Book From the Flames

Download or read book From the Flames written by William Hauben and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is a book of miracles, of the human goodness of Righteous Persons who risked their own lives to save others, and of a seventeen-year-old young man’s survival in the face of insurmountable obstacles and certain death in four slave labor camps. It is a poignant look at human endurance at its best and worst. William Hauben speaks of his lost family and, in one simple story, of the heroic deeds of his younger brother who ran away to live outside the Cracow Ghetto with Gentile friends. Under cover of darkness, his brother smuggled in precious food and communication from the outside world, as he traveled on bicycle, with no identification papers, dressed as a scout carrying the books of a schoolboy to deceive the Germans. Righteous Gentiles who were converted Volksdeutsche provided the boy with food and a little money in exchange for merchandise left behind from the family business before they entered the ghetto. The author tells other such stories that pull at the heartstrings. The book contains photos and documents, as well as the author’s extensive catalogued collection of items of Jewish culture hidden, and later rescued, from the Germans during World War II. He has been collecting these treasures for more than fifty years.

Book Jews Cinema and Public Life in Interwar Britain

Download or read book Jews Cinema and Public Life in Interwar Britain written by Gil Toffell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a Jewish orientation to film culture in interwar Britain. It explores how pleasure, politics and communal solidarity intermingled in the cinemas of Jewish neighbourhoods, and how film was seen as a vessel through which Jewish communal concerns might be carried to a wider public. Addressing an array of related topics, this volume examines the lived expressive cultures of cinemas in Jewish areas and the ethnically specific films consumed within these sites; the reception of film stars as representations of a Jewish social body; and how an antisemitic canard that understood the cinema as a Jewish monopoly complicated its use as a base for anti-fascist activity. In shedding light on an unexplored aspect of British film reception and exhibition, Toffell provides a unique insight into the making of the modern city by migrant communities. The title will be of use to anyone interested in Britain’s interwar leisure landscape, the Jewish presence in modernity, and a cinema studies sensitised to the everyday experience of audiences.
