Book The Lady Believed To Be From England

Download or read book The Lady Believed To Be From England written by Patrick Emre and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08-19 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lady Believed to be from England is a dramatic story set in the stunningly beautiful island of Cyprus. More than just another murder mystery, with some dodgy dealings perpetrated by the Cyprus Judiciary – Firstly that authority’s failure to recognise a sinister piece of corruption, collusion, and treachery under its nose. – Eventually that same authority’s realisation of the hurt felt by those who were the innocent victims. It tells that story of a Cyprus born lady so much loved by all who meet her, and how against all odds, she has pulled about her a great sense, and an even greater ability to help others to hold up their heads. There is much to know about her and her family from her late husband, and those of her second husband. It was this larger than life fellow who recognised the seeds of greatness within her and set about culturing these until they blossomed into an even more marvellous bloom than he had perceived. There are many sides to learn of this vibrant man who laughs when others might cry and creates an aura around him which others want to share. Their blissful life together appears to be something of Utopian proportions and seemed untouchable. However their love for each other and life in general is about to be shrouded in the darkest clouds containing a mixture of criminal injury, corruption, and authoritarian negligence. Now the great resolve they had always previously displayed would be tested to the utmost. Throughout this book there are several digressions which should be thoroughly enjoyed. These are not simply meant as ‘space fillers’ but are solely intended to provide the reader with an insight into the lives of the families and characters. I am sure you will find it interesting and at times very amusing. I must thank my good friend Maggie Muir for her assistance in piecing the story together, and my darling wife who patiently listened for twenty years of promises that one day I’d write a book.

Book A Bengali Lady in England by Krishnabhabini Das 1885

Download or read book A Bengali Lady in England by Krishnabhabini Das 1885 written by Somdatta Mandal and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translation from Bengali to English of the first ever woman’s travel narrative written in the late nineteenth century when India was still under British imperial rule with Bengal as its capital. Krishnabhabini Das (1864–1919) was a middle-class Bengali lady who accompanied her husband on his second visit to England in 1882, where they lived for eight years. Krishnabhabini wrote her narrative in Bengali and the account was published in Calcutta in 1885 as England-e Bongomohila [A Bengali Lady in England]. This anonymous publication had the author’s name written simply as “A Bengali Lady”. It is not a travel narrative per se as Das was also trying to educate fellow Indians about different aspects of British life, such as the English race and their nature, the English lady, English marriage and domestic life, religion and celebration, British labour, and trade. Though Hindu women did not observe the purdah as Muslim women did, they had, until then, remained largely invisible, confined within their homes and away from the public gaze. Their rightful place was within the domestic sphere and it was quite uncommon for a middle-class Indian woman to expose herself to the outside world or participate in activities and debates in the public domain. This self-ordained mission of educating people back home with the ground realities in England is what makes Krishnabhabini’s narrative unique. The narrative offers a brilliant picture of the colonial interface between England and India and shows how women travellers from India to Europe worked to shape feminized personae characterized by conventionality, conservatism and domesticity, even as they imitated a male-dominated tradition of travel and travel writing.
