Download or read book Ghosts in Popular Culture and Legend written by June Michele Pulliam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With entries that range from specific works to authors, folklore, and popular culture (including music, film, television, urban legend, and gaming), this book provides a single-volume resource on all things ghostly in the United States and in other countries. The concept of ghosts has been an ongoing and universal element in human culture as far back as recorded history can document. In more modern popular culture and entertainment, ghosts are a popular mainstay—from A Christmas Carol and Casper the Friendly Ghost to The Amityville Horror, Ghostbusters, Poltergeist, The Sixth Sense, and Ghost Whisperer. This book comprehensively examines ghost and spirit phenomena in all its incarnations to provide readers with a holistic perspective on the subject. It presents insightful information about the contribution of a specific work or author to establish or further the evolution of ghost lore, rather than concentrating solely on the film, literature, music, or folklore itself. The book focuses on ghosts in western culture but also provides information about spirit phenomena and lore in international settings, as many of the trends in popular culture dealing with ghosts and spirits are informed by authors and filmmakers from Germany, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom. The writers and editors are experts and scholars in the field and enthusiastic fans of ghost lore, ghost films, ghost hunting, and urban legends, resulting in entries that are informative and engaging—and make this the most complete and current resource on ghost and spirit lore available.

Download or read book Topper written by Thorne Smith and published by Phoemixx Classics Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-01-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topper Thorne Smith - Thorne Smith's hilarious and ribald comedy about boring and staid bank manager Cosmo Topper who decides to buy a flashy car only to discover it is haunted by its previous owners, George and Marion Kerby. George's and Marion's mischievous spirits (and a few other ghostly friends and an irresistible dog) make it their mission to lead the respectable Topper astray and give him a fresh outlook on life. Liquor flows, pranks are common, and although not always willing, George becomes a new man. He realizes life is what you make of it, and there are so many possibilities. Laugh out loud when Marion scares away the clientele and staff of a boutique or when George challenges Topper to a duel with clam shells. Thorne Smith's ghosts, their wit and repartee, are bound to entertain. Topper is the perfect beach read. As captivating today as when it was first written in 1926, Topper set the standard for a host of other ghost stories and was made into a movie starring Cary Grant (1936) and adapted for a TV series (1953). A remake of the movie is scheduled starring comedian Steve Martin as Topper, but no production start date has been set. "[Thorne Smith] created the modern American ghost. A ghost with style and wit. A ghost that haunts us still." --New York Times
Download or read book A Book Without Chapters written by Rohit Sharma and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A love triangle ... King Joseph (KJ), Jasmine, and Riot ... ... The year is 1966; it is the time when it is a sort of fashion that people study things for years at a stretch and become proficient in them. Moreover, he is the Ph.D (Psychology) scholar King Joseph, the mastermind genius KJ of the Oxford University. What next is to happen in this novel is quite obvious. KJ has worked hard 'night and day' and has become proficient in his topic of thesis, that is, to study the effect of perfumes on human mind so well that has become capable to alter and hence control the emotions of people he wants by exposing them to fragrances; even of the mentors of his esteemed institution named Oxford. But of no use! Alas! He cannot alter the mind of Jasmine whom he has recently fallen in love with. The reason is that she is so fond of jasmine perfume that already remains surrounded by its fragrance all the time. For some time, the story tells us that how he tries to deal with the situation. But further, Riot, his old and estranged friend comes in the scene to make the matters worst for him. Of course, in the Oxford where numerous subjects are studied and taught, occult sciences have never been in the prohibited list. Riot had finished doing his Ph.D in them quite a long time ago. In fact, Riot is an occultist who has spent his entire academic life studying Indian sciences like yoga, transcendental meditation, astral projections, remote viewing, telepathy, psychokinesis, and a lot many others including some such ones too which come under the category of black magic. Even KJ sees that with his slight wish, he can lift people in the air and make them fly. This story was originally written scene by scene to claim the Oscar Award one day for original screenplay but landed here in front of you, just by chance. The name 'A Book Without Chapters' has its meaning explained in the last pages when even despite being bloodthirsty in the rivalry of a love triangle situation, Joseph (KJ) realizes that he, Riot, Jasmine, everyone, just everyone, even the person reading this novel's introduction right now, is just like a book. The main difference however lies in the fact that some books in this world are with chapters and some are without chapters. The concept of simulation of a person as a book is so simple and so strong that the writer expects that the reader shall also begin to see one's own life as a book, just as the actors of this novel begin to do by the end. LET US SEE NOW, WHAT KIND OF BOOK YOU DISCOVER YOURSELF AS ! !!
