Book Linguistic Studies on Latin

Download or read book Linguistic Studies on Latin written by József Herman and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains 26 articles (17 in English, 9 in French), selected from the papers presented at the 6th International Colloquim on Latin Linguistics, organized in Budapest. The authors share a common interest in applying to the study of Latin the conceptual framework of contemporary linguistics, mainly, but not exclusively, the theoretical tools of functional grammar and of the newest trends in pragmatics. Most studies envisage Latin in its synchronic functioning, but some papers embrace diachronic processes, from the archaic period to late and even pre-Romance stages. The volume is divided in several sections: “Phonology and Morpho-syntax” includes one paper on phonology (Fr. Biville) and three on morphology (G.C.L.M. Bakkum, G. Haverling, P. Manuel Suárez). Problems of the syntax of the simple sentence, often in relation to word order phenomena, are discussed in seven articles in Section 2 (Ch. Elerick, H. Fugier, Jan R. de Jong, Marius Lavency, E. Rizzi and P. Molinelli, Hannah Rosén, M.H. Somers). The grammatical problems of the complex sentence were examined by a great many participants of the colloquium, and the third section, “Subordination”, presents eight of those papers (Gu. Calboli, P. De Carvalho, P. Cuzzolin, J. Dangel, S. Mellet, J.A.H. Mensink, P. Ramat, E. Vester). The section on text cohesion and particles — an almost traditional field of research in new Latin linguistics — includes papers by A.M. Bolkestein, C. Kroon, R. Risselada, and M.E. Torrego. The final section, “Problems of the Lexicon”, devoted to the historical-comparative or semantic descriptive analysis of lexical elements, contains four articles (R. Coleman, B. García Hernández, L. Nadjo, Chr. Touratier). An Index of Names closes the volume.

Book Latin Historical Phonology Workbook

Download or read book Latin Historical Phonology Workbook written by Malte Liesner and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been designed for students of Latin and Indo-European-Linguistics and can be used for university courses or self study in order to learn the complex issues of Latin historical phonology within a short time. The implemented one-step-method allows the user to understand in detail every step of a derivation which leads from an Indo-European preform to a Latin word because in each step of the derivation a number refers to a complete list of Latin sound laws. The user can complete missing word forms in over 1000 gaps of phonological derivations. In each teaching unit the left page contains the explanations and descriptions of Latin sound laws and the right page offers exercises to train the learning matter. Sound laws, which are explained in other units, are additionally given on the exercise pages. Answers to all the exercises are included in the book. The comprehensive index includes all Latin sound laws and is referred to in every step of a phonological derivation as well as in all the explanations. The index can be used for reference as well. Consideration is taken that all explanations firstly use Latin data for reconstruction and other languages only where needed. In the chapters about linguistic fundamentals the basic principles of Latin linguistics are introduced which are the analysis of phonemes, accentuation and syllabification as well as the modelling of diachronic sound change. The following chapters present the evolution of Latin vowels and focuses on vowel lengthening and shortening, vowel contraction, vowel weakening in interior syllables and the Latin monophthongizations. The next chapters present in detail the transformations of Latin consonants such as assimilations, dissimilations, the simplification of geminated consonants and the loss of consonants in initial, medial or final position. After the following chapter about analogical changes, the book focuses on the evolution of the Indo-European sound system to the Latin sound system and presents the transformations of Labiovelars, Laryngeals, Media Aspirata and syllabic resonants. A comprehensive chapter about reconstruction inaugurates the beginner with the principles of historic linguistic reconstruction. The numeric index presents all discussed sound laws and is a great source for quick information. All the important data can be seen at a glance. The appendix offers tables about the chronology of the sound laws, characteristic features of Latin languages epochs as well as an overview of the Indo-European languages.

Book The Influence of Latin to the English Language Morphological and Lexical Features

Download or read book The Influence of Latin to the English Language Morphological and Lexical Features written by Rafael Damas Quiles and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: Distinction: 9.5/10, University of Jaén, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the enormous productivity of Latin in the English language throughout time. Influences, however, will be remarked on the lexical and morphological fields. Therefore, due to length restrictions, other aspects such as phonology will be overlooked. Firstly, the general linguistic, historical and social contextualization of Latin will be described. In other words, it will be analyzed how Latin came into contact with English. Afterwards, different periods of influence will be covered, as well as the morphological heritage that the English language took from Latin, ranging from derivation (for example prefixation and suffixation) to inflectional and compound processes. In all cases, the most illustrative examples will be offered. Finally, the etymological explanation will help to establish certain parallelisms between Latin and English. Thereby, it will be essential to state the idea, that English and Latin share numerous similar features, is still present, despite belonging to different language families, as well as their own peculiarities, which is to say, those properties that make both languages different in comparison to other ones.

Book The Phonology of Gallic Clerical Latin After the Sixth Century

Download or read book The Phonology of Gallic Clerical Latin After the Sixth Century written by Carl C. Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Phonology of Gallic Clerical Latin After the Sixth Century: An Introductory Historical Study Based Chiefly on Merovingian and Carolingian Spelling and on the Forms of Old French Loan-Words; Thesis Presented to the Division of Modern Languages of Harvard University in Candidacy for the Degree of Ph; D Burges, Bordeaux, Avignon, Alby or Toulouse before the tenth century, but adds that it is hard to believe that the reforms had no effect in these regions in the ninth century. A curious document (t. 231) reflecting grammatical ignorance almost Merovingian, apparently written in leberry - i. E., in Indre or Cher, bears the spellings territurio and accepio, as late as 939. In the absence of confirmatory evidence, however, it will scarcely be suspected that the document has a serious chronological importance. A remarkably anomalous diploma, written at York in 960, shows many spellings like prepusito, nasirum, pussessio, munachus, also the form univirsa (t. Since these forms, especially pre pasito, univirsa, appear to be neither Merovingian, Carolingian nor English, one is almost inclined to suspect the authenticity Of the document, in spite of its apparent genuineness. The orthography of the cartulary of Cluny, which is the most important Eastern collection, is often puzzling because it was evidently written by badly educated scribes, and because Of our ignorance as to the early history of the vernacular of the region; but it seems not unlikely that the phonetic reform was here accomplished soon after it took place in Central France. The clerks of the Center from whom We have documents Of later date than the eighth century were accomplished Latinists, spelling the dead language with almost impeccable accuracy. Not so, however, the provincial scribes from whom diplomas have come down from the ninth century and later, who did not enjoy such superior training, and sometimes made significant orthographic errors. Considerable differences must have existed between the Latin pronunciation Of the Center and that of the provinces down to the time of the Renaissance. We are, however, justified in assuming that the main features were the same in each case, particularly in the pronunciation of groups of consonants which did not exist in the vernacular Of either Of the regions in question.
