Book The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians Classic Reprint written by Frederic Louis Otto Roehrig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language of the Dakota or Sioux Indians Previously to his going to that out-of-the-way region he had happened to make himself in some measure acquainted with the languages of several of the Indian tribes, particularly with the Chippewa tongue and he then at once directed his attention to the language of those Indians in whose immediate neighborhood he was going to reside for a while, namely, the Sioux Nation, or Dakotas. It would take a whole volume to record his varied experience with those interesting tribes and the result of his ethnological and linguistic researches during the time he lived among them. On this occasion, however, he will content himself with presenting to the reader only a very few faint and cursory glimpses of merely such matters as may arise in his recollection, and as pertain to the language of these people. It is hoped that his elucidation of desultory topics of this nature will not prove altogether uninteresting to the ethnologist or philological inquirer. Father Biard, in the Relation of 1611, mentioned these autmoins of i'acadie, qui sont commes lcurs prestres. With the prenominal prefix, wut, Miem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of American Indian Languages, Vol. 2: With Illustrative Sketches In its general phonetic character, at least as regards relative harsh ness or smoothness of acoustic effect, Takelma will probably be found to occupy a position about midway between the characteristically rough languages of the Columbia valley and the North Californian and Oregon coast (chinookan, Salish, Alsea, Coos, Athapascan, Yurok) on the one hand, and the relatively euphonious languages of the Sacramento valley (maidu, Yana, Wintun) on the other, inclining rather to the latter than to the former. Book Introduction to the Study of Sign Language Among the North American Indians

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Sign Language Among the North American Indians written by Garrick Mallery and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Sign Language Among the North American Indians: As Illustrating the Gesture Speech of Mankind Eleven years ago ethnographic research among North American Indians was commenced by myself and my assistants while making explorations on the Colorado River and its tributaries. From that time to the present such investigations have been in progress. During this time the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution placed in my hands a large amount of material collected by its collaborators relating to Indian languages and other matters, to be used, in conjunction with the materials collected under my direction, in the preparation of a series of publications on North American Ethnology. In pursuing this work two volumes have already been published, a third is in press, and a number of others are in course of preparation. The work originally begun as an incident to a geographical and geological survey has steadily grown in proportions until a large number of assistants and collaborators are engaged in the collection of materials and the preparation of memoirs on a variety of subjects relating to the North American Indians. The subject under investigation is of great magnitude. More than five hundred languages, belonging to about seventy distinct stocks or families, are spoken by these Indians; and in all other branches of this ethnic research a like variety of subject-matter exists. It will thus be seen that the materials for a systematic and comprehensive treatment of this subject can only be obtained by the combined labor of many men.
