Book Introducing Markdown and Pandoc

Download or read book Introducing Markdown and Pandoc written by Thomas Mailund and published by Apress. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how to write manuscripts in Markdown and translate them with Pandoc into different output formats. You’ll use Markdown to annotate text formatting information with a strong focus on semantic information: you can annotate your text with information about where chapters and sections start, but not how chapter and heading captions should be formatted. As a result, you’ll decouple the structure of a text from how it is visualized and make it easier for you to produce different kinds of output. The same text can easily be formatted as HTML, PDF, or Word documents, with various visual styles, by tools that understand the markup annotations. Finally, you’ll learn to use Pandoc, a tool for translating between different markup languages, such as LaTeX, HTML, and Markdown. This book will not describe all the functionality that Pandoc provides, but will teach you how to translate Markdown documents, how to customize your documents using templates, and how to extend Pandoc’s functionality using filters. If that is something you are interested in, Introducing Markdown and Pandoc will get you started. With this set of skills you’ll be able to write more efficiently without worrying about needless formatting and other distractions. Book Myth in the Modern Novel

Download or read book Myth in the Modern Novel written by Liisa Steinby and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myth in the Modern Novel: Imagining the Absolute posits a twofold thesis. First, although Modernity is regarded as an era dominated by science and rational thought, it has in fact not relinquished the hold of myth, a more "primitive" form of thought which is difficult to reconcile with modern rationality. Second, some of the most important statements as to the reconcilability of myth and Modernity are found in the work of certain prominent novelists. This book offers a close examination of the work of eleven writers from the late eighteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first, representing German, French, American, Czech and Swedish literature. The analyses of individual novels reveal a variety of intriguing views of myth in Modernity, and offer an insight into the "modernizing" transformations myth has undergone when applied in the modern novel. The study shows the presence of the "subconscious", the mythic layer, in modern western culture and how this has been dealt with in novelistic literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amateur and experienced chefs alike will enjoy this collection of 150 recipes for your cast iron skillet. Cast iron skillets are booming in popularity: they’re versatile, they’re relatively inexpensive, and they don't have the toxic chemicals released by artificial nonstick pans. Though cast iron was the only pan in grandma’s kitchen, these 150 recipes are fresh and updated. They range from traditional skillet favorites, like Seared Chicken Hash, Spanish Potato and Sausage Tortilla, and pan-seared steaks and chops, to surprising dishes like cornbread with an Italian spin; quesadillas filled with brie, papaya, and pineapple; and a gingerbread cake topped with fresh pears. “The New Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook is . . . a damn fine work that’s at once a treatise, chronicle, and paean to perhaps the most versatile tool in a cook’s arsenal. . . . I promise you, with this book your cast iron skillet will never again leave the top of your stove. It’s that good.” —David Leite, publisher of the two-time James Beard Award-winning website Leite’s Culinaria (LCcooks.com) “Ellen Brown is like a well-seasoned cast iron skillet—both continue to improve with age. Ellen has compiled a scrumptious collection of original and heirloom recipes for America’s favorite cooking utensil. Great cookbooks and great skillets last forever. Fortunate are those who buy or inherit both.” —Irena Chalmers, author of Food Jobs 2: Ideas and Inspiration for Your Job Hunt “This is one of those rare, beautiful cookbooks you’ll actually use. In fact, I'd venture to guess that you’ll likely be compelled to open it daily—or at least every time you draw up a grocery list—and that your trusty skillet will soon settle in to a most convenient storage spot: the stovetop.” —Liana Krissoff, author of Canning for a New Generation

Book Cornbread Nation 2

  • ISBN : 0807868051

Download or read book Cornbread Nation 2 written by Lolis Eric Elie and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-01-27 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern barbecue and barbecue traditions are the primary focus of Cornbread Nation 2, our second collection of the best of Southern food writing. "Barbecue is the closest thing we have in the United States to Europe's wines or cheeses; drive a hundred miles and the barbecue changes," writes John Shelton Reed. Indeed, no other dish is served a dozen different ways just between Memphis and Birmingham. In tribute to what Vince Staten calls "the slowest of the slow foods," contributors discuss the politics, sociology, and virtual religion of barbecue in the South, where communities are defined by what wood they burn, what sauce they make, and what they serve with barbecue. Jim Auchmutey links barbecue to the success of certain Southern politicians; Marcie Cohen Ferris looks at kosher brisket; and Robb Walsh investigates why black cooks have been omitted from the accepted histories of Texas barbecue, despite their seminal role in its development. Beyond the barbecue pit, John Martin Taylor sings the virtues of boiled peanuts, Calvin Trillin savors Cajun boudin, and Eddie Dean revisits his days driving an ice cream truck deep in the Appalachian Mountains. From barbecue to scuppernongs to popsicles, the forty-three newspaper columns, magazine pieces, poems, and essays collected here confirm that a bounty of good writing exists when it comes to good eating, Southern style.
