Book excerpt: The King’s Cameo, a novel about King Louis 15th and The Marguise de Pompadour. All the King’s life had felt a vast sense of loneliness in his heart, from time to time, something in his nature that no woman could satisfy, and time went by slowly be began to realize that it was something in himself that kept him bored, constantly seeking new relationships and events of an exticiting nature; something that geoded him on to search for the new, untried and the unreachable: until he reached it, until bored, cast it aside and went searching again. The pattern repeated itself, over and over again. Only the Marguise du Pompadour with her listing to him, and her gentle understanding of his nature brought him any peace. She was his and more and more he began to realize how very she ment to him------a King! With the new theater movement, the King converted the great beautiful Stairway of Lousi XIV, one the showpieces of Versailles into a new theater for Madmae de Pompadour. It took the craftsmen and carpenters quite a while to build. It was years before the stage could be used. The new establishment was functional and could be taken down so that the area could be used for affairs of state. The King had eyes only for (Reinette) Madame de Pompadour and she had eyes only for him. The King gave Madame de Pompadour the Cameo made with his likeness with 600 white diamonds on it. The Marquise help the King’s Cameo to her soft cheek as she remember their days together as lovers-how passionate he had been, how thoughtful and generous, and she had been just as understanding of his Royal Majesty! “Louis, -----Louis,” she murmured.

Download or read book The Book of Kings and Exilic Identity written by Nathan Lovell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathan Lovell proposes that 1 and 2 Kings might be read as a work of written history, produced with the explicit purpose of shaping the communal identity of its first readers in the Babylonian exile. By drawing on sociological approaches to the role historiography plays in the construction of political identity, Lovell argues the book of Kings is intended to reconstruct a sense of Israelite identity in the context of these losses, and that the book of Kings moves beyond providing a reason for the exile in Israel's history, and beyond even connecting its exilic audience to that history. The book recalls the past in order to demonstrate what it means to be Israel in the (exilic) present, and to encourage hope for the Israelite nation in the future. After developing a reading strategy for 1–2 Kings that treats the book as a coherent narrative, Lovell examines the construction of Israelite identity within Kings under the headings of covenant, nationhood, land, and rule. In each case he suggests that the narrative of the book creates room for a genuine but temporary expression of Israelite identity in exile: genuine to show that it remains possible for Israel to be Yahweh's people during the exile, but temporary to encourage hope for a future restoration.

Nine percent survived to mutate into tragically deformed creatures. And one percent gained superpowers. The Wild Cards shared-universe series, created and edited since 1987 by New York Times #1 bestseller George R. R. Martin ("The American Tolkien"—Time magazine) along with Melinda Snodgrass, is the tale of the history of the world since then—and of the heroes among the one percent. This sparkling story is just about as good as it could get, as if you were reading Ernest Hemmingway's Noble Prize Winner, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. The best of B.D. Williams is certainly based inside of this brilliant book. The image which Chradel and Rica Barter have left behind? Help Chelsea Oxford and Paul Ronny build great confidence in their journeys, a sharp life, in a time of hard labour. Today Chelsea Oxford and Paul Ronny, have reached the status of myths. The book has the right mixture of history and has all the makings of a classical book. The story of two well accomplished fishermen that became known as KINGS OF THE SEA. This unauthorised biography gives the low-down on the men behind the laughter. When Little Britain appeared on our screens, a series of characters was born that would make a nation laugh like no other British comedy in recent years. With its hilarious mocking of British clichés and stereotypes, it was not long before its catchphrases were being quoted in every home, playground and office across the land. And it was all down to the comedy genius of the inspired duo that is Matt Lucas and David Walliams. All of a sudden, two relatively little-known comedians became the nation's entertainment heroes, shooting straight to the A-list of Britain's most wanted TV celebrities. Although such success was new to them, Matt and David's creativity led them to write two more astonishingly successful series, earning them countless industry accolades, numerous British comedy awards and two Baftas. But behind the sketches lie two fascinating individuals whose work in comedy goes way back - Matt and David met in 1990, drawn together by a mutual love for Reeves and Mortimer - and whose life stories provide a fascinating and hilarious insight into what has inspired them to produce some of the finest laughs in the history of British comedy. In this insightful and brilliantly researched biography, Neil Simpson traces their development from boys to men, revealing much about their off-screen lives along the way, and setting the record straight on the various rumours (many of them true!) that have grown around the pair.Kings of Comedy is a fascinating portrait of two men without whose comic creations Britain would be a lot less funny place to live.
