Book The Keilson Ross Procedure for Estimating Climatic Probabilities of Duration of Weather Conditions

Download or read book The Keilson Ross Procedure for Estimating Climatic Probabilities of Duration of Weather Conditions written by Irving I. Gringorten and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a recent mathematical development the probability of the maximum of a continuous weather element, over a specified time interval, was computed analytically. As long as the weather condition is describable by a Markov (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck) process, the time interval could be a duration of a few seconds to a few weeks. The analytical solutions provide corrections to previous probability estimates that had been made by Monte Carlo simulation. There still remains, however, the requirement for rapid solutions. The adaptation of this problem to modern computers makes use of cubic B-splines, and provides answers with a high degree of accuracy.

Book Time Lapse Simulation of Interrelated Weather Conditions

Download or read book Time Lapse Simulation of Interrelated Weather Conditions written by Irving I. Gringorten and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper has been prompted by the need, in war games, for a stochastic model of the sequence of weather conditions as they might impinge on air/ground combat operations. Such a time sequence of weather, including ceiling, visibility, and cloud cover, for one or more stations, has been perceived as inadequately modeled, so far. The present work is based on previously developed sequences in the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Joint sequences call for a modification, but still basically comprise a Markov process. Formulas or algorithms have been developed for the joint occurrence of two interrelated events changing simultaneously in a Markov time sequence. The model process is particularly applicable to a changing combination of ceiling and visibility at one station, or to the changing combination of cloud cover at two adjacent stations. A brief examination of the time sequence of three simultaneous events reveals a rapidly increasing complication of solution, making an alternative study of a real coverage of weather conditions more acceptable when more than two variables are involved.

Book The 3D BSW Model Applied to Climatology of Small Areas and Lines

Download or read book The 3D BSW Model Applied to Climatology of Small Areas and Lines written by Irving I. Gringorten and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a continuing effort to improve stochastic modeling to simulate weather conditions and events, specifically cloud cover spread over space and time. The Sawtooth Wave simulation model has been applied with encouraging results. In a previous report the model was limited to two dimensions, and to the two-dimensional Boehm Sawtooth Wave (2D-BSW) model. A second report introduced the 3D-BSW model, to the extent that it can be used to simulate synoptic events, such as cloud cover. There has remained the task of developing and describing the three-dimensional model to yield the probabilities of events in one-, two-, and three-dimensional space, and also to link spatial events to time changes and their probabilities. As in the previous reports, the determination of such probabilities was accomplished by applying Monte Carlo methods of approximation to the frequency of events. This report includes the concomitant fields of correlation, both spatial and temporal. The probability of fractional cover, in an area or on a line, and the probability of line intervals that are free of specified exceedances, are among the estimates. Algorithms have been compiled to fit the results of the Monte Carlo exercises.
