Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jeannette: And a Complete and Authentic Narrative Encyclopedia of All Voyages and Expeditions to the North Polar Regions; Containing a Complete Account of the Most Remarkable Examples of Heroism, Endurance and Suffering on Record The universal interest in Arctic exploration which has neen aroused by the melancholy fate of the Jeannette, her commander, and so large a portion of her crew, has suggested the writing of this work. While this has been its direct and immediate inspiration it was deemed advisable to enlarge its Scope so as to include similar and correlated voyages from the earliest period. It has been written in sympathy with the heroic efforts of the explorers who in every age have labored in this field for the enlarge ment of human knowledge. The general interest in literature of this kind is legitimate and even commendable. A wholesome and bracing intellectual tonic, it energizes the mind. The reading of such works cannot produce other than good results. Free from the tedium of minute chronology and burdensome detail, they possess all the most attractive elements of history, biography and travel - a triple combination unsurpassed even by poetry, fiction or romance. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A white-knuckle tale of polar exploration and heroism in the Gilded Age from the New York Times bestselling author of Blood and Thunder and Ghost Soldiers. • “A splendid book in every way…a marvelous nonfiction thriller.” —The Wall Street Journal On July 8, 1879, Captain George Washington De Long and his team of thirty-two men set sail from San Francisco on the USS Jeanette. Heading deep into uncharted Arctic waters, they carried the aspirations of a young country burning to be the first nation to reach the North Pole. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the Jeannette's hull was breached by an impassable stretch of pack ice, forcing the crew to abandon ship amid torrents of rushing of water. Hours later, the ship had sunk below the surface, marooning the men a thousand miles north of Siberia, where they faced a terrifying march with minimal supplies across the endless ice pack. Enduring everything from snow blindness and polar bears to ferocious storms and labyrinths of ice, the crew battled madness and starvation as they struggled desperately to survive. With thrilling twists and turns, In The Kingdom of Ice is a spellbinding tale of heroism and determination in the most brutal place on Earth.

Book The Voyage of the Jeannette

Book excerpt: "Setting sail out of San Francisco in July 1879 with provisions for three years, this expedition had been lavishly equipped and fitted out by Mr. Gordon Bennett, the proprietor of the New York "Herald", best known for his sponsorship of Stanley's expedition in search of Livingstone. De Long intended to sail through the Bering Strait and to approach the Pole by way of the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island. Two years passed, and all that was known of the 'Jeannette' was that she had passed the Strait and had been seen in the vicinity of Wrangel Island. During those two years she had fought gallantly against the ice, but in spite of every effort the ship was crushed by the floes. Her crew escaped in three boats, but some perished in a storm, and most of those who reached land died from starvation and exposure. One of the greatest and most tragic tales from this period of exploration and one that vividly displays the perils these explorers put themselves through in the name of science. Pieces of the wreckage of the ship later washed up on the south-west shores of Greenland. The discovery of these fragments gave pause to another explorer, Dr. Fridtjof Nansen, who from this evidence postulated the existence of a vast current beneath the polar ice. On the basis of this theory he developed a plan to geta ship stuck fast in the ice and allow the current to drift the ship to the pole; the plan and its outcome were the subject of Nansen's FARTHEST NORTH."--Abebooks website
