Very few, for example, will care to know that the strike of large masses of foliated gneiss is parallel with the major axis of the lake, or that the names of the thirty-nine species of fish inhabiting it are Monde, Mota, Lasa, Kasibe, Molobe, Lopembe, etc., etc. In preparing this book the aim has been to retain every thing necessary to the continuity of the narrative and a full understanding of Dr. Livingstone's travels, adventures, dis coveries and experiences, and all else which would be likely to interest any considerable portion of intelligent American readers: and it is believed that for them, at least, the Journals lose nothing of their interest or depth of meaning at the compiler's hands.
