Book excerpt: John Barrickman (1796-1886) was the son of Jacob Barrickman (b.1763) and Jane Swan (b.1767) of Newport, Kentucky. Her parents were Hugh Swan and Martha Benson also of Newport, Kentucky. John's grandfather was Georg Peter Bergmann (b.1726) who was born near Mittlebach, Pfalz, Germany, the son of Johannes Bergmann and Katherine Schott. Georg Peter married Anna Ursella at Mausbach in 1746. Georg and his family emigrated in 1749 and settled in Fredrick Co., Maryland. He married (2) Elizabeth Antis in Westmoreland Co., PA. John married Sarah Shepard, the daughter of Soloman and Elizabeth Shepard of Bracken Co., Kentucky and Shelby Co., Illinois in 1827. They were the parents of eight known children: Andrew, Robert, John S., William, James, Susanann, Elizabeth Jane and Soloman Jackson Barrickman. Several family members are buried in Shelby Co., Ill. Several generations of descendants are given.
