Book excerpt: The number of cultural parks has been steadily increasing in recent years throughout the world. But what is a cultural park? This book provides a detailed answer to this question and sets out the basis for an academic debate that moves beyond the technical narratives that have prevailed to date. It is important to open up the topic to academic scrutiny given that cultural parks are becoming widespread devices being employed by different institutions and social groups to manage and enhance cultural and natural heritage assets and landscapes. The main problem in dealing with this topic is the predominant lack of theory-grounded, critical reflection in the literature about cultural parks. These remain largely conceived as technical instruments deployed by institutions in order to solve an array of problems they must deal with. As cultural parks are generally regarded as positive and constructive tools whose performance is associated with the preservation of heritage, the overcoming of the nature/culture divide, the reinforcing of identity and memory and the strengthening of social cohesion and economic development, this book critically explores these issues through the analysis of the literature on cultural parks. In addition, it provides a novel theoretical conceptualization of cultural parks that is connected with, and underpins, a tentative methodology developed for their empirical analysis.

The database has its roots in the work of Edgar T. Wherry, John M. Fogg, Jr., & Herbert A. Wahl, the Atlas of the Flora of PennsylvaniaÓ (Wherry et al. 1979), published by the Morris Arboretum. Over a period of 40 years, Wherry & his colleagues gathered data from the major Pennsylvania herbaria & manually placed a quarter of a million dots on over 3500 maps (Fogg 1944). The Pennsylvania Flora Database retains the emphasis on specimen-based, site-specific data. The checklist of included taxa has undergone extensive review to reflect recent taxonomic & nomenclatural revisions. Questionable specimens have been re-evaluated with the result that several taxa included in earlier works were dropped. Recent discoveries have been added & distribution data has been updated. This vol. also includes collections made in the 1990s in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI), the state heritage program. The maps present the accumulated collection of information for each taxon as represented in the herbaria. Illus., reprinted 1996.

Book excerpt: In 1969, in the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Dickson City, Olyphant, and Throop school districts merged to become the Mid-Valley School District. Soon afterward plans were made to build the new Mid-Valley Junior-Senior High School. The plans were put on hold indefinitely. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry condemned the elementary schools in Olyphant and Dickson City and ordered them closed. Some residents wanted a new school built; others wanted the old schools renovated. Lively debate ensued. The reasonable people prevailed. The Mid-Valley Secondary Center was completed in 1981. This book has two parts, History and Memoir. The History part of the book consists of factual data about the schools of Olyphant from 1855 through 1969. The author intertwines some stories that his father, his grandfather, and his great-uncle had told him. These stories add a personal perspective to the history. He also includes some information about Dickson City and Throop schools. This is background information for the Memoir part of the book. This is a narrative about his public school education starting in 1969 with kindergarten, and concluding with graduation in 1982. He also includes an Epilogue with a snapshot of the current status of items discussed.
