Download or read book The Ethics and Politics of Human Experimentation written by Paul Murray McNeill and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1993-05-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author finds that these committees are predominantly influenced by members of research institutions and by the researchers themselves. Yet researchers, and their institutions, stand to gain considerable benefits from the experiments they conduct. Dr McNeill argues that committees of review, as they are presently constituted, cannot be relied on to ensure an equitable balance between the interests of researchers and the interests of the human subjects experimented on. He proposes a radically different rationale and model for committee review.

Download or read book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Download or read book Taiwan s COVID 19 Experience written by Ming-Cheng M. Lo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and develops the ongoing conversation about how Taiwan navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasizing the themes of governance and governmentality, it moves the foci of the discussion from COVID policies to the social and political orders undergirding the statecraft of pandemic management. Furthermore, it analyzes how the pandemic fostered a historical moment at which new forms of governance and governmentality were beginning to take root. It also situates Taiwan’s precarious nationhood in its global context, thereby challenging a prevalent methodological nationalism – the assumption that the nation is a natural unit of analysis whose borders are more or less unquestioned – and contributing to decolonizing Western theories with perspectives from the Global South. Presenting rich original materials on the legal and public debates, individual reflections, and grassroots campaigns during COVID, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Taiwan's governance and social health policy, as well as medical anthropology and sociology.

This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, are a growing problem across the world’s aging population. Oxidative stress in the brain plays a central role in a common pathophysiology of these diseases. This book presents scientific research on the potential of antioxidant therapy in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. This book outlines the roles of oxidative stress and diabetes mellitus in neurodegeneration, describes the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders including the roles of environmental pollutants and inflammatory responses, and explores mitochondrial dysfunction. It then describes the protective abilities of antioxidants – including vitamin D, tocotrienol and coenzyme Q10 – against neurodegeneration. The book demonstrates the therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets, and highlights the roles of medicinal plants, phytopharmaceuticals, traditional medicines and food nutrients in neuroprotection. Key Features: Explains damage caused by numerous neurodegenerative disorders and the possible protection offered by antioxidants and functional foods. Describes molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration by oxidative stress, advancing age, diabetes and mitochondrial dysfunctions. Demonstrates protection offered by nutraceuticals, antioxidants, botanical extracts and functional foods. The book contains twenty-three chapters divided into six sections written by leading researchers. This book is essential reading for health professionals, dietitians, food and nutrition scientists and anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of etiology of neurodegenerative diseases.

Download or read book Life Death and Eternity written by Dr. Kawa Amin and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although uncertainty is an inherent part of life, it is universally agreed that death, as the end of an individual’s current known life, is inevitable. Yet extensive research and careful analysis of scientific literature seems to show that our existence may continue beyond what we currently understand. It is possible that we will transition through different stages, adapting to new environments and circumstances. Therefore, the future holds the potential for exciting discoveries and a deeper understanding of what it means to be alive. In an academic presentation, consultant geriatrician Dr. Kawa Amin delves into the fascinating realm of immortality and the attempts throughout history to overcome the inevitability of death. While intertwining scientific evidence with philosophy, faith, and theology, Dr. Amin delivers a comprehensive qualitative analysis while meticulously considering several dimensions in relation to immortality and clarifying complex concepts such as resurrection, life, and death. Life, Death, and Eternity combines scientific research with faith and philosophy to provide a deeper understanding of the concept of resurrection and the spiritual aspects of life and death.

Download or read book Psychology for Health Professionals written by Patricia Barkway and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to psychology for allied health students and it encourages an understanding of the complex and interactive nature of the factors which influence an individual's health behaviours and health outcomes. Through the use of real life examples, contemporary research and case studies students will be able to apply the material in the text to the health behaviours of the people they care for, their colleagues and themselves. Unlike many health psychology textbooks this new book examines individual personality and psychological theory within the social context of people's lives. This approach is taken because of the increasing awareness that a person's behaviour is not only influenced by internal biological and psychological factors, but also by external factors within the person's social and physical environment. The first half of the book outlines psychological and other relevant theory whilst in the second half those theories are applied to health issues and healthcare practice. Chapters 1—5 presents psychological, lifespan and social theory; chapter 6 addresses the role and contribution of research to healthcare practice; and chapters 7—13 covers the psychological aspects of specific health encounters, issues and interventions. - developmental psychology – theories of development and how do we study development along with problems of researching early lifespan development are also discussed. Behavioural interventions with children, adolescents and their families are highlighted - models and theories which provide an understanding of and suggest strategies to change health behaviours are presented, as are explanations for human responses to stress, pain and loss - critical thinking questions, case studies and examples of research are included throughout the text to encourage students to reflect on the application of theory to practice, and activities are provided for lecturers to use in the classroom - learning objectives, critical reflection boxes, diagrams and figures to enhance learning, cases studies from different health professions, chapter summaries, glossaries, recommended reading lists, internet based resources, challenge questions and exercises - Evolve website – the activities, case studies, testbanks and powerpoint presentations will complete the package and further demonstrate the integration of psychological principles within the health context
