Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1919, Vol. 28 Throughout the whole organic world the essential food element most difficult to acquire is nitrogen, as all nitrogen must ultimately come from the atmosphere and the power of combining with this gas is limited to a few microorganisms. Upon the nitrifying bacteria, then, all higher plants and animals are dependent for their nitrogen which is handed from one organism to another, linking all together into one great interdependency which has been called the nitrogen cycle. I insert a diagram from Bayliss which clearly illustrates this cycle. The accessory circles and the lines that connect them are additions based on my experiments. The search of the insect for nitrogen is very complicated and has been, at times, obscure. Indeed, little definite information is at hand concerning the food requirements in general of these organisms, as the material consumed is often in large part merely the substratum for a small amount of assimilable food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 27: 1918-1919 While the sex ratios for the inbred litters of the eighth to the twenty-fifth generations varied considerably, the variation was much less after the twelfth generation than before (table A part of this variation was doubtless phenotypic, Since seasonal changes in temperature seem to alter the sex ratio in the rat (king and Stotsenburg, and probably also other agencies, such as the age of the mother (king, '16 a), have a similar effect. As all of the sex ratios were relatively high, however, the devia tions from the norm cannot be ascribed either to environment or to chance, so they must have been due, in part at least, to the manner in which the breeding animals were selected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1918, Vol. 24 No attempt to review or abstract from the literature the facts relating to dedifferentiation in metazoa will be made. This has been done in an excellent summary and review by Schultz Schultz formulated the observations on metazoa in terms of the hypothesis that all phenomena of form regulation are somehow related to and a result of the reversal of differentiation or de differentiation. In other words regeneration is a result of the differentiation of dedifferentiated cells (see also Child. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1919, Vol. 29 A layer Of paraffin blackened with carbon was put into a Syracuse Watch-glass and in it were made six grooves, each sufficiently wide to admit an embryo lying ventral side up. After the thyroid gland was removed the embryo was left in position for about an hour or until five other operations had been performed, the first then being removed to make room for the seventh. By that time the wound had sufficiently healed to permit handling with a pipette. Asepsis was found to be unneccessary. The operations were performed under a binocular microscope. A transverse incision was made with fine scissors through the ectoderm posterior to the oral plate, the flap Of ectoderm covering the thyroid anlage was pulled caudally, the mesenchyma pushed laterally or removed, and the exposed anlage Of the thyroid was removed together with that portion Of the ventral wall of the pharynx surrounding its proximal margin. The thyroid being Opaque is readily distinguished from the translucent mesenchyma. Care must be taken to avoid injury to the pericardium and heart. Usually the wound appeared to be healed in two or three hours. After the Operation (one to two hours) the salt solution was gradually diluted with tap-water. It was found that the em bryos were harmed by being left too long in the saline. Many sylvatica larvae were kept together in the same aquarium, but the Amblystoma larvae were isolated to prevent their eating one another's gills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1943, Vol. 25 This study has been carried a little further and included other birds with abnormal sex behavior, but normal structure. That is, to complete the more female end Of the series, we have studied several apparently normal hens that tread other hens. Of these, 1422 was sent from West Virginia by Professor Atwood as a pos sible hermaphrodite but has behaved normally 'in Maine. K134 and m4o8 were two such birds reared at the Station plant and finally killed to study their anatomy and histology. TO complete the more male end Of the series we have studied two guinea-chicken hybrids, one raised on the Maine poultry plant and the other sent in for examination from the country. Their gonads appeared to be testes, but their behavior was indifferent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1912, Vol. 12 But differences in the size of cells may be due, not to unequal cell division, but to unequal rates of division, or to unequal growth of cells subsequent to division. In some instances cells divide rarely and consequently become large, while adjoining cells divide frequently and therefore remain small. The fact that cells are not always of the same size at the time of division is one of capital importance for it shows conclusively that the factors which bring about cell division may be separated from those which cause growth. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1936, Vol. 20 In a recent paper1 I reported an attempt to obtain a modified clone of Hydra Viridis by the continued selection of variates dif fering in the number of tentacles. In that experiment a clone was bred from a single wild polyp and two groups of its descend ants, each composed of 25 lines, were selected for variations in tentacle number in opposite directions from the mean of the clone. Selection was continued for several generations, then the number of tentacles of all buds produced by the last selected gen eration of the 50 lines was recorded and the averages of the two groups were compared. A slight difference, in the direction of selection, was found in the averages of the earlier buds of the two groups but this difference did not persist in the buds pro duced later by the same parents; regression was complete in a single generation.
