Book excerpt: We pick up events and multiple story threads as they continue into Christmas and follow Sam Houston St. Clair as the days run out before the new Congress convenes to name the new President. But before he returns to Washington, Sam has to bury Sofia. Bedelia Vaughan never leaves his side, knowing she will likely be Sam's First Lady if he's the new President. Observing all this is Eve Harrington, who wrangles an invitation from Norwalk to return to Washington with Sam aboard Air Force One. Derek Gilbertson has to balance Vlad Kucherov's increasing bossiness as they prepare to transfer the $27 million to the Bahamas. Watching from the sidelines is Cuban government operative Fernando Pozo, who doesn't trust the Russian. Meanwhile, Lord Ellsworth sets in motion the plan he concocted with Russian Ambassador Kornilevski to hire an assassin to remove Hawkins from the equation, thus ensuring the election for Sam. All 7 books in the Keystone series come to a head at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Book excerpt: Florida Governor Sam Houston St. Clair is the Republican candidate for President when on Election Night it’s discovered that there’s been a tie in the Electoral College, resulting in a deadlock. The Constitution requires that in such a case the election is thrown into the House of Representatives, where each state has a single vote. (The same thing happened to Thomas Jefferson.) Sam’s son is Jack Houston St. Clair, who, although a Democrat, has put his personal feelings aside and has been helping his dad during the campaign. Incumbent Republican President Jeffrey Norwalk is determined that St. Clair will succeed him because he expects St. Clair to continue his policies, especially his foreign policy. The Democratic candidate Senator Frederick Thurston, violently opposes Norwalk’s foreign policy. On the other side of the world, the Russians and the Chinese have armies massed at their borders. The Chinese have threatened to divert the water from the massive Ili River which flows into Russia providing the water resources crucial to Russian agriculture. The Russians have already bombed a dam built by the Chinese, but now the Chinese are ready to open a new canal dug that will divert the water, thus crippling Russian agriculture. Policymakers around the world are sitting on the edge of their seats. Norwalk and St. Clair support the Russians, while the Democrats and Thurston support the Chinese. The Russian and Chinese ambassadors in Washington are already working behind the scenes to get their man elected. Norwalk’s aide of Congressional Liaison, Phil Slanetti, has been keeping top-secret files on all members of Congress, a secret weapon Norwalk has never used. No one knows about the Keystone File expect Norwalk and Slanetti. As it becomes clear what’s at stake, everybody prepares to travel to Washington to begin the deadly bargaining that will eventually produce a new President.

Book The Keystone Advantage

Download or read book The Keystone Advantage written by Marco Iansiti and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, many companies operate within a complex network of firms that all depend on each other for success. In this book, authors Marco Iansiti and Roy Levien use the powerful example of biological ecosystems to show how companies can leverage these emerging business networks for long-term success. The book's title, "The Keystone Advantage", is taken directly from biology - it refers to "keystone species", which proactively maintain the healthy functioning of their entire ecosystem for a simple reason: their own survival depends on it. In the same way, say the authors, companies can protect and ensure their own success by deliberately fostering the combined health of the network they operate in.

Book The Industrial Transformation of Subarctic Canada

Download or read book The Industrial Transformation of Subarctic Canada written by Liza Piper and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1821 and 1960, industrial economies took root in the North, transgressing political geographies and superseding the historically dominant fur trade. Imported southern scientists and sojourning labourers worked the Northwest, and its industrial history bears these newcomers' imprint. This book reveals the history of human impact upon the North. It provides a baseline, grounded in historical and scientific evidence, for measuring subarctic environmental change. Liza Piper examines the sustainability of industrial economies, the value of resource exploitation in volatile ecosystems, and the human consequences of northern environmental change. She also addresses northern communities' historical resistance to external resource development and their fight for survival in the face of intensifying environmental and economic pressures.
