Book The Junior High School Idea Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Junior High School Idea Classic Reprint written by Joseph K. Van Denburg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Junior High School Idea Speyer School therefore has been developed and is developing as an experimental school where, under Professor Briggs' direction, the principal and teachers have been wholly free to work out such administrative methods and such courses of study as seemed best fitted to secure the results desired. The six hundred pupils have been public school boys (and for a time girls also) selected from some twenty neighboring elementary schools because of their promise of school success. On the whole, the pupils have been above the average New York City boys of their age in general intelligence. The twenty teachers too are above the average, having been selected for initiative, knowledge of subject matter, a willingness to try eagerly and honestly such innovations as have been proposed, and above all, for that professional spirit that leads them to consider first most carefully the reasons why a thing should be done at all, and then being satisfied on that point to do that thing as well as in them lies. The general aim of Speyer School as stated by Professor Briggs and accepted by the faculty and pupils of the school has been: First: "To teach pupils to do better those desirable activities that they will do anyway and to teach these by means of material in itself worth while." Second, "To reveal higher types of activities and to make these both desired and, to an extent, possible." Many schools that fall short of all these char acteristics by one point are called junior high schools. But in practically all cities where the movement for establishing these schools has gotten well under way, the ideal toward which the authorities are working embraces all of these points. Book The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos Classic Reprint written by Rolla Milton Tryon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Junior and Senior High Schoos This book has been written in the interest of better history teaching. It deals in most part with what might be denominated everyday classroom problems in the teaching of history in the upper-elementary and high-school grades, both junior and senior. The technic of teaching has received the chief emphasis in the majority of the chapters, and the general psychological, pedagogical, and historical phases of the subject, as well as the unsettled problem of what to teach, have been omitted. The idea back of the discussion throughout is that there is a technic of teaching history in the junior and senior high schools that can be mastered by a teacher and actually applied in directing the daily classroom activities, regardless of the content of the course. The writer fully realizes the dangers accompanying a discussion which attempts to be so practical and concrete as the one contained in the following pages purports to be. When one presents a history-recitation score card, a specific procedure for supervised study in history, a detailed outline of how to use a textbook, a definite scheme to attain progress within the subject, directions for writing a term paper, concrete examples of the problem-solving method in history, and a score or more of similar suggestions, one is likely to be met with the objection that the specific procedure proposed is by no means the best or the only one. The author's rejoinder to such an objection is that in no case has he done more than present a way of doing a specific thing. This definiteness in all probability will be more helpful to some teachers than to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Suggestions for Courses in History in Junior Colleges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Suggestions for Courses in History in Junior Colleges Classic Reprint written by California University Dept of History and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for Courses in History in Junior Colleges The Department of History in the University of California is greatly interested in the courses which are being ofiered in the fifth and sixth years in high schools in California, and makes the following suggestions in reply to the numerous inquiries which have been received from different parts of the State with regard to courses in History. The term Junior Colleges, which has been applied to the establishment of such courses in the fifth and sixth years, indicates that the work is expected to be of college rather than of high school standard. In no subject is there a wider difference of treatment between school and college than in History. In the high school, History must be taught, or at any rate has hitherto been generally taught, by the text-book method. In ambitious high schools with progressive teachers, the text-book method is largely supple mented, and in the fourth-year classes it is sometimes entirely abandoned. But in the great majority of high schools the text-book method still con tinnes to be used. In colleges and-universities the text-book method, even when supplemented from other sources, is now abandoned. The college student is freed from the idea that all the History he need know is shut between the covers of one text-book, and he is led to consult many books and to realize that training in History does not mean the acquisition of a certain amount of historical information, but that it is also a discipline in learning how much or how little is known about the past and in a study of the controversies as to the interpretation of the past. The college student breaks away from the idea of reciting upon a set lesson and is led to read, study, and compare. This change in the method of teaching, which at present generally takes place at the end of the four years in high school, when the student enters a college or a university, must begin-in the fifth year of the high school, or the first year of the junior college, if students from the junior colleges are to be admitted into the upper classes of the university. Otherwise such students will be hampered in their upper-class work by ignorance of the methods of instruction and research therein pursued, if they come at once from six years of recitation work in History into the upper-class work of a modern university. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advantages of Association of Ideas in Teaching: Addressed to the Teachers and School Officers of California Sometimes when at fault in the middle of one of the most incomprehensible of the Notes, I would try back, just as a boy does who balks as he reaches the edge of a ditch which he is attempting to clear by a run and jump. The second time, per haps, I would get on so much impetus that I would run down the obstacle, and come out at the end with flying colors, although, like an overtasked racer, a little blown.
