Book excerpt: Having given up her only child and her very identity to become a priestess in ancient Crete, an idealistic young woman struggles to find meaning in the day-to-day life of the temple; but when she is chosen to be the next High Priestess, she must call on both mystical and practical skills to protect her people from the encroaching Mycenaeans, who want to destroy the Minoans' way of life. Their island steeped in ritual and tradition, unchanged for centuries, the Minoans keep to their ways as the world around them moves on. Within the temple of Malia, Aria upholds the practices of her ancestors and the values that have kept her people-the children of the Great Mother Goddesses-safe and happy for generations, even when doing so chafes against her ambition. She knows that the rites of journeying, divination, and sacrifice are the foundation of the people's relationship with the gods. And the public ceremonies and feasts are the basis of the temple's relationship with the lay people: the balance between the divine and the material, the people's assurance that the High Priestess and her clergy will take care of them and provide for them, the way they have always done. Aria knows that as long as Ida's children take care of each other, the Great Mother will take care of them. But their tradition of sharing their goods and themselves with each other and the gods becomes a liability when the people from the mountains in the north of the mainland decide that wealth is something to be hoarded rather than given away. The newcomers' demands increase along with their greed, and the Minoans are hard pressed to maintain their traditional ways. What will become of a peaceful trading culture when their rivals decide to arm themselves and take what they want?

Book excerpt: In this newly revised and updated second edition of Labrys and Horns, you'll find the pantheon, rituals, symbols and practices of Modern Minoan Paganism. MMP is a revivalist tradition that connects the deities of ancient Crete with modern Pagans in a living spiritual practice. With a pantheon headed by a triplicity of mother goddesses who embody the three sacred realms of land, sky, and sea, MMP calls us to remember a time when women were valued as equals to men, when the Great Mothers took care of all their children, and when the sacred touched every person every day of their lives. Minoan spirituality is so relevant to our times, when we're doing our best to move forward and away from inequality and oppression. This book can help you build relationships with the Minoan gods and goddesses and bring their blessings into your life, and from there, into the larger world.

Book New Light on Phaistos Disc

Download or read book New Light on Phaistos Disc written by Roberta Rio and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clay disk that looks like a child's game has become a headache for archaeologists and historians. And for the throngs of tourists who visit Crete, it is fascinating for its mystery. This is a completely new interpretation of the meaning of the Phaistos Disc, which opens new horizons never before imagined by archaeologists and historians. The utilized interpretative methodology is new as well: It presents a new way of investigating artifacts that are mysterious due to their age; direct evidence isn't possible and interpretation is difficult. The ancients' access to ideas was much different than now. The difficulty of understanding lies in the code of communication, which is no longer understood and in the contents themselves, since neither of the two falls within our wealth of knowledge. The result with the classic historical-archaeological method can only be "un-understanding". This book presents one possible solution. If we are willing to mix "Sacred and Profane", "Rational and Intuitive", and "Scientist and Artist", we can reach the result of this book: The unveiling of a meaning that would otherwise remain mysterious to the mind of modern man.

Book Ariadne s Threads

Download or read book Ariadne s Threads written by Bernice R. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to deal comprehensively with the construction, significance, and function of the full range of garments of Aegean women and related attire of men from the Neolithic to the end of the Bronze Age. As valuable as precious metals, a significant commodity of trade, luxurious in design and decoration, Minoan dress rivaled that of its Near Eastern and Egyptian neighbors. Yet, Aegean costumes and textiles have been among the least understood of the major artistic achievements of the Minoan civilization. Since ancient Aegean textiles and garments have not survived, the study collects, analyzes and compiles a typology of the corpus of garments represented in sculpture, frescoes and glyptic to glean evidence for construction. It further considers the manufacturing techniques of extant Egyptian clothes, comparable images of ancient Near Eastern garments, textile manufacture on the warp-weighted loom, and dress documented in Mycenaean Linear B, Greek and Near Eastern texts. The combined evidence is buttressed by experiments in replicating Aegean and related Near Eastern garments as well as the weave structures of patterned cloths and bands. The replicated clothes are arranged on live models who assume the various positions of the clothed figures in the frescoes and sculptures they imitate, thereby bringing the ancient figures to life. This all inclusive study not only illuminates every aspect of Aegean costume, but the resultant understanding of dress and the way it drapes on the body has led to new restorations of the missing parts of fragmentary garments on figural sculptures and wall paintings.

Book Ariadne s Thread

Download or read book Ariadne s Thread written by Laura Perry and published by Moon Books. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myths of ancient Crete, her people, and their gods twine through our minds like the snakes around the priestess's arms in those ancient temples. They call to us across the millennia, asking us to remember. In answer to that call, Ariadne’s Thread provides a window into the spirituality, culture and daily life of the Minoan people, and commemorates the richness of a world in which women and men worked and worshiped as equals. In these pages, the glory of Crete once again springs to life; the history, the culture, and most of all, the intense spirituality of these fascinating people and their gods can inspire and transform our modern ways of thinking, worshiping and being. The ruined temples and mansions of ancient Crete may crumble along the coastline of this tiny island, but Ariadne’s thread still leads us into the labyrinth and safely back out again.

Book The Mysterious Ritual Enclosed in the Phaistos Disc and the Kernos Stone

Download or read book The Mysterious Ritual Enclosed in the Phaistos Disc and the Kernos Stone written by Roberta Rio and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes there are places that we find particularly attractive; places where we want to stay because something that is beyond our understanding calls to us. What I am about to describe to you belongs to this type of situation. The Phaistos Disc is a mystery. It belongs to that group of objects which are not interpretable through the classic historical-archaeological method. The Kernos Stone, however, is not considered to be a mystery: it is simply thought to be a surface for offerings. For traditional scholars, it is obvious what unites the Phaistos Disc to the Kernos Stone: they are both artifacts that belong to the archaeological heritage of Crete. Nothing more. But if we link these two objects in our imagination and, indeed, put one on top of the other, perhaps in the same place and at a specific day of the year, we would not only get the solution to an enigma, but also the magic combination to open the mystery that unites them and encloses them: an ancient ritual in which they were used together.

Book Seals and Sealing in the Ancient World

Download or read book Seals and Sealing in the Ancient World written by Marta Ameri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of seals and sealing practices have traditionally investigated aspects of social, political, economic, and ideological systems in ancient societies throughout the Old World. Previously, scholarship has focused on description and documentation, chronology and dynastic histories, administrative function, iconography, and style. More recent studies have emphasized context, production and use, and increasingly, identity, gender, and the social lives of seals, their users, and the artisans who produced them. Using several methodological and theoretical perspectives, this volume presents up-to-date research on seals that is comparative in scope and focus. The cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach advances our understanding of the significance of an important class of material culture of the ancient world. The volume will serve as an essential resource for scholars, students, and others interested in glyptic studies, seal production and use, and sealing practices in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Ancient South Asia and the Aegean during the 4th-2nd Millennia BCE.

Book excerpt: A Times Literary Supplement Best Book of the Year A vivid, novelistic history of the rise of Athens from relative obscurity to the edge of its golden age, told through the lives of Miltiades and Cimon, the father and son whose defiance of Persia vaulted Athens to a leading place in the Greek world. When we think of ancient Greece we think first of Athens: its power, prestige, and revolutionary impact on art, philosophy, and politics. But on the verge of the fifth century BCE, only fifty years before its zenith, Athens was just another Greek city-state in the shadow of Sparta. It would take a catastrophe, the Persian invasions, to push Athens to the fore. In Phoenix, David Stuttard traces Athens’s rise through the lives of two men who spearheaded resistance to Persia: Miltiades, hero of the Battle of Marathon, and his son Cimon, Athens’s dominant leader before Pericles. Miltiades’s career was checkered. An Athenian provincial overlord forced into Persian vassalage, he joined a rebellion against the Persians then fled Great King Darius’s retaliation. Miltiades would later die in prison. But before that, he led Athens to victory over the invading Persians at Marathon. Cimon entered history when the Persians returned; he responded by encouraging a tactical evacuation of Athens as a prelude to decisive victory at sea. Over the next decades, while Greek city-states squabbled, Athens revitalized under Cimon’s inspired leadership. The city vaulted to the head of a powerful empire and the threshold of a golden age. Cimon proved not only an able strategist and administrator but also a peacemaker, whose policies stabilized Athens’s relationship with Sparta. The period preceding Athens’s golden age is rarely described in detail. Stuttard tells the tale with narrative power and historical acumen, recreating vividly the turbulent world of the Eastern Mediterranean in one of its most decisive periods.
