Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John E. Mylroie and Ira D. Sasowsky' Caves occupy incongruous positions in both our culture and our science. The oldest records of modem human culture are the vivid cave paintings from southern France and northern Spain, which are in some cases more than 30,000 years old (Chauvet, et ai, 1996). Yet, to call someone a "caveman" is to declare them primitive and ignorant. Caves, being cryptic and mysterious, occupied important roles in many cultures. For example, Greece, a country with abundant karst, had the oracle at Delphi and Hades the god of death working from caves. People are both drawn to and mortified by caves. Written records ofcave exploration exist from as early as 852 BC (Shaw, 1992). In the decade of the 1920's, which was rich in news events, the second biggest story (as measured by column inches of newsprint) was the entrapment of Floyd Collins in Sand Cave, Kentucky, USA. This was surpassed only by Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic (Murray and Brucker, 1979).

Book Aspects of the Tectonic Evolution of China

Download or read book Aspects of the Tectonic Evolution of China written by J. Malpas and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides accounts of up-to-date research by Chinese and international geological teams on key aspects of the tectonic evolution of China and its surrounding areas. The papers describe the formation of the geological terranes that make up this part of east Asia, place constraints on plate tectonic models for their assembly and provide accounts of unique geological feature of the subcontinent.

Book At the Top of the Grand Staircase

Download or read book At the Top of the Grand Staircase written by Alan L. Titus and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the location of one of the best-known terrestrial records for the late Cretaceous. Prior fieldwork confirmed the richness of the area, but a major effort begun in the new century has documented over 2,000 new vertebrate fossil sites, provided new radiometric dates, and identified five new genera of ceratopsids, two new species of hadrosaur, a probable new genus of hypsilophodontid, new pachycephalosaurs and ankylosaurs, several kinds of theropods (including a new genus of oviraptor and a new tyrannosaur), plus the most complete specimen of a Late Cretaceous therizinosaur ever collected from North America, and much more. The research documented in this book is rewriting our understanding of Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography and dinosaur phyletics. At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah is a major stepping stone toward a total synthesis of the ecology and evolution of the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of western North America.

Book Syngenesis and Epigenesis in the Formation of Mineral Deposits

Download or read book Syngenesis and Epigenesis in the Formation of Mineral Deposits written by A. Wauschkuhn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume are dedicated to Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. G. Christian Amstutz by his colleagues, friends, and students on the occasion of his 60th anniversary. The authors of this book - the theme was restricted to syngenesis and epigenesis in the formation of mineral deposits - wish to honour with their articles a scientist who has contributed to, and substantially promoted the understanding of the genesis of mineral deposits in the last decades. The majority of the articles deal with strata-bound depos its, thus reflecting one of his main scientific interests. In the tradition of his professors, Paul Niggli and Paul Ramdohr, G.C. Amstutz has maintained an open and active interest in many fields of earth science. His numerous papers have triggered a remarkable number of new ideas and investigations in a variety of fields, and the "happy marriage" of economic geology with sedimentology is cer tainly one of his main successes, starting with the first Symposium on Sedimentology and Ore Genesis at the Sixth International Sedimentological Congress at Delft in 1963.

Book Guimarota

    Book Details:

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Guimarota written by Thomas Martin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guimarota coal mine in central Portugal is the most important fossil locality in the world for Late Jurassic mammals and other small vertebrates. From 1973 to 1982 the mine was worked exclusively for paleontological purposes all year round, which represents one of the most ambitious enterprises in the history of paleontology. Tens of thousands of skulls, jaws, bones, and teeth of terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates and countless invertebrate and plant remains were collected. A great international sensation was created by the discovery of the first complete skeleton of an ancestor of modern mammals.Twenty specialists from geo- and biosciences summarize in 21 chapters the latest findings of more than 30 years of interdisciplinary research on the Guimarota locality. The book deals with the history of discovery, excavations, geology, stratigraphy, paleobiology, and paleoecology of the fossil locality. It is illustrated with many large size colour prints and provides an exciting insight into a Late Jurassic ecosystem at the eastern shore of the Proto-North Atlantic, at a time when giant dinosaurs ruled the world and tiny mammals had just begun their careers. The book will be of interest not only to paleontologists and geologists, but also to students and scholars of the bio- and geosciences. It should also be welcomed by a more general public interested in palaeontology, geology, and evolution.
