy priesthood or its authority. We have our Relief Societies, Mutual Improve ment associations, Primary associations, and Sunday schools, and we may organize, if we choose, associations for self-protection, and self-help among ourselves, not subject to our enemies, but for our good and the good of our people, but these organizations are not quorums or councils of the priesthood, but are auxiliary to, and under it; organized by virtue of the holy priesthood. They are not outside of, nor above it, nor beyond its reach. They acknowledge the principle of the holy priesthood. Wherever they are they always exist with the view of accomplishing some good; some soul's salvation temporal or spiritual. When we have a Relief Society, it is thus organized. It has its president and other officers, for the complete and perfect accomplishment of the purposes of its organization. When it meets, it proceeds as an independent organization, always mindful of the fact that it is such, by virtue of the authority of the holy priesthood which God has instituted. If the president of the stake comes into a meeting of the Relief Society, the sisters, through their president, would at once pay deference to him; would consult and advise with him, and receive directions from the presiding head. That head is the Bishop, in the ward, the president, in the stake, the presidency of the Church, in all the Church. The Young Ladies' and Young Men's associations, the Primary associations, and the Sunday schools are the same. All are under the same head, and the same rules apply to each. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 2, 1903 In public life, in social intercourse, in the struggle for supremacy, we are constantly lacerating the feelings of others, and the wounds inflicted upon our feelings may be a hundred fold more painful than those that tear asunder the flesh. But the duty of life is ever demanding that wherever wounds are found, be they wounds of the flesh or wounds of the heart, they shall be healed. So the business of life, after all, consists so largely in the duty of making things right, that we cannot permit ourselves to imagine for one moment that we have left nothing undone, or that in the brush and bustle of human activities some tender spot may not have been wounded or some feeling bruised. The cultivation of kindly thoughts towards others is always helpful in the art of healing. It is sometimes helpful to lift ourselves out of our own shells in which, by our surroundings and habits of thought, we are incrusted, and place ourselves in the positions which others occupy in life. Constant con sideration for the welfare and happiness of others is every day imposed upon us by the divine injunction, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: December 24, 1903 Christmas is the one time in the year that all Christian people delight to honor. It is a time when one looks back upon one's past and sees the mistakes, the failures, the successes of life. For it is a day of charitable feelings, and one craves that mercy from all which is such a consolation to the soul of man. The happiest periods of our lives lie back in those days when we believed that Santa Claus was a real, live man, and that on the eve of Christmas day, he would leave his home far in the north and make a journey around the world in a single night. Every home would be visited, and how strange it was to us when we always received the very things that we asked for. Years after, we found that our childish dreams were all a mistake, and Christmas lost some of its charms. But in those dreams of Christmas eve was to be found a beautiful lesson for both old and young. Our thoughts were always centered upon something mysterious, and we drew nearer to the Lord and listened to the words of our Savior with more willingness. Who does not remember the old story? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: February 19, 1903 This is in accordance with the doctrine of Christ as it is revealed in the New Testament; it is in accordance with the word of God as it has been revealed in the latter day through the Prophet Joseph Smith. God will not condemn any man to utter destruction, neither shall any man be thrust down to hell irredeemably, until he has been brought to the possession of the greater light that comes through repentance and obedience to the laws and command ments of God; but if, after he has received light and knowledge, he shall Sin against that light and will not repent, then, indeed, he becomes a lost soul, a son of perdition! The question is often asked, Is there any difference between the Spirit of the Lord and the Holy Ghost? The terms are frequently used synonymously. We often say the Spirit of God when we mean the Holy Ghost; we likewise say the Holy Ghost when we mean the Spirit of God. The Holy Ghost is a personage in the Godhead and it is not that which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. It is the Spirit of God which proceeds through Christ to the world, that enlightens every man that comes into the world, and that strives with the children of men, and will continue to strive with them, until it brings them to a knowledge of the truth, and to the possession of the greater light and testimony of the Holy Ghost. If, however, he receive that greater light, and then sin against it, the Spirit of God will cease to strive with him, and the Holy Ghost will wholly depart from him. Then will he perse cute the truth; then will he seek the blood of the innocent; then will he not scruple at the commission of any crime, except so far as he may fear the penalties of the law, in consequence of the crime, upon himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 22, 1903 I desire to say to this congregation that the work of the Lord, to the best of my knowledge, has continued to grow and spread since our last conference, last April, six months ago. I can see no evidence of weakness, or of weaken ing among the Latter-day Saints. Everywhere that I have had the pleasure and Opportunity of traveling to visit the people, we have found them earnest in their work, earnest in their faith, earnest in their devotion to the kingdom of God in the earth, and living according to the knowledge that they possess, agreeable to the will of the Father, as it has been made known to them. There have been great improvements. We 'have built and completed and dedicated many houses of worship throughout the various stakes of Zion during the six months that have passed. There are many more in the course of erection, and many will no doubt be completed and dedicated and ready for the service of the people before we shall assemble again six months hence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: March, 1903 The Scriptures present an array of examples of transgression that are fully corroborated by later experience. But the Lord doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men, but is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. He has given man the free agency to choose the good or evil in this life. He does not compel men to work righteousness, nor has he predestinated them to a life of sin. He has given commandments, which if kept, will bring peace and happiness to His children, but if not obeyed His blessings are sacrificed. 'tis true man is heir to the weaknesses of mortality, but these can, by perseverance, with the assistance of the Lord, be overcome. Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect, was the admonition of the Savior to His disciples. Christ was born a mortal man. He trod the thorny path Of life, overcoming all and by the things which He sufl'ered, became a pattern to all men. He is merci ful, yet He cannot look upon Sin with the least degree of allowance. Job says, If they obey and serve him, they Shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasure: but if they obey not, they Shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge (xxxvi: 11, Those of the world to - day who have not accepted the restored Gospel are in a lamentable condition. Being destitute of every vestige of divine authority, denying all revelation and inspiration, the people are buried in an ocean of darkness and unbelief. The eleventh hour repentance has harbored Sin and mocked justice, one of the greatest attributes of Deity. In spite of the search for pleasure, the lives of transgressors have been void of happiness, because in the midst of wickedness there is no happiness. If we walk about the streets of large cities we see depicted in many faces that their lives have been full Of iniquity and penury. The slums tell a most deplorable story. The Sight of public houses and other places of vice, with their supporters, brings sadness. Verily they present to view lives of men and women upon whose faces are stamped the hardness Of transgression. How careful then should we be to govern our lives aright in all manner of holiness. How careful to avoid sin, lest it prove to be the first link of that immeasurable chain which will drag us into everlasting perdition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: September 17, 1903 The inspired teachings of Moroni appeal to our reason. His great argument in favor of miracles, a part of which we have copied, is incontrovertible. If wonders were wrought by the faith of the Lord and His servants in former times, unless God alters, the same faith will bring forth similar blessings now. The absence of miracles cannot be accounted for by saying that knowledge is so extended that the need of these gifts has passed away. If Paul and his companions saw through a glass darkly, the best of men now can hardly claim a clearer vision; that which is perfect has not yet come. Jesus Himself being a doer of miracles, Christians will surely not maintain seriously that they are superfluous. On the face of this broad earth just as ignorant beings can be found now as were those with whom the Lord mingled, if it is thought that miracles were only for the ignorant. This, however, we will not admit. The Savior was no charlatan who played upon the ignorance of the people. It was among those who had faith that He performed His wondrous works. Where there was little faith He withheld His blessings. We can best conclude as Moroni declares that God ceased to do miracles among the children of men because they had dwindled in unbelief, departed from the right way, and no longer knew7 the God in whom they should trust.
