Download or read book Petermann s Maps written by Jan Smits and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, showing maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book.An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the return of the surviving sled dogs of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1912 from Antarctica, where they had helped Roald Amundsen become the first human to reach the South Pole. This book is the sequel to the highly acclaimed Roald Amundsen’s Sled Dogs: The Sledge Dogs Who Helped Discover the South Pole. It chronicles how the sled dogs were used internationally to further promote the expedition’s great achievement and follows some of the dogs as they undertake subsequent expeditions – with Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–1914, which made scientific discoveries, and with Arve Staxrud’s Norwegian Arctic Rescue Mission of 1913, which saved members of the Herbert Schröder-Stranz German Arctic Expedition. The book tracks the remaining 39 sled dogs to their next challenging adventures and their final destinations in Argentina, Norway, Antarctica, and Australia. Like its predecessor, the book portrays how Amundsen continued to utilize the Polar dogs – both in their lives and in their deaths – to propel his career and solidify his expedition's image.

Download or read book The Geographical Tradition written by David Livingstone and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1993-01-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geographical Tradition dpresents the history of an essentially contested tradition. By examining a series of key episodes in geography's history since 1400, Livingstone argues that the messy contingencies of history are to be preferred to the manufactured idealizations of the standard chronicles. Throughout, the development of geographical thought and practice is portrayed against the background of the broader social and intellectual contexts of the times. Among the topics investigated are geography during the Age of Reconnaissance, the Scientific Revolution and The Englightenment; subsequently geography's relationships with Darwinism, imperialism, regionalism, and quantification are elaborated.
