Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on his work in Traditional Oral Epic and Immanent Art, the author aims to dissolve the perceived barrier between oral and written, creating a theory from oral-formulaic theory and the ethnography of speaking and ethnopoetics. He argues that a work's word-power derives from its performance and its implied traditional context.

  • ISBN : 1906833702
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book In the Beginning written by Immanuel Velikovsky and published by Paradigma Ltd. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel (or better: a prequel) to Immanuel Velikovsky's main work, the best-selling Worlds in Collision, in which he gave a detailed reconstruction of two global natural catastrophes based on information handed down by our ancestors. He mentioned there that, as part of his intensive research, he found numerous indications of even more catastrophes that took place earlier in the history of mankind. In the present book, the material collected by Velikovksy about this topic is presented to the public for the first time. His findings show just how turbulent the history of Earth and our planetary system was during the time of mankind and how little we actually know of all that today.

Download or read book Field Recordings of Black Singers and Musicians written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional African musical forms have long been accepted as fundamental to the emergence of blues and jazz. Yet there has been little effort at compiling recorded evidence to document their development. This discography brings together hundreds of recordings that trace in detail the evolution of the African American musical experience, from early wax cylinder recordings made in West Africa to voodoo rituals from the Carribean Basin to the songs of former slaves in the American South.

  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Before Salem written by Richard S. Ross III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades before the Salem Witch trials, 11 people were hanged as witches in the Connecticut River Valley. The advent of witch hunting in New England was directly influenced by the English Civil War and the witch trials in England led by Matthew Hopkins, who pioneered "techniques" for examining witches. This history examines the outbreak of witch hysteria in the Valley, focusing on accusations of demonic possession, apotropaic magic and the role of the clergy. Although the hysteria was eventually quelled by a progressive magistrate unwilling to try witches, accounts of the trials later influenced contemporary writers during the Salem witch hunts. The source of the document "Grounds for Examination of a Witch" is identified.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking collection of essays on a hitherto underexplored subject that challenges the existing stereotypical views of the trivial and innocent nature of children's culture, this work reveals for the first time the artistic and complex interactions among children. Based on research of scholars from such diverse fields as American studies, anthropology, education, folklore, psychology, and sociology, this volume represents a radical new attempt to redefine and reinterpret the expressive behaviors of children. The book is divided into four major sections: history, methodology, genres, and setting, with a concluding chapter on theory. Each section is introduced by an overview by Brian Sutton-Smith. The accompanying bibliography lists historical references through the present, representing works by scholars for over 100 years.

Book Folklore for Stalin

Download or read book Folklore for Stalin written by Frank J. Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the First Congress of Soviet Writers in 1934, folklore, like literature, became an instrument of the political propagandist. Folklorists devoted considerable efforts to attending to what purported to be a rebirth of the Russian epic tradition, producing works of pseudofolklore that as often as not featured Joseph Stalin in the hero's role. Miller's account of this curious episode in the history of popular culture and totalitarian politics, and his synopses and translations of "classic" examples of folklore for Stalin, seek to serve as a resource not only for the study of contemporary folklore but also for the political scientist.
