Book John Stuart Mill

Download or read book John Stuart Mill written by Timothy Larsen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill observed in his Autobiography that he was a rare case in nineteenth-century Britain because he had not lost his religion but never had any. He was a freethinker from beginning to end. What is not often realized, however, is that Mill's life was nevertheless impinged upon by religion at every turn. This is true both of the close relationships that shaped him and of his own, internal thoughts. Mill was a religious sceptic, but not the kind of person which that term usually conjures up. The unexpected presence and prominence of spirituality is not only there in Mill's late, startling essay, 'Theism', in which he makes the case for hope in God and in Christ. It is everywhere—in his immediate family, his best friends, and his vision for the future. It is even there in such a seemingly unlikely place as his Logic, which repeatedly addresses religious themes. John Stuart Mill: A Secular Life is a biography which follows one of Britain's most well-respected intellectuals through all of the key moments in his life from falling in love to sitting in Parliament and beyond. It also explores his classic works including, On Liberty, Principles of Political Economy, Utilitarianism, and The Subjection of Women. In this well-researched study which offers original findings and insights, Timothy Larsen presents the Mill you never knew. The Mill that even some of his closest disciples never knew. This is John Stuart Mill, the Saint of Rationalism—a secular life and a spiritual life.

Book Why do Men Starve Who Was Jesus Christ Poverty Its Effects on the Political Condition of the People and other Essays

Download or read book Why do Men Starve Who Was Jesus Christ Poverty Its Effects on the Political Condition of the People and other Essays written by Charles Bradlaugh and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that human beings are starved to death, in a wealthy country like England, with its palaces, its cathedrals, and its abbeys; with its grand mansions, and luxurious dwellings, with its fine enclosed parks, and strictly guarded preserves; with its mills, mines, and factories; with its enormous profits to the capitalists; and with its broad acres and great rent rolls to the landholder? The fact that men, old, young, and in the prime of life; that women, and that children, do so die, is indisputable. The paragraph in the daily journals, headed "Death from starvation," or "Another death from Destitution," is no uncommon one to the eyes of the careful reader. In a newspaper of one day, December 24th, 1864, may be read the verdict of a London jury that "the deceased, Robert Bloom, died from the mortal effects of effusion on the brain and disease of the lungs, arising from natural causes, but the said death was accelerated by destitution, and by living in an ill-ventilated room, and in a court wanting in sanitary requirements;" and the verdict of another jury, presided over by the very Coroner who sat on the last case, "that the deceased, Mary Hale, was found dead in a certain room from the mortal effects of cold and starvation;" as also the history of a poor wanderer from the Glasgow City Poor House found dead in the snow. In London, the hive of the world, with its merchant millionaires, even under the shadow of the wealth pile, starvation is as busy as if in the most wretched and impoverished village; busy indeed, not always striking the victim so obtrusively that the coroner's inquest shall preserve a record of the fact, but more often busy quietly, in the wretched court and narrow lane, up in the garret, and down in the cellar, stealing by slow degrees the life of the poor. Why does it happen that Christian London, with its magnificent houses for God, has so many squalid holes for the poor? Christianity from its thousand pulpits teaches, "Ask and it shall be given to you," "who if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?" yet with much prayer the bread is too frequently not enough, and it is, alas I not seldom that the prayer for bread gets the answer in the stone of the paved street, where he lays him down to die. The prayer of the poor outcast is answered by hunger, misery, disease, crime, and death, and yet the Bible says, "Blessed be ye poor." Ask the orthodox clergyman why men starve, why men are poor and miserable; he will tell you that it is God's will; that it is a punishment for man's sins. And so long as men are content to believe that it is God's will that the majority of humankind should have too little happiness, so long will it be impossible effectually to get them to listen to the answer to this great question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JESUS THE CHRIST BY JAMES E. TALMAGE Written under request from the First Presidency, and later approved by the Prophet, First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles, Jesus the Christ is perhaps one of the most accurate and comprehensive books written on the Savior’s life, ministry, teachings and atonement. Uniquely written inside the Salt Lake City temple, Jesus the Christ takes an ahead-of-its-time approach to the life of the Savior by including the antemortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyond. The author describes this book as “a powerful and well directed beam, [which] illumines many dark passages of ancient construction.” As an inspired writing, the author acknowledges the constant companionship of the “spirit of sacredness” throughout his labor of love in writing this book. Like the prophets of ancient and modern days, Elder Talmage reverently envokes the spirit of sacredness to be with all the readers of this volume. Elder Talmage died in 1933, thus making this writing a “Voice from the Dust.” In recognition of 100 years since its original publication, Latter-day Strengths is well-pleased to present this edition of Jesus the Christ.
