I've got to be God, the Judge and the jury; I've got to be the father, grandfather, the bishop the pastor and the priest. I've got bottoms to wipe, teardrops to blot, fights to referee, the whole life of a landlord is a menagerie. When the lives of all my renters have been mended my days not through, it's just begun. Now I have the holes in the walls to repair, doors to fix, toilets, phones, and TV's too. Hold on that's not it yet, I still have the lawns to mow, trees to prune, fences to repair and last but not least weeds to pull. Now after all this I'm dam lucky if I can collect the rent.

Book The Man in My Basement

Download or read book The Man in My Basement written by Walter Mosley and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Blakey is a young black man whose life is slowly crumbling. His parents are dead, he can't find a job, he drinks too much, and his friends have begun to desert him. Worst of all, he's fallen behind on the mortgage payments for the beautiful home that's belonged to his family for generations. When a stranger - a white man - offers him $50,000 in cash to rent out his basement for the summer, Charles needs the money too badly to say no. He knows that the stranger must want something more than a basement view. Sure enough, he has a very particular - and bizarre - set of requirements, and Charles tries to satisfy him without getting lured into the strangeness. But he sees an opportunity to understand the secrets of the white world, and his summer with a man in his basement turns into a dark game of power and manipulation.

Book A Thematic Exploration of Twentieth Century Western Literature

Download or read book A Thematic Exploration of Twentieth Century Western Literature written by Jiang Chengyong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century witnessed dramatic changes in terms of the structure of society, economics, politics, science, and technology, driving a change in Western literature from traditional to modern: old value systems were shattered; writing approaches and aesthetics changed; writers began to explore the psychological world and expand the discussion of humankind and modern civilization. This title takes classic literature by European and American authors of the twentieth century as research objects in order to comprehensively explore their thoughts, values, aesthetics, and narratives. Six major themes are used as units for analysis—existential meaning, self-identity, war and human nature, growing confusion, love and marriage, and anti-utopia. The authors argue that the six themes extend the themes of traditional literature and epitomize the unique characteristics of twentieth-century Western literature. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of literature, especially Western literature and twentieth-century literature.

Book Goldoon and Professor

Download or read book Goldoon and Professor written by Bahman Shahzadi and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stash of historic letters is the starting point for this intimate view of life in pre-Revolutionary Iran. The authors, Jackie and Bahman Shahzadi, use excerpts of their old letters to peer into the past and examine the relationship that became a 35-year marriage. For young, American-born Jackie, the challenges of adapting to life in Iran were complicated by marrying into Zoroastrianism, a religion forbidding both conversion and interfaith marriage. Their life in Iran spans the political life of the Shah from coronation to overthrow. This conversational narrative chronicles the effects of these outside influences on this bicultural union, including, ultimately, exile from Iran in the midst of the Revolution.

Download or read book Ecologies of Inequity written by Sancha Doxilly Medwinter and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2023-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Ecologies of Inequity, Sancha Doxilly Medwinter tells the story of how the racially and ethnically diverse, immigrant, and urban poor disaster survivors lose ground to their White, middleclass-to-affluent and Black middle-class homeowner neighbors during official disaster response. Medwinter presents analyses from 120 conversational and expert interviews with disaster responders and survivors in New York City, beginning as early as twelve days after the November 2012 landfall of Superstorm Sandy. The settings are Carnarsie, Brooklyn, and the Rockaway peninsula, which experienced six to eight feet of flooding. The color- and class-blind assumptions of disaster responders and the labyrinthine process of obtaining a FEMA grant combine to exclude and increase the psychological burden of urban poor disaster survivors. Similarly, the locational decisions and volunteer service perimeters uncritically replicate the segregation logics of urban spaces. Part of this story explains how the chronically poor repeatedly get displaced by the machinery of official disaster response. One reason is the introduction of a race- and class-blind disaster "logic of response" that caters to the needs of the newly created class of "disaster victims," while displacing the "logic of service," which typically attempts to address the needs of the chronically poor.

Book Local Hero

  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book Local Hero written by Jack Swenson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have asked me why I don't write a novel. Well, one or two people have asked me that. I always reply that I am a sprinter and not a long-distance runner. Indeed, I prefer the fifty to the hundred-yard dash. The short form is a lovely thing. For years I have admired its economy, its punch, its subtlety. It's a perfect vehicle for me because I like to cut to the chase, and I don't like long-winded descriptions. Then, too, I see life as a comedy rather than a tragedy. Tragedy works better with lots of words; whoever heard of a five-hundred-word tragedy? On the other hand, comedy can be short and sweet. Reader Comments on Menage a Trois by Jack Swenson "Short and interesting, really enjoyable. Hard to put the book down, knowing another little gem follows." "Courageous writing." "The author is a compassionate person who is very aware of the world around him." "Swenson has a knack for understated humor." "I am a fan!" "Brilliant!" "An amazing work."
