Book On the Zoological Geography of the Malay Archipelago

Download or read book On the Zoological Geography of the Malay Archipelago written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1859 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'On the Zoological Geography of the Malay Archipelago' is an article detailing Wallace's observations during his travels in Asia. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

Book excerpt: Since 1981, hundreds of botanists around the globe have been studying names, specimens and illustrations in order to identify type specimens so that all Linnaeus’ plant names can be applied clearly and consistently worldwide. This book is the culmination of more than twenty-five years research. It provides a comprehensive catalogue, listing each Linnaean name, and also contains detailed accounts both of Linnaeus’ publications and those of other botanists that contributed to his understanding of plants. This landmark work will be published to mark the tercentenary of Linnaeus’ birth in May 2007.

Book Development Growth and Evolution

Download or read book Development Growth and Evolution written by Paul O'Higgins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-04-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to provide accessible accounts of these advances in developmental biology for the non-expert, together with contributions from hominid palaeontologists, which aim to bring this developmental perspective to bear on interpretation of the skeletal record of human evolution. This combined approach is, as yet, in its infancy but it is likely that it will impact significantly on palaeoanthropology and palaeontolgy in general.

Book Early Flowers and Angiosperm Evolution

Download or read book Early Flowers and Angiosperm Evolution written by Else Marie Friis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent discovery of diverse fossil flowers and floral organs in Cretaceous strata has revealed astonishing details about the structural and systematic diversity of early angiosperms. Exploring the rich fossil record that has accumulated over the last three decades, this is a unique study of the evolutionary history of flowering plants from their earliest phases in obscurity to their dominance in modern vegetation. The discussion provides comprehensive biological and geological background information, before moving on to summarise the fossil record in detail. Including previously unpublished results based on research into Early and Late Cretaceous fossil floras from Europe and North America, the authors draw on direct palaeontological evidence of the pattern of angiosperm evolution through time. Synthesising palaeobotanical data with information from living plants, this unique book explores the latest research in the field, highlighting connections with phylogenetic systematics, structure and the biology of extant angiosperms.

Book Ancient Botany

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gavin Hardy
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-10-05
  • ISBN : 1134386788
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Ancient Botany written by Gavin Hardy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gavin Hardy and Laurence Totelin have brought together their botanical and historical knowledge to produce this unique overview of ancient botany. It examines all the founding texts of botanical science, such as Theophrastus' Enquiry into Plants, Dioscorides' Materia Medica, Pliny the Elder's Natural History, Nicolaus of Damascus' On Plants, and Galen' On Simple Remedies, but also includes lesser known texts ranging from the sixth century BCE to the seventh century CE, as well as some material evidence. The authors adopt a thematic approach rather than a chronological one, considering important issues such as the definition of a plant, nomenclature, classifications, physiology, the link between plants and their environment, and the numerous usages of plants in the ancient world. The book also takes care to place ancient botany in its historical, social and economic context. The authors have explained all technical botanical terms and ancient history notions, and as a result, this work will appeal to historians of ancient science, medicine and technology; classicists; and botanists interested in the history of their discipline.

  • Author : Daniela Bleichmar
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Visible Empire written by Daniela Bleichmar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1777 and 1816, botanical expeditions crisscrossed the vast Spanish empire in an ambitious project to survey the flora of much of the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Philippines. While these voyages produced written texts and compiled collections of specimens, they dedicated an overwhelming proportion of their resources and energy to the creation of visual materials. European and American naturalists and artists collaborated to manufacture a staggering total of more than 12,000 botanical illustrations. Yet these images have remained largely overlooked—until now. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Daniela Bleichmar gives this archive its due, finding in these botanical images a window into the worlds of Enlightenment science, visual culture, and empire. Through innovative interdisciplinary scholarship that bridges the histories of science, visual culture, and the Hispanic world, Bleichmar uses these images to trace two related histories: the little-known history of scientific expeditions in the Hispanic Enlightenment and the history of visual evidence in both science and administration in the early modern Spanish empire. As Bleichmar shows, in the Spanish empire visual epistemology operated not only in scientific contexts but also as part of an imperial apparatus that had a long-established tradition of deploying visual evidence for administrative purposes.
