Book The Knowledge of Things Hoped For

Download or read book The Knowledge of Things Hoped For written by Robert W. Jenson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sort of meaning for today’s world emerges in theological discourse? "We sit in the pew," the author writes, "and ask, 'But what does the preacher mean?’ We climb the pulpit with despair of the words we must utter—a despair present for a generation at least, but now become explicit." The suspicion that talk about God makes less and less sense is set both by the dominance of the sciences as models of certainty, and by our increasing acceptance of historical relativism. The order of Dr. Jenson's book follows the order of his search for verifiability; his conclusions acknowledge the reality of promise, the "centrality of hope for Christian faith and discourse" that is the common motif of many different contemporary theological programs. To overcome a deficiency of previous discussions, Dr. Jenson starts with an investigation of how classical theology, through key proponents, has understood itself. An account of Origen centers on "the language of images," one of Thomas on the notion of “analogy.” Seeking both continuity with and freedom from these traditional interpretations, the author then enters the contemporary discussion. Over the challenge of verifiability he engages the English and American “analysts,” over the challenge of historicism he engages the European ''hermeneuticists,” in quest of a more viable and comprehensive answer than either has been able to offer.

Book The Substance of Things Hoped For

Download or read book The Substance of Things Hoped For written by Tom Noyes and published by Slant Books. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a brief time in mid-nineteenth century Oneida, New York, two of the most eccentric and fascinating figures in American history crossed paths when troubled soul and soon-to-be presidential assassin Charles Guiteau threw in his lot with John Humphrey Noyes's utopian community of "free love" believers. In The Substance of Things Hoped For, Tom Noyes--a distant relative of John Humphrey Noyes--renders this historical intersection by deftly imagining the dynamics and consequences of an ominous and unusual relationship. As Guiteau stumbles further into madness and eventually achieves infamy for his murder of President Garfield, John Humphrey Noyes is left to face the consequences of his own missteps and misunderstandings as he's forced to make a hasty exit from Oneida. Joining Noyes and Guiteau in their parallel narratives is a chorus of other characters--family members, lovers, rivals, notable historical figures--whose haunting voices complement, undermine, complicate, and enhance Noyes's and Guiteau's versions of events, while also homing in on the novel's most pressing questions, including those related to revelation, delusion, loyalty, and love.

Book The Evidence of Things Not Seen

Download or read book The Evidence of Things Not Seen written by James Baldwin and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over twenty-two months in 1979 and 1981 nearly two dozen children were unspeakably murdered in Atlanta despite national attention and outcry; they were all Black. James Baldwin investigated these murders, the Black administration in Atlanta, and Wayne Williams, the Black man tried for the crimes. Because there was only evidence to convict Williams for the murders of two men, the children's cases were closed, offering no justice to the families or the country. Baldwin's incisive analysis implicates the failures of integration as the guilt party, arguing, "There could be no more devastating proof of this assault than the slaughter of the children." As Stacey Abrams writes in her foreword, "The humanity of black children, of black men and women, of black lives, has ever been a conundrum for America. Forty years on, Baldwin's writing reminds us that we have never resolved the core query: Do black lives matter? Unequivocally, the moral answer is yes, but James Baldwin refuses such rhetorical comfort." In this, his last book, by excavating American race relations Baldwin exposes the hard-to-face ingrained issues and demands that we all reckon with them.

Book The Assurance of Things Hoped for

Download or read book The Assurance of Things Hoped for written by Avery Dulles and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith, since the earliest Christian theologians, has been regarded as the fundamental Christian virtue--the prerequisite for hope, charity, and good works. In this book, Avery Dulles examines the biblical foundations and history of theological reflection on faith, from the Greek and Latin fathers to such modern giants as Tillich, Rahner, and Lonergan. Further, Dulles presents his own systematic synthesis, reflecting on such topics as the nature and object of faith; the certitude of faith; the birth, growth, and loss of faith; and faith and salvation. The result is a refreshingly relevant theology of faith for our day.
