Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Souvenir, 1921, Vol. 1 Not only has the School grown larger so far as numbers are concerned, but it has made long strides forward in other ways. In 1918 this school was but a three - year high school, not coming up to the State standard. Last ses sion the course was raised to a standard four-year course and the School was listed upon the State accredited column This year we attained a still higher standard and were notified last November that we had been accredited on the list of the Southern Accredited Schools of the Association of Southern Col leges. This is an enviable position, and one that we wish to maintain. But our physical equipment must increase also if we hope to stay in the Southern Acc'redited list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crimson and Grey, 1921, Vol. 6 A preface is usually a long, dry article at the beginning of a text book, the fore-runner of the real battle of phrases. Now, this preface is intended to be neither long nor dry. This year's Crimson and Grey is a student publication and must be read as such If the writer of a narrative loses his story, if a drawing is out of proportion, or if the poems have a limp in their feet, recall that the said writer was probably recalled from his ideal compo-sing to the cruel plane of facts in the school-room by some irate teacher who could not know she was interrupting a masterpiece. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy Years of Progress in WashingtonThe equable climate of Washington lays a solid foundation for good health and longevity. The absence of extreme heat or cold as shown by the official report to be found in this volume extending over a period of sixty years, abundantly proves this fact. Then it is scientifically proven that a moist atmosphere is a clean atmosphere. That when rain falls, or fog prevails, the air, so to speak, is washed and all impurity, if any. Is removed, of which there is precious little coming from off the wide sweep of the Pacific Ocean and carried inland far beyond the eastern confines of the State by the prevailing winds. We are blessed with pure water. The snows upon the high mountain ranges feed the rivulets and springs, the first forming rivers, the latter bursting out in springs on widely distributed areas, even on the islands of the sound at high elevation and along the fifteen hundred miles of shore line beaches of Puget Sound. Supplies of the precious fluid, as one may say, being found almost everywhere. The cities of the State have taken advantage of the opportunity offered and have safeguarded the watershed from which to draw their supplies and have secured an abundance of this elemental conservator of health pure water.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Author : Grace Steele Woodward
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 1963

Download or read book The Cherokees written by Grace Steele Woodward and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the Five Civilized Tribes of Indians the Cherokees were early recognized as the greatest and the most civilized. Indeed, between 1540 and 1906 they reached a higher peak of civilization than any other North American Indian tribe. They invented a syllabary and developed an intricate government, including a system of courts of law. They published their own newspaper in both Cherokee and English and became noted as orators and statesmen. At the beginning the Cherokees’ conquest of civilization was agonizingly slow and uncertain. Warlords of the southern Appalachian Highlands, they were loath to expend their energies elsewhere. In the words of a British officer, "They are like the Devil’s pigg, they will neither lead nor drive." But, led or driven, the warlike and willful Cherokees, lingering in the Stone Age by choice at the turn of the eighteenth century, were forced by circumstances to transfer their concentration on war to problems posed by the white man. To cope with these unwelcome problems, they had to turn from the conquests of war to the conquest of civilization.
