Book The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs

Download or read book The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs written by R. H. Charles and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excerpt from the INTRODUCTION - General Character of the Book: The book purports to give the last words, at the approach of death, of each of the twelve patriarchs to his sons. It is evident that the general idea of the book is based upon Jacob's last words to his sons as recorded in Gen. xlix. 1-27. Just as Jacob portrays the character of his sons and declares to them what shall befall them, so in our book each of the patriarchs is represented as describing, in some sense, his own character and as foretelling what shall come to pass among his posterity in the last times. From this latter point of view the book partakes of the character of a prophetic-apocalyptic work. In six of the testaments, those of Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphthali and Joseph, there is a certain correspondence between our book and Gen. xlix. regarding the characters of the patriarchs; as for the remaining six patriarchs no such correspondence exists.

This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller Named one of the Best Books of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle Finalist for the George Washington Prize Finalist for the Library of Virginia Literary Award A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Selection "An important book…[R]ichly rewarding. It is full of fascinating insights about Jefferson." —Gordon S. Wood, New York Review of Books Hailed by critics and embraced by readers, "Most Blessed of the Patriarchs" is one of the richest and most insightful accounts of Thomas Jefferson in a generation. Following her Pulitzer Prize–winning The Hemingses of Monticello¸ Annette Gordon-Reed has teamed with Peter S. Onuf to present a provocative and absorbing character study, "a fresh and layered analysis" (New York Times Book Review) that reveals our third president as "a dynamic, complex and oftentimes contradictory human being" (Chicago Tribune). Gordon-Reed and Onuf fundamentally challenge much of what we thought we knew, and through their painstaking research and vivid prose create a portrait of Jefferson, as he might have painted himself, one "comprised of equal parts sun and shadow" (Jane Kamensky).

Excerpt: ...shall gather; and the name " Christian," which was first, is the name that will be last, when Christ and Christian shall be all and in all. Are we gathered into the blessed fold? As the shadows left on earth of those that have gone up higher multiply, do we aspire more and more to eternal day? Are we less under the attractions of earth? Does truth seem to us every day more true? Do we welcome her, not as a necessity, but as a bride? CHAPTER IX. THE NIGHT SIDE OF LIFE. " The more we lire, more brief appear J Our life's succeeding stages: A day to childhood seems a year, And years like passing ages. " When joys have lost their bloom and breath, And life itself is vapid, Why, as we reach the falls of death, Feel we its tide more rapid? " Heaven gives our years of fading strength Indemnifying fleetness, And those of youth a seeming length, Proportioned to their sweetness." " And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou 1 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.--Gen. xlvii. 8, 9. The question put by Pharaoh to Jacob seems at first a trivial one; but when well weighed, it.will appear one that every man ought to put and answer for himself, " How old am I?" We know not how long we may live, but we do know how long we have lived. The past of our life is all luminous in the light of memory; the future is a mystery that no man can penetrate, and that no sagacity can forecast. "How old is my friend? my sister? my brother? my wife? is not the question. We are each ready enough to...

Beginning with the rebellion in heaven, the author shows why sin was permitted, why Satan was not destroyed, and why man was tested; gives a thrilling description of man's temptation and fall, and rehearses the plan of salvation. The life of each of the Patriarchs from Adam to King David is carefully scanned, and from each a lesson is drawn. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt, the incidents of their forty years' wanderings, the building of the Sanctuary, the entrance into Canaan, the subjection of the land, and the continued history of the Israelite nation down to the close of David's reign are all related in an interesting, narrative style that charms the reader and opens up to him new beauties in the Scriptural record.
