Book excerpt: Unintended pregnancy poses a major challenge to the reproductive health of young adults in developing countries. In Nigeria unintended and unprotected intercourse is the primary cause of unwanted pregnancy and induced abortions and subsequently leading to increased maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Post-secondary school students form an important high risk group for unplanned pregnancy in Nigeria and other developing countries. Similarly, a Nigeria community-based study of abortion prevalence found that one-third of women who obtained an abortion are adolescents. Emergency contraception, has the potential to significantly reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy and the consequent need for abortion.Emergency contraception (EC) is the contraception used by a woman after unprotected intercourse during her unsafe period. EC is needed when intercourse is unexpected and without prior contraceptive coverage.EC may be an effective way to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions. Several studies have shown low awareness and usage of EC amongst adolescents and women and this book wants to elucidate the reason behind poor awareness and practice of EC.

It plays a vital role in preventing unwanted pregnancy and thus helps to reduce unsafe abortions or unwanted children, which is a major health problem among mothers. The means are used within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. Governmental and non-governmental organizations working to provide reproductive health services to these women may benefit from the results of this study by providing awareness programs.

Book Emergency Contraception

Download or read book Emergency Contraception written by Karina Linares and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Emergency contraceptive pills, or ECP, are proven to be a safe and effective method of preventing unintended pregnancy. However, use of the method is low. With 3 million unintended pregnancies in the U.S. each year, factors affecting ECP use, including awareness and knowledge, should be explored to increase usage. Objectives: 1) To assess the levels of awareness, knowledge, and use of ECP among the study population; and 2) to determine the significant demographic characteristics that play a role in ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Methods: An anonymous 20-question survey was completed by (n=157) adult female visitors of two Philadelphia Planned Parenthood health centers. The survey was designed to collect basic demographic information and to measure knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards ECP. Chi-square analyses, Fisher's exact tests, and logistic regression were used to examine factors that may predict ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Results: The majority of women (83.44%) expressed awareness of ECP. Women with some college education or greater were more likely to be aware of ECP than those with lower education levels. Women younger than 35 were more likely to have used ECP than those older than 35, as well as women who have had previous pregnancies. Contraceptive use was also associated with previous ECP use. For ECP knowledge, prior ECP use was a significant predictor. Conclusion: Although awareness of ECP is high, use and knowledge still vary in several population groups. More effort is needed to raise overall knowledge of ECP to those groups at risk of unintended pregnancy.

Book excerpt: Although emergency contraception has been available for the last three decades in many developing countries such as Ethiopia; the knowledge, attitude and practice on emergency contraception of the different groups remains relatively unknown and underused. As a result, many pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted, in the presence of highly effective methods of contraception. The consequences of unplanned pregnancies are multiple including discontinuation of school, unsafe illegal abortions and the risk of very serious morbidity and mortality. This study was therefore conducted to assess information gaps of knowledge, attitude and practice on emergency contraception and the associated factors among female students in northwest Ethiopia and then to suggest a potential strategy that reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions.

Book Knowledge Attitude and Practice Regarding Hormonal Emergency Contraception Among Married Female Staff in Universiti Putra Malaysia

Download or read book Knowledge Attitude and Practice Regarding Hormonal Emergency Contraception Among Married Female Staff in Universiti Putra Malaysia written by Fatemeh Najafi Sharj Abad and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergency Contraception (EC) is a back-up method of conceptive emergencies, which women can use within the first few days after unprotected intercourse to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. In Malaysia, the use of modern contraceptive method is low whereby only 30% married women (15-49) used it. Studied have shown unwanted pregnancies among young women are increasing. The aim of this study was to determine the factors and its relationship on knowledge, attitude and practice of hormonal EC among married female staff in University Putra Malaysia (UPM). A cross-sectional study was conducted among female staffs using stratified random sampling from 15 faculties in UPM. Data on sociodemographic, reproductive health factors, knowledge, attitude and practice of EC were gathered using self-administered questionnaire. The response rate was 87.24%. Respondents comprised of 81(27.6%) academic and 213(78.4%) non academic staff. The mean age of respondent was 35.8 ± 9 years old. Mistimed pregnancy and unwanted pregnancy were reported by 35% and 13.6% of respondents respectively. 45.1% of women practiced contraception. The mean knowledge score on EC was 5.89 ± 4.17 and the mean attitude score was 28.24 ± 6.53. There was significant difference in the mean knowledge score of academic and non academic staff [t (292) =3.168; p=0.002]. A low and positive relationship was found between knowledge and attitude (r=0.269; p= 0.0001) Respondents who used EC had more positive attitude compared to non users [t (292) = -7.188; p=0.0001]. Overall, only11.2% of women had ever used EC. Logistic regression for predictor variables showed positive attitude (p= 0.027) and counseling with doctors (p=0.037) were significant. This study showed knowledge of hormonal EC was low married female staff particularly among non academic staff in UPM. The used of contraception methods was also low and only small proportion of women had used EC pill. Large proportion of non contraceptive users can lead to high risk unintended pregnancy. Hence there is a need to provide accurate information and counseling on effective use of EC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets out guidelines that can help reduce the high levels of maternal morbidity and mortality associated with abortion whether spontaneous or induced. Recommendations and advice are backed by extensive practical experience and rooted in the principle that emergency care for the complications of abortion should be available 24 hours a day in every health care system. In view of the need to prevent life-threatening complications the book also establishes standards of safe abortion practice for use in those countries where abortion is permitted by law. Prevention of abortion through education and family planning is likewise discussed. Addressed to health managers administrators and care providers the book follows a step-by-step approach to the provision of emergency and preventive care. The first three chapters describe the magnitude of mortality and morbidity caused by unsafe abortions define the essential components of abortion care at each level in the health system and discuss the ways in which legal and societal factors affect abortion behaviour and care. Against this background the remaining eleven chapters provide technical and managerial guidelines for each component of service at each level of the health system needed to ensure that all women have access to care 24 hours a day. A chapter on planning is followed by three chapters outlining the clinical elements of emergency abortion care. Of particular value is a chapter on patient information and counselling which emphasizes the importance of providing information in a supportive manner. Other chapters offer detailed guidance on the facilities equipment and drugs needed for abortion care on the training and supervision of staff and on ways to overcome several obstacles that make it difficult for women in remote rural areas to receive timely care.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to assess and evaluate sampled university students’ knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive. To collect data, a 29 item survey was developed and administered to students in sampled classrooms at Minnesota State University, Mankato campus regarding their knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive; as well as demographic information. The findings of the study indicated there were some participants who have much knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive. However, findings also showed that there were a number of participants who lacked knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive pill. Despite lacking knowledge, many students had strong attitudes about when Plan B emergency contraception should be used. Recommendations for further study includ conducting the study with students at other universities, and investigating if the use of Plan B has increased since it has become available over the counter for anyone at any age. Further, health education specialists can provide education on regular use of contraception and emergency contraception to students in high school so they have some knowledge before entering college.
