Book excerpt: Part five is an assessment of the prospects of the Act in bringing about development in Uganda within the institutional and political context of the Land Act debate and the ambiguities embedded in the Act. [...] Under the terms of the1900 Agreement, of the total of 19,700 square miles of the land of Buganda, more than 8000 square miles, the mailo, were allocated to the king and private individuals mainly chiefs, notables, the church and the colonial state (crown land). [...] While this shortcoming has been taken care of by the various studies for the imple- mentation of the Land Act in the various districts, the starting point should have been the national dimensions of the land question. [...] The role of the state has changed in the area of management as the locus of control is shifted to the Uganda Land Commission and below it, District Land Boards and Land Committees. [...] The major concern here is the idea of appointment of the members of the Commission by the President.

Download or read book This Land Is Not For Sale written by Lotte Meinert and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although violent conflict has declined in northern Uganda, tensions and mistrust concerning land have increased. Residents try to deal with acquisitions by investors and exclusions from forests and wildlife reserves. Land wrangles among neighbours and relatives are widespread. The growing commodification of land challenges ideals of entrustment for future generations. Using extended case studies, collaborating researchers analyze the principles and practices that shape access to land. Contributors examine the multiplicity of land claims, the nature of transactions and the management of conflicts. They show how access to land is governed through intimate relations of gender, generation and belonging.

Matian van Soest looks at the malaria epidemic in the peri-urban zones of Uganda's capital Kampala against the backdrop of recent socio-ecological transformations. Based on long-term ethnographic research, the book provides a holistic picture of the malaria epidemic in central Uganda, revealing the highly localized character of an epidemic that once spanned across almost the entire globe. Understanding, and ultimately tackling the disease, requires an appreciation of the social, political, as well as ecological circumstances that frame this epidemic.

Book Structural Stability in an African Context

Download or read book Structural Stability in an African Context written by Robert Kappel and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Stability is a particular focus for reconceptualizing developmental strategy and development aid and has provoked unfore-seen responses in the course of a recent, mainly German debate. This debate began late in 2000 when a number of prominent German scholars in African Studies initiated a policy dialogue through a widely circulated and publicly discussed "Afrika Memorandum" centred on the notion of structural stability. Its arguments are relevant not only to a German audience but offer stimulating and thought-provoking inputs into the debate in the wider European context on bilateral and multilateral relations with Africa. This Discussion Paper presents the revised contributions to a Consultative Workshop on Structural Stability in an African Context that took place at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala on 31 March and 1 April 2003.

Book Armed Struggle and Democracy

Download or read book Armed Struggle and Democracy written by Martin Legassick and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of the concept(s) of armed struggle for the notion(s) of democracy in South(ern) Africa is the focus of this paper. Originally submitted to a conference on (Re-) Conceptualising Democracy and Liberation in Southern Africa, held in Windhoek, Namibia during July 2002, it argues from the point of departure of the personal involvement of the author in the issues raised. The author was part of a group which criticised the strategy of armed struggle in the ANC. With this paper he inspires a debate, which can claim relevance for current issues of democracy in South Africa and the Southern African region more generally. Given the degree of personal involvement of its author, this analysis is contemporary history based on personal insights, and provides arguments for a necessary discussion.
