Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tub Taam: Or a Vindication of the Jewish Mode of Slaughtering Animals for Food Called Shechitah His letters of credentials from leading Rabbis of Europe secured for him shortly after his arrival in this country the position of supervising some of the largest abbatoirs in New York. He taught many pupils shechitah and his seal was recognized by the Orthodox Jews of New York. In 1866, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, through its President, Mr. Henry Bergh, declared the Jewish method of slaughtering animals to be "cruelty - needlessly inflicted." But Rabbi Friedman's able defense in his treatise "Tub Taam" convinced the Society of the error of their judgment. "Tub Taam" was originally published in Hebrew and testimonials commending the book and indorsing the author's careful treatment of the subject were received from leading rabbis and physicians of Europe and America. In 1876, the book was translated by Prof. Buttenwieser into English, but owing to the illness of the author the translation was never placed on sale. The Book remains a lasting monument to his reverent love for our ancestral faith and customs; a testimony to his scholarship and an evidence of his zeal for the religion in which he was born, for whose interests he labored faithfully all his life and as a servant of which he yielded up his breath. Shakespeare tells us that the "Evil which men do lives after them, while the good is oft interred with their bones" It is a satisfaction to know that the opposite is likewise true. This little book, long forgotten, rises, as it were, out of oblivion to resurrect and bless the memory of the earnest writer and the careful translator. It had served its purpose in removing the mistaken, but sincere, opposition of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and preserved for the orthodox Jew the right, so precious to him, of killing the animal according to the prescribed Jewish formula. Book Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism

Download or read book Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism written by Jordan Rosenblum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food often defines societies and even civilizations. Through particular commensality restrictions, groups form distinct identities. This identity is enacted daily, turning the biological need to eat into a culturally significant activity. In this book, Jordan D. Rosenblum explores how food regulations and practices helped to construct the identity of early rabbinic Judaism. Bringing together the scholarship of rabbinics with that of food studies, this volume first examines the historical reality of food production and consumption in Roman-era Palestine. It then explores how early rabbinic food regulations created a distinct Jewish, male, and rabbinic identity.

Book Comparing Judaism and Christianity

Download or read book Comparing Judaism and Christianity written by E. P. Sanders and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few scholars have so shaped the contemporary debate on the relation of early Christianity to early Judaism as E. P. Sanders, and no one has produced a clearer or more distinctive vision of that relationship as it was expressed in the figures of Jesus of Nazareth and Paul the apostle. Gathered for the first time within one cover, here Sanders presents formative essays that show the structure of his approach and the insights it produces into Paul’s relationship to Judaism and the Jewish law. Sanders addresses matters of definition (“common Judaism,” “covenantal nomism”), diversity (the Judaism of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Diaspora), and key exegetical and historical questions relative to Jesus, Paul, and Christian origins in relationship to early Judaism. These essays show a leading scholar at his most erudite as he carries forward and elaborates many of the insights that have become touchstones in New Testament interpretation.
