This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Hygiene, 1909, Vol. 9 The rats examined for September, 1907, were very largely collected from the infected districts, the remaining months give a truer picture of the condition of the entire rat population. It will be noted that while the incidence of human plague was greatest in the warm, dry months, rat plague was greatest in the cold, wet months. It is believed that this is explained by the fact that the rats congregate in their burrows to avoid the cold and wet and that their close proximity permits one infected rodent to distribute Bacillus pestis-laden fleas to all the other inhabitants of the warren. Book The Columbus Medical Journal 1905 Vol 29 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Columbus Medical Journal 1905 Vol 29 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Columbus Medical Journal, 1905, Vol. 29 It is surprising how little we really know, or possibly can know, of the most common objects or principles about which we so frequently speak or think. True, we may know many things about them as to their superficial qualities or manifest properties, and about their attendant phenomena and practical uses, but yet, little or nothing of their essential constitution. This is so of electricity, heat, chemical afinity and gravity, but more especially so of that subtile and powerful principle called Life, as we have it manifested in the vegetable and animal king dom of nature. Electricity is usually defined to be a subtile agent excited with glass or amber, by which bodies are attracted or repelled or created by chemical action causing attraction or repulsion between bodies or particles of matter, producing at times, shocks of the animal system, mechanical violence, light, heat, and accelerated chemical action. These are only the effects of electricity and no explanation whatever of its real essence. Light is spoken of as the agent or medium of vision, through which the external world is made visible to man and animals by means of the natural eye. There is nothing in this definition as to its essence, for the reason that such is beyond human ken or comprehension. Heat or caloric is the principle which causes warmth, expansion of matter and combustion, and it is mysteriously connected with all the other agencies just mentioned, insomuch as, that under certain well known condi tions, they are mutually convertible the one into the other. This is shown by the fact that one and the same wire, heavily charged with the electric current, will propel, heat and light. Download or read book The American Journal of Hygiene 1922 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by William H. Welch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Hygiene, 1922, Vol. 2 In our routine procedure the soil was thoroughly broken up be fore being emptied into the sieves. Precautions should be taken not to carry over a little of the soil from one sample to another, and to keep the bottom of the sieve from contact with any dirt. The water used in the funnels was usually heated to a temperature of about 115° F. A funnel, after being set up, was filled within an inch and a half of the rim, so that when the sieve was placed in position there would be no contact between the water and the bottom of the sieve. Water of the same temperature was then poured over the rim of the funnel, until it was practically full and the level of the water almost an inch above the bottom of the sieve. The samples were usually set up in the isolating apparatus some time during the day and left stand ing over night before the examinations were made. One method of drawing off the samples of water for microscopical examination was to attach a second clamp higher on the tube and to allow the water between the two clamps to run Off into a 50 cc. Centrifuge tube (see Fig. A simpler method is to slightly Open the clamp at the bottom of the rubber tube and let the water run out until the centri fuge tube is filled. After centrifugation the supernatant water was drawn Off with a long pipette and the residue spread out on a two-by three-inch slide, for microscopical examination: In some instances, when the soil sample was of saturated clay or very finely divided sand, a considerable amount of sediment would fall into the funnel. This could, if necessary, be reduced in amount by running it through a smaller isolating appartus before microscopical examination. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Hygiene, 1917-18, Vol. 16 A summary of the results obtained in this series of experiments shows in a conclusive manner that pneumonic-plague-infected marmots can readily transmit the infection through the respiratory passages as in the case of man. Conditio'ns which favour the propagation of the disease among the latter are in no way different for these animals. Close contact and moist surroundings seem to favour the rapid spread of infection from animal to animal. Out of seven marmots inoculated by inhalation, five (71 died after 4-6 days with acute pneumonic plague and septicaemia. Nine contacts placed with infected animals after periods varying from 1 - 4 days showed a mortality of 77 These seven marmots died after 4 - 6 days' contact. Here also, as in the preceding series, was noted a remarkably short incubation period, with marked infectivity on the part of the sprayed animals.
