Rowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineerings, Originally the Society of Telegraph Engineers, 1915, Vol. 53 The Council defined their attitude towards such interests in their last Annual Report, wherein it was stated that the Council will in future, as in the past, within the provisions of the Memorandum of Association, take such action in respect of legislative or industrial matters as may conduce to the general advancement of electricity and its applica tions, and will give full consideration to any representa tions made to them while preserving impartiality to all sections of the electrical industry. I think all members, except perhaps a few extreme sectarians, will desire that the Council should preserve an absolute impartiality towards all sections of the profession; but that must not be interpreted as standing aloof and doing nothing to promote the interests of the profession as a whole. I think some organization: can be created which will be constantly ready to consider any question that may arise from among the many sectional interests which the Institution incorporates. The most flexible organiza tion that I can suggest is the formation of a standing Ad visory Committee, composed, say, of the President, three Past Presidents, and three Members of Council. There must be, first, some continuity of action on the part of such a Committee, and that is why I suggest that some of its members should be Past Presidents, otherwise the Committee would be continually changing in its personnel. On the other hand, three Members of Council and the President for the time being would bring in fresh blood. This standing Advisory Committee might be given power to add to its number, choosing from among other members of the Institution. 1 do not know, of course, how this suggestion will commend itself to the Council, and it must be understood that I am only expressing my own opinion. Suppose a Government Bill be brought in to amend the Electric Lighting Acts, I would suggest that the draft Bill should be referred to the Advisory Committee for report, the Committee thus acting also as a Parliamentary Committee. A few outside Corporate Members or Associates would be invited to join them ad hoc, and so a strong committee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Originally the Society of Telegraph Engineers, 1920: Supplement to Vol. 57, 1919 After a great deal of consideration Gamgee decided to adopt thermo-electric couples in preference to resist ance thermometers, and I think it will be generally agreed that for work of high precision his decision was a correct one. The construction of his apparatus is fully explained in his paper, but it may be of interest to give a short description. The thermometers used were of two kinds, one for taking the temperature of the surface of the skin and the second for the temperature of the cavities of the body. The materials of which the thermo-electric couples were made were copper-constantan, materials which long experience has shown form' one of the most satisfactory thermo-elements. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1922, Vol. 60: Originally the Society of Telegraph Engineers Fifty years ago Maxwell predicted that research on electricity in gases would be the avenue by which the constitution of matter might be penetrated. This has been wonderfully justified, but we are far from the end. It is easy to utilize molecular energy, to make and unmake molecules the whole science of chemistry and of organic life depends on the power to do this. There remains the stupendous step of unlocking atoms into their component electrons on an engineering scale, and the still greater feat of untwisting electrons into their mother ether. This would be the end of physical analysis; beyond it there is the problem of how to make electrons. SO far as inorganic matter is concerned, that would certainly be the end of synthesis, for if, as seems probable, positive and negative electrons differ only in the direction, right or left hand, of their twists, no new kinds could be manufactured, nor could man-made matter differ essentially from that we now know. Our present knowledge, which extends by observa tion of spectra to the farthest visible star, is that there are only two kinds of electricity, the units of which are minute permanent right and left handed strains Of the ether, and that all atoms are groups of these two kinds. A loose charged molecule is a possible ion or moving carrier of electricity. Since molecules of gases are separated more than those of liquids, the phenomena depending on ionization in gases are on the whole simpler than those in liquids. We begin then with the two kinds of gaseous ions, positive and negative, and study their production and behaviour in electric fields of every possible type. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1918, Vol. 56: Originally the Society of Telegraph Engineers It is of the utmost importance to the well - being of I the Institution that any feeling of the kind I have mentioned should be wiped out I confess it is difficult to see what more could be done, but I think it would be desirable occasionally to hold a full meeting with President and Council in some of the more important centres, such as Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, and possibly Glasgow. It will be argued I by London members that it is making a serious demand on them to ask them to go so far afield as Scotland, but the Scottish members may very well retort that it is just as far from Glasgow to London as from London to Glasgow, and I think the effort ought to be made. Not only would such a course quicken the interest of the members resident in the district, but it would serve the independent purpose of making the Institution better known to those outside the profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1914, Vol. 52: Originally the Society of Telegraph Engineers, Victoria Embankment, London W. C Most of them are fully described in the literature on the subject, a list of which I give in an Appendix. Under the heading of Pressure Rises I wish you to understand any rise in pressure above its normal value, but I propose to exclude from my address those accidental pressure rises which may occur should the Speed of a generator become unduly high or should the current from a high-tension source get into a low-tension circuit, and to discuss those cases which take place during the apparently normal Operation of the station or during faults on the mains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Late the Society of Telegraph-Engineers and Electricians, Vol. 32: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science; May, 1903 Mr. M. Solomon: I should like to add a few remarks to what has yeti-0mm already been said on the Nernst lamp, especially with reference to Professor Ayrton's comments on the candle-power curves shown by Mr. Drake. Of course one does not always get such good results as these, especially so good as those in the curve in Fig. A, which repre sents the mean result of tests on three lamps. That curve does drop a certain amount, and the curve in Fig. B drops rather more, but perhaps the average curve obtained with the commercial lamp of to-day drops more than either. Still I would point out one fact with reference to judging the performance of the lamps by those which one sees burning in shops, namely that in the first part of the curve there is a very marked drop in candle-power from about 130 to 110. My experience is that there is always a drop corresponding to that, though not perhaps always so great, and sometimes a little greater. The result is that after the first 50 hours the light from a Nernst lamp seems to change a good deal in colour on account of this first drop. The light is a very white one at first and remains white during the whole life, but one notices a considerable difference in shade if two lamps, one new and one 50 hours old, are observed side by side. But after that drop the candle-power remains fairly steady, as shown by the curve, which is quite a typical one. When the curve drops Off sharply towards the end it is a sign that the lamp is about to fail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1889, Vol. 18 The Addresses of past-presidents of the parent Societies of Telegraph Engineers, and telegraph-engineers and Electricians illustrate also the growing desire to know something of the molecular theory or the dynamical theory of electricity and magnetism. Mr. Preece, in his Address of 1880, pointed out how Maxwell had shown the velocity of light to be related to electricity in such a way that we can scarcely doubt but that the propagation of electro-magnetic disturbance through space, which we have every reason to believe does exist - which, in fact, from known laws we may say certainly does exist - is effected with a velocity equal to that of light, and that the propagation of electrical disturbance and of light may perhaps be identical. In support of these remarks, Mr. Preece alluded to the disturbances at the sun's surface and the simultaneous magnetic disturbances which had been observed in the telegraphs and in other operations of an electro - magnetic character on the surface of the earth.
