Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light on the Last Things This expansion of natural knowledge is needed to form a basis for the reception and understanding of spiritual knowledge. The grand analogies of the universe hold good throughout. The former revela tions of heavenly truth were conformed to the limited range of men's natural knowledge. There is just as vast a universe of new spiritual knowledge to be opened and revealed to human thought, as these later centuries have opened of natural science. But the natural must come first, to enlarge the range of ideas, break up narrow prejudices, illustrate the intel ligence, quicken the thirst for knowledge, and fur nish visible analogies in which exalted truths and great spiritual realities may be seen and viewed as in so many mirrors of re ection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Hell, Heaven And if some people apparently pass away most peacefully, this is because nature, exhausted by suffering, has no longer the force to struggle with death. We know from the testimony of Our Re deemer Himself that no agony is like the agony of death. Although throughout the whole course of His sorrowful Passion, He was tortured in a terrible manner, yet all the martyrdom He endured was not to be compared with what He suffered at the moment of His death. This we gather from the Gospels. Nowhere do we find that at any period of His life the greatness of the pains He bore extorted from Our Lord a cry of anguish. But when the moment came for Him to expire, and the ruthless hand of death rent His Heart asunder, we read that He cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. Hence it is evident that at no period of the Passion did Christ suffer so acutely as at the most painful separation of His sacred soul from His blessed body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
