Book The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Language of the Dakota Or Sioux Indians Classic Reprint written by Frederic Louis Otto Roehrig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language of the Dakota or Sioux Indians Previously to his going to that out-of-the-way region he had happened to make himself in some measure acquainted with the languages of several of the Indian tribes, particularly with the Chippewa tongue and he then at once directed his attention to the language of those Indians in whose immediate neighborhood he was going to reside for a while, namely, the Sioux Nation, or Dakotas. It would take a whole volume to record his varied experience with those interesting tribes and the result of his ethnological and linguistic researches during the time he lived among them. On this occasion, however, he will content himself with presenting to the reader only a very few faint and cursory glimpses of merely such matters as may arise in his recollection, and as pertain to the language of these people. It is hoped that his elucidation of desultory topics of this nature will not prove altogether uninteresting to the ethnologist or philological inquirer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Weeks Among Some of the Sioux Tribes of Dakota and Nebraska: Together With a Brief Consideration of the Indian Problem We found ourselves about midday, June 17th, at the little town of Chamberlain, Dakota, a place of some three hundred inhabitants, lying upon the east bank of the Missouri river. To this distant point we had come by the request of Bishop Hare, in order to gain some knowledge of the schools and missions established, under his direction, by the Episcopal Church, among the Sioux Indians. As we left the train, our eyes sought eagerly for the Rev. Luke Walker, a full-blooded Sioux and a presbyter of the Church, who was to have met us at the station and thence to have conducted us to his mission among the Lower Brules, four miles distant, and within the limits of the reservation upon the other side of the Missouri. Our search was in vain, and not until late in the day, after we had made two ineffectual attempts to cross the river, did we find our friend, who, in company with Rev. Mr. Burt, had been detained later than was his expectation, at a distant point. Mr. Burt is one of those who came to this country ten years ago, from Berkeley Divinity School, after hearing William Welsh plead the Indian cause. He.has ever since labored among the people as a faithful missionary and has acquired not only a knowledge of their character and customs, but also great proficiency in the Dakota tongue. We crossed the Missouri as the sun sank behind the reservation hills, with the blue sky above us from which the storms that had risen suddenly during the afternoon, and threatened an hour before, had now dropped to the horizon. Beneath us rolled a fierce muddy stream in whose waters, swollen by spring rains, our oars labored slowly. Book The Dakota Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dakota Language Classic Reprint written by Stephen Return Riggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dakota Language Accent in Dakota is quite important. The meaning of many words depends upon it as, for instance, ma-ga, a field, and ma-ga, a goose. The principle of accenting seems to be determined from the beginning of the word, not from the' end. In the case of two thirds, or perhaps three fourths, of all the words in the language, the accent is on the second syllable from the beginning. The greater part of the remainder are accented on the first syllable there are a few cases of polysyllables accented on the penultimate. In words of four or more syllables, a secondary accent follows on the second syllable after the primary. Hence it is not unfavorable to the composition of poetry; but, as almost all words end in a vowel or nasal n. Rhyme can have very little variety. The language is sometimes figurative from necessity and sometimes from choice. In the latter case, their figures are often far fetched. When they ask for an ox in soldier language, they call him a dog and when a chief begs for a horse, he often does it under the figure of moccasins. Their war songs and others seem to have but little of either the Spirit or form of true poetry. A few words make a long song and, in general, their meaning is just the opposite of that naturally conveyed by the words. For example: nam ing a young man who has acted very bravely, killed an en emy and taken his Scalp, they say, you are a fool; you let the Chippewas strike you. And this is understood to be the highest form of eulogy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Taming of the Sioux Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Taming of the Sioux Classic Reprint written by Frank Fiske and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Taming of the Sioux No historian of prominence should presume to ask the public to take his work as the last word on the subject which it treats. There is bound to be some one who will find inaccuracies and deficiencies, and the whole work may be condemned on account of them. There never was a history written that is absolutely correct, so I suppose mine must be a little off on a few trivial matters. A deep student of the ethnology, phonology, psychology and anthropology of the Sioux may (I say may advisedly) find these defects. To him I offer no apologies, he has enough ologies now, and I don't wish to burden him with more of them. History is essentially didactical, indeed it is, and we soon tire of its prosiness, its unpicturesque display of data and long-winded statistics. However, there are some individuals who are ultra-pedantic, and to whom nothing appeals but what is strictly utilitarian. To such persons I commend certain parts of this work, while to the others - the great majority - the balance of it may prove entertaining. The absence of humor I greatly deplore, for it just seems that I cannot think up anythin' funny. But the reader may find a great deal to laugh about after all, if he is inclined to be critical. The old timers, God bless 'em, always take an important part in an historical work. But they seldom agree with each other. There is a psychological reason for this, as there is for most anything we do not clearly understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
