Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: April 8, 1909 It is the same with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Latter-day Saints. It is the gospel of the Son of God, revealed anew in this last dispensation, that has made the name of that man immortal, and the saints the people that they are. Without it, in all proba bility the name of Joseph Smith would not have been known out side the locality in which he resided. Scarcely a day passes with out adding lustre to the name of the latter-day prophet, and as the years go by it will become more and more illustrious. It was the same with President Brigham Young. It was Mormonism, or the gospel of Jesus Christ, which made him the great and mighty man that he was. The-same may be said of all the succeeding presidents of the Church and also of the Latter-day Saints as a whole. In their lives the power of the gospel has been plainly made manifest. What a change the gospel of Christ has Wrought in the lives of tens of thousands of men and women in these latter days; through obedience to its holy principles they have been literally regenerated, born again, made new creatures in Christ Jesus, so that they are able to say with Paul, we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation. How could we feel ashamed of that which has done so much for us? Well might the Savior say, He that is ashamed of me before men of him will I be ashamed before my Father and before the angels. What have we to be ashamed of, brethren and sisters? Nothing under the sun. On the contrary, we have much to -be proud of. IS the great revelation which the Father and the Son have given of themselves in this dispensation something, to be ashamed of? Verily, no. Think of the state of ignorance from which that glorious manifestation has delivered hundreds of thousands of the human family. What erroneous and absurd ideas we entertained concerning our Father in heaven before the glad tidings of that new revelation reached us. Before, we worshiped we knew not what; now we worship God intelligently, in Spirit and in truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: July 15, 1909 Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (matt. 4: This is a strong refutation of the claims made by some idle talkers that only a part of the Lord's teaching need be heeded. Those who hang on the words, the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin, ignore the fact that Christ did not teach the entire gospel plan every time he Opened His month. He suited His words to the occasion. For instance, when He came to John the Baptist and requested baptism at his hands, He taught only, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. (matt 3: Those words cannot by any reasonable stretch of the imagination be interpreted to mean that the one act or ordinance of baptism is sufficient to fulfill all righteousness. This one act cannot be left undone in the fulfillment of all righteousness; it is necessary along with every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. In this passage we have additional light upon the words of John, But if we walk in the light as he is in the light the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. Christ died for our sins, it is true, and redeemed us from the results of the Fall, doing for us that which we could not do for our selves, but having done that much He expects that we shall take advantage of the light which He brought into the world, and work out our own salvation as He has pointed out the way. Without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. God is no respecter of persons and is to be found by all, the rich as well as the poor, the great and the small, the saint and the sinner, if they will only seek Him in the right spirit, believing that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. But, how shall we go about seeking him? The earnest inquirer asks. The Holy Scriptures give the key: If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. And again: If any man will do the will of the Father he shall know of the doctrine. Seek wisdom of the Lord according to the admonition of the Apostle James and when God sends the light do not ignore it, no matter where it comes from. Do not be guilty of the idle words that many have uttered in these days, Can any good come from the Remember the foolish words of those people in former times who said, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 16, 1909 The self-made wise are often sincere, but sincerity sometimes blindfolds truth. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in'this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. (i. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: June 17, 1909 Moralists and students of human nature are agreed that most vices are close kindred. 'users of tobacco are often users of liquor and other stimulants. It would be a rare thing to find a user of tobacco Who is not a user of intoxicating drinks or some stimulating drug. Those who profane the name of Deity are in most cases lax in morals in other ways, so that we may safely conclude that all evil has a common source, the evil that destroys the mind as well as the evil that destroys the body. This book was released on 2017-03-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: June 24, 1909 President Alvin E. Jordan of the London conference welcomed the elders to Deseret. Said that the elders laboring here in London were meeting a better class of people than they had done in years past. That is to say, there are a greater number of educated people amongst them. He favored the idea of the elders lodging in better neighborhoods for the sake of the opportunities of meeting better people. Explained that this summer a stall has been secured in the Earl's Court Exposition which promises to be of unusual benefit to the work. We should keep ourselves clean and gentlemanly in appearance, so that we shall be fit to meet and mingle with the best people everywhere. We have forty-five elders in the London conference, which takes in one-third of the entire population of the British Isles. Twenty-four elders labor in London, and ten times that number could be appointed without trespassing upon each other's territory. President J. G. Johnston of the Scottish conference: I know that you are all sincere in dedicating what you have and are to the Lord's work, because if you were not you would not be here. You don't have to come here if you don't want to, but you do come because you desire to do your part in rolling on the kingdom. The pro gress in the Scottish conference is greater this year than we have any previous record of. We are quite successful in getting in the homes of the respectable class, and are, as a rule, treated with the utmost courtesy. The elders are now going out into the country districts. The people of Scotland are becoming more broad minded and intelligent in their consideration of the gospel than they used to be. Some of the fruits that we are reaping are of seeds sown by the elders years ago. There are twenty-eight elders laboring in the Scottish conference. Elders William S. Bassett, Walter P. Monson, William R. Worley and Walter P. Whitehead, the London quartette, sang, Praying For You. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
