Download or read book Personal Score written by Ellen Van Neerven and published by Two Dollar Radio. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vital and deeply personal testament to self, family, community, culture, and sport. Award-winning writer Ellen van Neerven plays soccer from a young age, learning early on that while sport can lead to exhilarating experiences and community-building, it can also be a painful and exclusive world. The more they play, the more they realize about sport’s troubled relationship with race, gender, and sexuality – and question what it means to play sport on stolen, sovereign land, especially in the midst of multiple environmental crises. Formidable, poetic, and impassioned, Personal Score is improbably many things at once, simultaneously a rumination on sport, relationship to land, Indigenous rights, trans inclusion, and race. Van Neerven weaves broad cultural touchstones, such as Zinedine Zidane’s red card in the 2006 World Cup finals, with quiet moments playing soccer with their family, biking to and from practice, detailing a competitive and amorous relationship with a teammate, and simply enthralled by observing the landscape. Fierce, original, and also abundantly tender, Personal Score is a ground-breaking book that demonstrates van Neerven’s unrivalled talent and courage.

Download or read book Macropods written by Graeme Coulson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-02-03 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the proceedings of a major 2006 symposium on macropods that brought together the many recent advances in the biology of this diverse group of marsupials, including research on some of the much neglected macropods such as the antilopine wallaroo, the swamp wallaby and tree-kangaroos. More than 80 authors have contributed 32 chapters, which are grouped into four themes: genetics, reproduction and development; morphology and physiology; ecology; and management. The book examines such topics as embryonic development, immune function, molar progression and mesial drift, locomotory energetics, non-shivering thermogenesis, mycophagy, habitat preferences, population dynamics, juvenile mortality in drought, harvesting, overabundant species, road-kills, fertility control, threatened species, cross-fostering, translocation and reintroduction. It also highlights the application of new techniques, from genomics to GIS. Macropods is an important reference for academics and students, researchers in molecular and ecological sciences, wildlife and park managers, and naturalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sporting nation is only limited by its imagination. Every time this story is told it changes; something is always added, embellished or dropped from the run-on side. For more than thirty years, H.G. Nelson has been finding the poetry in the punt and humour during half-time. Now, he turns his keen eye for facts and folly to the illustrious history of our great sporting nation. In his trademark fast and furious style, H.G. dives deep into the moments that have truly made us who we are. He reminds us of our leaders' great sporting triumphs, from Harold Holt's swimming to John Howard's bowling; rewrites the record on legends such as 'Aussie Joe' Bugner and Jack Brabham; and explains why Australia's reality TV is the best in the world. The Fairytale is H.G. Nelson's magnum opus - an all-encompassing, no-holds-barred history of Australia at play, told through the stories of our sporting highs, lows and middles.

Download or read book Bettongs Potoroos and the Musky Rat kangaroo written by Andrew Claridge and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rat-kangaroos have not coped well with the impact of European settlement in Australia. Of the 11 species present in 1788, two are extinct, two are either mostly or totally restricted to offshore islands and the range of all other species has been much reduced. Habitat alienation, altered fire regimes, grazing, predation by introduced carnivores, competition from rabbits and timber harvesting have variously taken their toll on these little-seen animals. The rat-kangaroo was one of the first Australian marsupials to be seen alive in Europe. Collected close to the settlement at Sydney Cove, a pair of them were exhibited in London in 1789. These animals were called by the local Aboriginal people 'Pot-o-roo', and by the European settlers, 'Kangooroo rat'. They were the Long-nosed Potoroo, Potorous tridactylus, the first of what we now call 'Rat-kangaroos' to be discovered. Bettongs, Potoroos and the Musky Rat-kangaroo provides an extraordinary glimpse into the secretive lives of these unusual marsupials. It also reveals little-known facts about the critical functional role these creatures play in maintaining the forest and woodland habitats in which they live. Winner of the 2008 Whitley Award for Natural History.

Download or read book Maiden Innings written by Kapil Pathare and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Cricket has come a long way, with many people still unaware of its progress. Primarily male-dominated in India, the game has often been associated with names like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and off-late, the swashbuckling Virat Kohli. Amidst all this, the mantle of taking Indian women’s cricket forward has been quietly shouldered by a very committed team of young women who made it big on the international cricket scene by making it to the finals of the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017. The gusto with which the India eves brought India to the anvil victory, once again only reconfirms the growing, maturing capabilities of Indian women in an erstwhile male-dominated sport. Each woman in the team has a specific character that appears louder in their performance than in their personality while giving their best for the country. Most of them come from humble, poor backgrounds but with far much richer dreams to make their country proud. Their effort should not be looked upon merely as a performance but should be seen in the light of an excruciating struggle from a tender age to the highest level of the game. The book emphasizes displaying these strong characters as great role models for women in other sports, industries and even the least privileged section of society to follow and improve their lives.
