Book Year Before Last

Download or read book Year Before Last written by Kay Boyle and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kay Boyle's second novel, Year Before Last, was published in 1932 by Harrison Smith in New York and by Faber and Faber in London, in each case a true edition from different settings of type. Matthew J. Bruccoli, the textual editor of the Crosscurrents/Modern Fiction series, has used the Harrison Smith edition in preparing this volume which is unique in the annals of textual editing of a modern novel because the emendations in the copy-text have been approved by the author. Harry T. Moore has provided a Preface which considers this work in relation to Miss Boyle's development as a novelist. Mr. Bruccoli's Note on the Text provides information about both the 1932 editions and lists the emendations. Against the background of the French Riviera we watch the unfolding of the story of a young woman who has left her husband for another man, a poet of compelling personality. Their love affair is complicated by the insane jealousy of an older woman which leads them to acts of desperation. This novel of love and hate moves forward in swift incident and action to a dramatic end.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carontawan, 1923: Alias "the Little Town on the Hill" The real test of knowledge is its application in the aid of human progress. Utility is the word. Let one of us be called upon to give of his knowledge._ No sooner does he try than he begins to feel a need for more. Who of us has passed through a teaching semester without realizing this? As long as we absorb that which is good and give it to the world, nature imbues us with greater absorptive ability and main tains youth with n us. One who is modern in his thought is never thought of as being old. If he can no longer absorb new ideas, he is old though his much vaunted chronological age is but sweet sixteen. During our time at Mansfield State -normal, it has been our privilege to receive freely from the world's fund of knowledge. What measure we have obtained, we now realize, is dependent upon how diligently we applied ourselves to learning. We go forward. Our scope is broadened. In a small way we begin to exert power. With increased power comes increased responsibility. We shall be considered to rank th men and women and be expected to bear the responsibilities incumbent upon manhood and womanhood. Book excerpt: An actor, recently divorced, at loose ends in New York; a woman, no less lonely, perhaps even more desperate than the man: they meet by chance in an all-night diner and are drawn to each other on the spot. Roaming the city streets, hitting its late-night dives, dropping another coin into yet another jukebox, these two lost souls struggle to understand what it is that has brought them, almost in spite of themselves, together. They are driven—from moment to moment, from bedroom to bedroom—to improvise the most unexpected of love stories, a tale of suspense where risk alone offers salvation. Georges Simenon was the most popular and prolific of the twentieth century’s great novelists. Three Bedrooms in Manhattan—closely based on the story of his own meeting with his second wife—is his most passionate and revealing work.

Together these form the Dean's Council, which meets regularly to con sider all the matters concerning the women residing in the halls. In nearby towns. To accomplish this purpose, an Off Campus Women's Club has been formed, which has already done much. In November, the Dean of Women gave a tea to all the landladies of Kent who have college women living with them, that they might become better acquainted and might better understand their mutual relationships and responsibilities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silhouette, 1923, Vol. 20 But such a tide as moving seems asleep, T 00 full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep T urns again home. Dr. Gaines has gone Home. One day he stepped out of his oflice - not just across the hall to be away for a moment on some errand of service, but into the Radiant Life to be gone for always in the perfect service of the King. Just the fact that: he has gone away is so strange, so new, so difficult to comprehend that we, who in our love for him would have him near, cannot think yet of Agnes Scott without him; 'we cannot think of the campus, the chapel, his othee - his college without his own familiar, beloved figure. But through all the strangeness and sor row of these past days, there has been shining into our hearts the light of one quiet thought; he has but gone Home. Quietly from his family, from his friends, from his college and his girls, Dr. Gaines has passed on. Because we know that he has but laid down his life and his work to take it up again, we cannot mourn without comfort when that which drew from out the boundless deep, turns again home. Because the source of his life and power was God always, there can be no sting in death, or victory in the grave. Though in sorrowing for our friend, we have passed through the valley of the shadow, yet even in sorrow we have irresistibly felt that the death of him whose strength was God was triumphant - the triumphant entering into Life. We thrilled to that conviction as, in those last, simple, loving sentences, we sang his favorite hymns; as we listened to the reading of those passages of the Bible which he himself had many times read for the comfort of the distressed; as we stood by his open grave and witnessed the last tribute of his Senior class. And even as we go about the doing of the little and the big things that make up our lives, we shall thrill again to that same conviction of the greatness of triumphant living and dying. We grieve that he has gone from us in person. We miss him so. But our sadness is touched with the light of a great thankfulness - thankfulness for the life which -he lived in simplicity, in strength and in sincerity; for the college which he dreamed of and toiled for, and loved into being; for his spirit that is inseparable from the spirit of Agnes Scott. May it be given to us, the students of the college that is the dream and the crown of his life, that with something of his goodness, his faith, his vision of high things, we may carry ou.
