Book The Jews Under Roman Rule Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jews Under Roman Rule Classic Reprint written by William Douglas Morrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews Under Roman Rule Jews - the people to whom Christianity was primarily addressed, and the Romans - the people who held together, under one common dominion, the various nationalities through which the Christian faith was destined to spread. In the execution of this taski have not carried the narrative beyond the final de struction of the remnants of the Jewish state under the Emperor Hadrian. After this date an entirely new chapter in Jewish life begins. Henceforth the Jews ceased to be a nation, and again became what they have since remained, simply a religious commu nity. The hope of being able to gratify their national aspirations by force of arms was gradually relinquished. Withdrawing from the broad current of the world's political activities, they began the construction of another Sacred Book, and committed to writing the immense mass of oral laws and traditions that had been accumulating for centuries in the schools of the scribes. The gigantic results of these peaceful labours was the Talmud. This was a form of activity which did not bring the Jews into collision with the civil power, and accordingly the attitude of the Romans towards them, in the period subsequent to the reign of Hadrian, underwent comparatively little change, and calls for little comment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews Under Roman Rule The epoch of which this volume professes to treat embraces a period of about three hundred years(B.C. 164 to A.D.135), and has an intimate bearing on one of the most momentous turning-points in the history of the world. The first half of this period is almost co-incident with the formation of the great confederation of Mediterranean states under the supremacy of Rome - a confederation which constituted the most important external preparation for the success of Christianity; the second half is co-incident with the birth development and primitive organization of the Christian faith. These are events which gave a new direction to the history of humanity in the West; they are the starting-points of a fresh era in the life of the world; unlike some of the records of antiquity, an account of them is not merely a revelation of what has transpired in the past; at the present moment they are still exercising an immense influence on the deepest sentiments of mankind. Book The Jews under Roman Rule from Pompey to Diocletian

Download or read book The Jews under Roman Rule from Pompey to Diocletian written by E. Mary Smallwood and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is remarkable that Judaism could develop given the domination by Rome in Palestine over the centuries. Smallwood traces Judaism's constantly shifting political, religious, and geographical boundaries under Roman rule from Pompey to Diocletian, that is, from the first century BCE through the third century CE. From a long-standing nationalistic tradition that was a tolerated sect under a pagan ruler, Judaism becomes, over time, a threat that needs to be repressed and confined against a now-Christian empire. This work examines the galvanizing forces that shaped and defined Judaism as we have come to know it. This publication has also been published in hardback, please click here for details.

Download or read book The Jews Among the Greeks and Romans Classic Reprint written by Max Radin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews Among the Greeks and Romans It is a counsel of perfection that any historical study should be approached with complete detachment. To such detachment I can make all the less claim as I freely admit an abiding reverence for the history of my own people, and, for the life of ancient Greece and Rome, a passionate affection that is frankly unreasoning. At no place in the course of the following pages have I been consciously apologetic. It is true that where sev eral explanations of an incident are possible, I have not always selected the one most discreditable to the Jews. Doubtless that will not be forgiven me by those who have accepted the anti-semitic pamphlets of Willrich as serious contributions to historical research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews of Eastern Europe The dispersion of the Jews had already begun long before St. James wrote his Epistle to the sojourners of the Dispersion. They had already reached the more important cities of the Roman Empire. With the fall of Jerusalem and the deportation of a great part of the Jews, their numbers everywhere vastly increased. As Slaves at first, and afterwards as freedmen, they penetrated into the more remote parts of the Empire. Wherever the Roman built his roads and opened up the way to commerce, there the Jew followed. This brought them into the lands of Western Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, From the War With Rome to the Present Time It will, of course, be answered that to charge our Lord with blasphemy and setting up of a strange god, is simply to beg the whole question at issue between Jew and Christian. Indeed, considering that the Hebrew Scriptures distinctly declare the Messiah to be God1 (psa. Xlv. 6; Isa. Vii. I4: ix. 6, etc), according to this view of the matter, at what ever period He might come, it must be the duty of the Jews to put Him to death, as soon as He declared His true character. It might be asked-how were the Jews to know that Jesus was really what He proclaimed Himself? Our answer is, that in the fulfilment of prophecy in Him, in the exercise of His miraculous powers, and the superhuman holiness of His teaching, they had sufficient evidence that He was indeed the Christ. They had, in fact, t/ize evidence of it which Divine wisdom accounted sufficient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
