Book excerpt: Elmore Barce's 'The Land of the Miamis' is a compelling novel that delves into the cultural and historical intricacies of the Miami tribe. Barce's writing style is rich in descriptive detail, allowing readers to vividly imagine the landscapes and traditions of the Miamis. Set in the 1800s, the book explores the struggles faced by the Miami people as they navigate colonization and the encroachment of European settlers. The narrative is both engaging and educational, shedding light on a lesser-known aspect of Native American history. Barce's attention to historical accuracy and his ability to evoke a sense of empathy towards the Miami people make this book a valuable contribution to the genre of historical fiction. Elmore Barce, a historian with a passion for Native American culture, drew inspiration from his research and firsthand accounts to craft 'The Land of the Miamis'. His dedication to preserving the stories of indigenous peoples shines through in this masterfully written novel. I highly recommend 'The Land of the Miamis' to readers interested in immersive historical fiction and those seeking a deeper understanding of Native American history.

Book This Land Is Our Land

Download or read book This Land Is Our Land written by Alex Stepick and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2003-05-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those opposed to immigration, Miami is a nightmare. Miami is the de facto capital of Latin America; it is a city where immigrants dominate, Spanish is ubiquitous, and Denny's is an ethnic restaurant. Are Miami's immigrants representative of a trend that is undermining American culture and identity? Drawing from in-depth fieldwork in the city and looking closely at recent events such as the Elián González case, This Land Is Our Land examines interactions between immigrants and established Americans in Miami to address fundamental questions of American identity and multiculturalism. Rather than focusing on questions of assimilation, as many other studies have, this book concentrates on interethnic relations to provide an entirely new perspective on the changes wrought by immigration in the United States. A balanced analysis of Miami's evolution over the last forty years, This Land Is Our Land is also a powerful demonstration that immigration in America is not simply an "us versus them" phenomenon.

Book excerpt: The Land of the Miamis An Account of the Struggle to Secure Possession of the North-West from the End of the Revolution until 1812 by Elmore Barce PREFACE In presenting this book to the general public, it is the intention of the author to present a connected story of the winning of the Northwest, including the Indian wars during the presidency of General Washington, following this with an account of the Harrison-Tecumseh conflict in the early part of the nineteenth century, ending with the Battle of Tippecanoe. The story embraces all of the early efforts of the Republic of the United States to take possession of the Northwest Territory, acquired from Great Britain by the Treaty of 1783 closing the Revolutionary War. The whole western country was a wilderness filled with savage tribes of great ferocity, and they resisted every effort of the government to advance its outposts. Back of them stood the agents of England who had retained the western posts of Detroit, Niagara, Oswego, Michillimacinac and other places in order to command the lucrative fur trade, and who looked upon the advance of the American traders and settlers with jealousy and alarm. They encouraged the savages in their resistance, furnished them with arms and ammunition, and at times covertly aided them with troops and armed forces. In other words, this is a part of that great tale of the winning of the west. We are well aware that there is a very respectable school of historians who insist that the British took no part in opposing the American advance, but the cold and indisputable facts of history, the words of Washington himself, contradict this view. England never gave up the idea of retrieving her lost possessions in the western country until the close of the War of 1812.
