Book excerpt: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was established under the Kyoto Protocol to help countries achieve sustainable development and meet their reduction commitments for emissions of greenhouse gases. The CDM allows developed countries to acquire certified emissions reductions (CERs) by undertaking greenhouse gas mitigating projects in developing countries. This report looks at the technical, financial and institutional aspects of the CDM. It discusses the structure of the CDM's investment function, the various sources of financing available for CDM projects and issues relating to its institutional structure and governance. It finds that the effect of CDM investments could be substantial, if used effectively and with an integrated approach to the other Protocol mechanisms.

Book excerpt: The adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in December 1997 was a major achievement in the endeavour to tackle the problem of global climate change at the dawn of the 21st century. After many years of involvement in the negotiation process, the book's two internationally recognised authors now offer the international community a first hand and inside perspective of the debate on the Kyoto Protocol. The book provides a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the history and content of the Protocol itself as well as of the economic, political and legal implications of its implementation. It also presents a perspective for the further development of the climate regime. These important features make this book an indispensable working tool for policy makers, negotiators, academics and all those actively involved and interested in climate change issues in both the developed and developing world.

Book Reading the Kyoto Protocol

Download or read book Reading the Kyoto Protocol written by Raoul Weiler and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kyoto Protocol became law in February 2005--eight years after its conception as a framework for reducing emissions and a full four years after the United States abandoned it. But while President George W. Bush embarrassed much of the scientific community by challenging the veracity of the greenhouse effect, and thus the impetus for Kyoto, officials elsewhere expressed far different concerns. Reading the Kyoto Protocol explores their qualms and objections to everything from Kyoto's controversial policies on emissions trading to the question of a "post-Kyoto era." Contributors include internationally known philosophers, researchers, and environmentalists.

Book The Kyoto Protocol and Beyond

Download or read book The Kyoto Protocol and Beyond written by Wybe Th. Douma and published by Asser Press. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the results of two conferences: 'The Kyoto Protocol and beyond: A legal perspective', organised by the University of Siena on 10-11 June 2006, and 'Tackling Climate Change: An appraisal of the Kyoto Protocol and options for the future', held at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague on 30-31 March 2007. These conferences focused on the legal aspects of the Kyoto Protocol implementation and the post-2012 regime. Experts in European and international environmental law shared ideas and experiences gained so far by the European Union, individual states (including Germany, the Netherlands, the Western Balkans, CIS countries including Russia and developing countries) and private entities in the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and its flexible mechanisms. Much attention was given to the design of the future regime, from the perspectives of both the European Union and developing states.

The book is divided into four sections: measurement, including a strong emphasis on uncertainty analysis, as well as offering practical case studies of individual buildings and a comparison of materials; management, focusing in particular on the perspective of designers and contractors; mitigation, which identifies some specific design strategies as well as challenges; and finally global approaches, six chapters which describe in authoritative detail the ways in which the different regions of the world are tackling the issue.

Book Energy Production and Management in the 21st Century

Download or read book Energy Production and Management in the 21st Century written by E. R. Magaril and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 1340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussing the future of energy production and management in a changing world, this book contains the proceedings of the first international conference on Energy Production and Management in the 21st Century – The Quest for Sustainable Energy. Developed societies require an ever increasing amount of energy resources, which creates complex technological challenges. The idea is to compare conventional energy sources, particularly hydrocarbons, with a number of other ways of producing energy, emphasising new technological developments. The challenge in many cases is the conversion of new sources of energy into useful forms, while finding efficient ways of storing and distributing energy. Energy policies and management are of primary importance to achieving sustainability, and need to be consistent with recent advances made in energy production and distribution. The book will also discuss the energy use of industrial processes, including the imbedded energy contents of materials, particularly those in the built environment. Energy production, distribution and usage, result in environmental risks which need to be better understood. They are part of the energy economics and relate to human environmental health as well as ecosystems behaviour. Topics covered include: Energy production; Energy management; Energy policies; Energy and economic growth; Energy efficiency; Hydropower; Wind energy; Solar energy; Nuclear energy; Biomass and biofuels; Energy storage; Hydrocarbons; Gas production; Processing of oil and gas; Energy conversion; Energy savings; Energy in the built environment; Energy networks; Pipelines; Energy balance; Energy economics; Heat, pumping systems; Environmental risk; Safety management; Emissions; C-O2 separation and storage; Imbedded energy; Energy and transport; Energy use in industry; Energy transmission and distribution; Energy industry efficiency; Energy security; Training in energy and sustainability.
