Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A naval officer, naturalist and draughtsman, John Hunter was born in Scotland. He came to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788 as second captain of HMS Sirius, under the command of Arthur Phillip. Reaching Botany Bay, Hunter surveyed the area with Philip, before deciding on Port Jackson as a more suitable site to land. He was appointed second governor of the colony of New South Wales in 1795. Hunter's personal sketchbooks from his time in Australia a filled with colourful and appealing drawings of the birds, animals and flowers of New South Wales and of Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. They are among the earliest colonial impressions of Australia. Humorous and even quirky at times, Hunter's drawings, which make up the body of the sketchbook, provide both an artist's view of the world around him and a documentation of the flora and fauna of early colonial Australia. Hunter's sketches also offer an intriguing attempt to represent a natural world that had no existing visual tradition within British and European culture. Considered a compassionate man, Hunter's association with the new colony was fraught with difficulty and rebellion. His governorship ended when he was recalled to England in 1800. Featuring the sketches from Captain John Hunter's sketchbook, the John Hunter Address Book showcases what is regarded as one of the most remarkable treasures among the National Library of Australia collections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “His ideas will help anyone who has the courage to understand that a real education must go beyond filling in circles on a standardized test form.” —Rafe Esquith, New York Times-bestselling author of Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire Can playing a game lead to world peace? If it’s John Hunter’s World Peace Game, it just might. In Hunter’s classroom, students take on the roles of presidents, tribal leaders, diplomats, and military commanders. Through battles and negotiations, standoffs and summits, they strive to resolve a sequence of many-layered, interconnected scenarios, from nuclear proliferation to tribal warfare. Now, Hunter shares inspiring stories from over thirty years of teaching the World Peace Game, revealing the principles of successful collaboration that people of any age can apply. He offers not only a forward-thinking report from the frontlines of American education, but also a generous blueprint for a world that bends toward cooperation rather than conflict. In this deeply hopeful book, a visionary educator shows us what the future of education can be. “The World Peace Game devised by fourth-grade teacher Hunter has spread from a classroom in 1978 to a documentary, a TED Talk, the Pentagon, and now finally a book, in which he describes the ways his students have solved political and ecological crises that still loom large in the world of adults . . . Hunter’s optimism is infectious.” —Publishers Weekly “Inspired, breath-of-fresh-air reading.” — Kirkus Reviews “Hunter proves the value of ‘slow teaching’ in this important, fascinating, highly readable resource for educators and parents alike.” — Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the final three decades of Haydn’s career, this book uses the composer as a prism through which to examine urgent questions across the humanities. In this far-reaching work of music history and criticism, Nicholas Mathew reimagines the world of Joseph Haydn and his contemporaries, with its catastrophic upheavals and thrilling sense of potential. In the process, Mathew tackles critical questions of particular moment: how we tell the history of the European Enlightenment and Romanticism; the relation of late eighteenth-century culture to incipient capitalism and European colonialism; and how the modern market and modern aesthetic values were—and remain—inextricably entwined. The Haydn Economy weaves a vibrant material history of Haydn’s career, extending from the sphere of the ancient Esterházy court to his frenetic years as an entrepreneur plying between London and Vienna to his final decade as a venerable musical celebrity, during which he witnessed the transformation of his legacy by a new generation of students and acolytes, Beethoven foremost among them. Ultimately, Mathew asserts, Haydn’s historical trajectory compels us to ask what we might retain from the cultural and political practices of European modernity—whether we can extract and preserve its moral promise from its moral failures. And it demands that we confront the deep histories of capitalism that continue to shape our beliefs about music, sound, and material culture.
