Download or read book The Life of Rabbi Benjamin and Family with the Mystery of Beer Sheva and Next Generation Continues Son of Abdul and Grace written by Morris D. Pollard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story has been with me for a long time—what the Israelite had to do until Jesus Christ became the sacrifice for us. There were cattlemen or ranchers who provide animals for food and wool, so this is one of those stories about a family that provided animals to the city for food and the story of a young lad wanting to do the L-rd G-d’s work while he was on this earth. He became a rabbi and had a family that became a doctor and rabbi and a housewife who solves mysteries and loves mankind. Please note that the words L-rd and G-d or L-rd G-d has the O missing because this is a story about the Jewish religion, so I give respect to their tradition of leaving the O out of the spelling of these words. I am a Gentile and practice the Protestant form of religion and have no Israelite blood or Jewish blood in my veins other than the gaffing into the vine by the blood that was shed on the cross of Calvary. Anything that you find that is not right, it is an error on the part of the author, for I have only the King James Bible and what I glean from the internet websites and the books in my library and the power of the Lord Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit to guide me. This is where this information came from. Any name or names that is used in this book is made up to match a person or persons it is assigned to and given as a connection to any person, living or dead, for this is a work of fiction and has nothing to do with any family, living or dead, with these names or that time period.

Download or read book The Books of Jacob written by Olga Tokarczuk and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 993 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORKER “ESSENTIAL READ” “Just as awe-inspiring as the Nobel judges claimed.” – The Washington Post “Olga Tokarczuk is one of our greatest living fiction writers. . . This could well be a decade-defining book akin to Bolaño’s 2666.” –AV Club “Sophisticated and ribald and brimming with folk wit. . . The comedy in this novel blends, as it does in life, with genuine tragedy.” –Dwight Garner, The New York Times LONGLISTED FOR THE 2022 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, TIME, THE NEW YORKER, AND NPR The Nobel Prize–winner’s richest, most sweeping and ambitious novel yet follows the comet-like rise and fall of a mysterious, messianic religious leader as he blazes his way across eighteenth-century Europe. In the mid-eighteenth century, as new ideas—and a new unrest—begin to sweep the Continent, a young Jew of mysterious origins arrives in a village in Poland. Before long, he has changed not only his name but his persona; visited by what seem to be ecstatic experiences, Jacob Frank casts a charismatic spell that attracts an increasingly fervent following. In the decade to come, Frank will traverse the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires with throngs of disciples in his thrall as he reinvents himself again and again, converts to Islam and then Catholicism, is pilloried as a heretic and revered as the Messiah, and wreaks havoc on the conventional order, Jewish and Christian alike, with scandalous rumors of his sect’s secret rituals and the spread of his increasingly iconoclastic beliefs. The story of Frank—a real historical figure around whom mystery and controversy swirl to this day—is the perfect canvas for the genius and unparalleled reach of Olga Tokarczuk. Narrated through the perspectives of his contemporaries—those who revere him, those who revile him, the friend who betrays him, the lone woman who sees him for what he is—The Books of Jacob captures a world on the cusp of precipitous change, searching for certainty and longing for transcendence. In a nod to books written in Hebrew, The Books of Jacob is paginated in reverse, beginning on p. 955 and ending on p. 1 – but read traditionally, front cover to back.

Book excerpt: She was tall, dark and one hell of a handsome, sexy woman, still roaring to go even in her late forties. She bounced through the bar wearing her tight pink sweater, tight black leather pants and high-heeled, high-rising black boots. Her nails were long like a cat and red. Her eyes burned with desire. There, a man of good build, wide chest, and tight rump, stood. Not a bad face, she thought. Yes, he might do. From: Swing A Soft Stick. So begins one of Elias Sassoon's often humorous, thoughtful, and entertaining stories in Sassoon's Friends.

Download or read book The Joke S on Me written by Jim Purdy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While debating Sir Winston on the House of Commons, Lady Astor says, Sir Winston, if I were your wife, I should poison your tea. Sir Winston replies, Madam, if I were your husband, I would drink it. In 1066, a Battle of Hastings ensued in England, eventually causing two languages to merge and form modern English. In The Jokes on Me, English language aficionado Jim Purdy provides an entertaining tutorial of jokes, explanations, and associated vocabulary based on this historical transition. Purdy bases most of his jokes on sex, politics, and religion, depending on the unexpected as he leads serious students of languages to the other side of English. While including jokes not intended for the easily offended, Purdy relies on the experiences he acquired during his frequent travels throughout Europe as he shares jokes as diverse as the world around us. Purdy spares no one from his humorous jabs, including Lady Astor and Sir Winston, the Lone Ranger, and the Pope. The Jokes on Me is a step-by-step guide that will encourage both novice and experienced students of languages to gain a new appreciation of the American sense of humor while simultaneously enhancing their vocabulary and linguistics abilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAN A HANDFUL OF HEROES STOP AN APOCALYPSE CENTURIES IN THE MAKING? Escaped gladiator-slave Simon of Gitta returns to Judea — during the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth — on a mission to avenge the deaths of his parents, seeking revenge in blood against the Roman officials who committed the murders and sold Simon into slavery. But as Simon travels the Holy Lands with his mentor Dositheus and their students Menander and llione, they gradually become entangled in a complex occult plot designed to call down a monstrous alien entity to herald a new aeon on Earth. The mysterious time traveler John Taggart (from Tierney's The Winds of Zarr) also becomes involved with Simon as their separate quests converge toward a common goal of saving all life on Earth from extinction. But can a handful of travelers really thwart a covert scheme backed by the power of the Roman Empire? As the apocalyptic supernatural events slowly unfold, Simon and his allies are in a race against time to prevent the devastation of the world. Using mystery cults and early Christian Gnosticism as his vehicle, with meticulously researched Roman history and Biblical scholarship, this is author Richard Tierney’s magnum opus: an epic Lovecraftian alternate history dark fantasy novel that features Tierney's most famous characters, Simon of Gitta and John Taggart. This novel will appeal to fans of historical fantasy and sword & sorcery fiction in the vein of Robert E. Howard, and the elements of cosmic horror and the Cthulhu Mythos will satisfy many fans of H.P. Lovecraft.
Download or read book The Rabbi Finds Her Way written by Robert Schoen and published by Stone Bridge Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rabbi gig. People have no idea what it's all about. The Rabbi Finds Her Way follows Pearl Ross-Levy's first two years as associate rabbi at a large Reform congregation in California. This compelling, inspiring, and often funny narrative weaves the experiences and insights that shape the young rabbi as she finds her way through the challenges of her profession. We see Pearl's lifelong friendship with a high school classmate—the victim of a serious car accident—evolve as it opens her eyes to the world of religion. And whether she's discussing women's rights in the Bible with a bat mitzvah student, meeting the man she'll soon marry, encouraging a congregant with Alzheimer's to tell a joke whose punch line he's forgotten, or struggling with the anguish of a man who believes he's unwittingly committed a murder, Pearl reveals her intelligence, empathy, grit, and humor. The Rabbi's strength and faith grow as she continues to see that God does, indeed, work in strange ways.

Download or read book American Rabbis Second Edition written by David J. Zucker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a broad-brush approach describing the realities of life in the American rabbinate. Factual portrayals are supplemented by examples drawn from fiction—primarily novels and short stories. Chapters include: ♣Rabbinic Training ♣Congregational Rabbis and Their Communities ♣Congregants’ Views of Their Rabbis ♣Women Rabbis [also including examples from TV and Cinema] ♣Assimilation, Intermarriage, Patrilineality, and Human Sexuality ♣God, Israel, and Tradition This book draws upon sociological data, including the recent Pew Research Center survey on Jewish life in America, and presents a contemporary view of rabbis and their communities. The realities of the American rabbinate are then compared/contrasted with the ways fiction writers present their understanding of rabbinic life. The book explores illustrations from two hundred novels, short stories, and TV/cinema; representing well over 135 authors. From the first real-life women rabbis in the early 1970s to today’s statistics of close to 1,600 women rabbis worldwide, major changes have taken place. Women rabbis are transforming the face of Judaism. For example, this newly revised second edition of American Rabbis: Facts and Fiction reflects a fivefold increase in terms of examples of fictional women rabbis, from when the book was first published in 1998. There is new and expanded material on some of the challenges in the twenty-first century, women rabbis, human sexuality/LGBTQ matters, trans/post/non-denominational seminaries, and community-based rabbis.
