The earlier investigations were necessarily confined largely to methods of isolation, descriptions of the organisms found and studies of their behaviour in certain culture solutions, but sufficient of this preliminary work has been done to enable us to attack the real problem and try to Obtain a picture of the life in the soil as it actually is. For this purpose it is necessary to know the relative abundance of the various organisms, to find out which are active and which inert, and to discover what the active forms are doing and what is their mode of life. Before the bacteriological and zoological work can be fully interpreted, however, it is necessary to discover the conditions under which life in the soil goes on, and in the series of papers, of which this is the first, it is proposed to deal with the air supply, water supply, and. Temperature of our own soils. And by comparison with other investigations to see how far the observed relationships hold generally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Agricultural Research, Vol. 4: April-September, 1915 In March, 1912, specimens of tomatoes (lycopersicon esculentum) affected with a fruit rot were sent in for examination from Cutler, Fla. Mr. James B. Brown, who selected and sent in the specimens, stated in an accompanying letter that great loss had been caused among the farmers of Dade County, Fla, by this fruit-spotting. When received, some of the fruit was green, some ripe, and some just beginning to color. Most of the tomatoes had conspicuous dark spots on the side and at the stem end. These spots, occurring on both green and ripe fruit and measuring I to 3 cm. In diameter, were brownish black in color, with definite outlines, while on the surface of the largest spots tiny dark pustules could be seen. The firm, discolored tissue of the spots was somewhat sunken, forming slight depressions, the surface of which was membranous or crustlike, according to the stage of development. On the ripe fruit the dark tissue was surrounded by a more or less watery looking zone. Plate A, figure I, shows the fruit-spotting as it appeared upon one of the Cutler specimens. The plants were dried to constant weight in a steam-heated oven, main tained at approximately 110° C. When the plants produced grain, the water requirement based upon the weight of the dry grain is also given. The percentage of grain produced by the plants grown in the pots usually compared favorably with the field performance. Unless a normal per centage of grain is produced, the water-requirement ratio based on grain production should not be applied to crops grown under field conditions. In a few instances the water requirement based upon the weight of roots or tubers has also been determined.
