Thorne Smith (1892-1934) was the author of "Topper / The Jovial Ghosts," "Topper Takes a Trip," "The Night Life of the Gods," "The Stray Lamb," "Turnabout," "The Glorious Pool," etc. "Topper" was published in 1926. Public Domain in countries where copyright is Life]70. Thorne Smith is a master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee. Topper, his best-known work, is the hilarious, ribald comedy on which the hit television show and movie (starring Cary Grant) were based. It all begins when Cosmo Topper, a law-abiding, mild-mannered bank manager, decides to buy a secondhand car, only to find it haunted by the ghosts of its previous owners--the reckless, feckless, frivolous couple who met their untimely demise when the car careened into an oak tree. The ghosts, George and Marion Kerby, make it their mission to rescue Topper from the drab "summer of suburban Sundays" that is his life--and they commence a series of madcap adventures that leave Topper, and anyone else who crosses their path, in a whirlwind of discomfiture and delight. As enchanting today as it was when first published in 1926, Topper has set the standard in American pop culture for such mischievous apparitions as those seen in 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, ' 'Heaven Can Wait, ' 'Beetlejuice, ' and 'Bewitched.'

  • Pages : 262 pages

Book excerpt: The Jazz Age comedy of manners about a straitlaced banker and two bon vivant ghosts that inspired the classic film starring Cary Grant. Bank manager Cosmo Topper has settled into a stable, respectable, and thoroughly boring life. In need of a little adventure, he decides to buy a secondhand car—a detail he neglects to tell his staid wife, Mary. But Topper’s little secret turns into an unexpectedly wild ride when he discovers the automobile is haunted by its previous owners . . . George and Marion Kerby were a ribald, reckless, fun-loving couple—right up until they crashed into a tree. But even in death, they’re determined to be the life of the party. Making it their mission to save Topper from his dreary life, they conjure up endless hijinks for him and anyone else who crosses their path. A popular phenomenon when it was first published in 1926, Topper has an enduring comic appeal. It’s also the groundbreaking work of fantasy fiction that “created the modern American ghost. A ghost with style and wit. A ghost that haunts us still” (The New York Times).

Book Ghosts in Popular Culture and Legend

Download or read book Ghosts in Popular Culture and Legend written by June Michele Pulliam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With entries that range from specific works to authors, folklore, and popular culture (including music, film, television, urban legend, and gaming), this book provides a single-volume resource on all things ghostly in the United States and in other countries. The concept of ghosts has been an ongoing and universal element in human culture as far back as recorded history can document. In more modern popular culture and entertainment, ghosts are a popular mainstay—from A Christmas Carol and Casper the Friendly Ghost to The Amityville Horror, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist, The Sixth Sense, and Ghost Whisperer. This book comprehensively examines ghost and spirit phenomena in all its incarnations to provide readers with a holistic perspective on the subject. It presents insightful information about the contribution of a specific work or author to establish or further the evolution of ghost lore, rather than concentrating solely on the film, literature, music, or folklore itself. The book focuses on ghosts in western culture but also provides information about spirit phenomena and lore in international settings, as many of the trends in popular culture dealing with ghosts and spirits are informed by authors and filmmakers from Germany, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom. The writers and editors are experts and scholars in the field and enthusiastic fans of ghost lore, ghost films, ghost hunting, and urban legends, resulting in entries that are informative and engaging—and make this the most complete and current resource on ghost and spirit lore available.

Book Wordsworth s Biblical Ghosts

Download or read book Wordsworth s Biblical Ghosts written by D. Westbrook and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-09-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible serves Wordsworth as a basis for his poetry and poetics, providing language, images, figures, and importantly, a paradigm of poetic genres. Working from three interrelated critical approaches - intertextuality, poetics, and metaphysics - Westbrook first analyzes Wordsworth's theory and practice as these reflect the New Testament doctrine of the Incarnation. Subsequent chapters consider Wordsworth's adaptation of biblical narrative forms - etymological tales, parables, and mystical allegories. Closing chapters examine some extraordinary linguistic innovations in Wordsworth's revisions of biblical apocalypse, techniques that permit the poet to express the ineffable and to reveal nothing.
