What bounded the court-yard? Whereabout did the out-houses com mence? A few bricks only lay as representatives of that which was so stately and so spacious. Death does not Shrink up his human victim at this rate. The burnt ashes of a man weigh more in their proportion. Book Elia and the Last Essays of Elia

Download or read book Elia and the Last Essays of Elia written by Charles Lamb and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays of Elia is a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb; it was first published in book form in 1823, with a second volume, Last Essays of Elia, issued in 1833 by the publisher Edward Moxon. The essays in the collection first began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 and continued to 1825. Lamb's essays were very popular and were printed in many subsequent editions throughout the nineteenth century. The personal and conversational tone of the essays has charmed many readers; the essays "established Lamb in the title he now holds, that of the most delightful of English essayists."[1] Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." Charles first used the pseudonym Elia for an essay on the South Sea House, where he had worked decades earlier; Elia was the last name of an Italian man who worked there at the same time as Charles, and after that essay the name stuck. American editions of both the Essays and the Last Essays were published in Philadelphia in 1828. At the time, American publishers were unconstrained by copyright law,[2] and often reprinted materials from English books and periodicals; so the American collection of the Last Essays preceded its British counterpart by five years.[3] Critics have traced the influence of earlier writers in Lamb's style, notably Sir Thomas Browne and Robert Burton[4] - writers who also influenced Lamb's contemporary and acquaintance, Thomas De Quincey. Some of Lamb's later pieces in the same style and spirit were collected into a body called Eliana.[5]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Essays of Elia Your lines are not to be understood reading on one leg. They are sinuous, and to be won with wrestling. I do assure you in sincerity that no thing you have done has given me greater satis faction. Your Obscurity, where you are dark, which is seldom, is that of too much meaning, not the painful Obscurity which no toil of the reader can dissipate; not the dead vacuum and floundering place in which imagination finds no footing: it is not the dimness of positive darkness, but of distance; and he that reads and not discerns must get a better pair of spectacles. I admire every piece in the collection. I cannot say the first is best: when I do so, the last read rises up in judgment. To your Mother, to your Sister, to Mary dead, they are all weighty with thought and tender with sentiment. Your poetry is like no other. Those cursed dryads and pagan trumperies of modern verse have put me out of conceit of the very name of poetry. Your verses are as good and as wholesome as prose, and I have made a sad blunder if I do not leave you with an impression that your present is rarely. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Elia (Chosen) If you would read the works of Charles Lamb, you must know Charles Lamb the man, for he is the principal character in his own writings (at leash-those that we remember now and really care to read), and our love for the works and our love for the man are one and inseparable. The best a 'critic or biographer can do is to arrange Lamb's letters and essays in suitable order, and add a few hard facts here and there to make the connection plain. In'the heart of the old corporate city of London is a series of groups of buildings called the Inns Of Court. There were and still are four Of these Inns, which are societies or corporations for the education Of law students. In their Old-fashioned Way they correspond to our law schools. The courts are there, too, and the lawyers, young and Old, have chambers there, where, amid ancient traditions and somewhat gloomy surroundings, they live and even keep their families, or at least their servants' families. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Elia: And Other Pieces After leaving school Lamb lived at home, and worked first as a young clerk under his brother John in the South Sea House. Thus recollections o the South Sea House as well as of Christ's Hospital are in the Essays of Elia, which idealize with a wise practical humour the outward circumstances that shaped Lamb's inner life. On the sth of April, 1792, his father's kindly employer, Mr. Salt, obtained for Charles Lamb, then seventeen years old, a clerkship in the Accountant's Office of the East India Company. About three years afterwards, when Charles Lamb's age was twenty, and his home was still with his father and mother, the father, with weakened intellect.
