Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, the New World-Power: Being a Detailed Account of the Progress and Rise of the Japanese Empire The facts and figures showing this progress have been obtained almost exclusively from official sources, and the writer is under obligations to the heads of nearly every department of the Japanese Government, not only for the latest printed documents but for specially prepared reports containing the most recent information. The assistance thus freely given, and the aid accorded by the other authorities consulted, have been acknowledged as far as possible in the chapters of the book; and it is only necessary to repeat here that this generous help has been fully appreciated. In printing the proper names it will be noticed that in transliterating from the Japanese the use of accents has been avoided. The best authorities agree that it is not practicable to give a correct representation of the Japanese sounds by the use of roman letters accented or unaccented and as the practice in English printing varies, accented letters have been altogether avoided, and the most familiar English forms of trans literation have been adopted. Thanks are due to The Times for permission to include portions of articles contributed by the author to that journal. Advantage has been taken of this privilege in Chapters XLI, XLIV, XLVII, XLVIII XLIX. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of the Japanese Empire During the last ten years I have been making a collection of Japanese Birds, and have accumulated a carefully selected series of more than two thousand skins, out of the many thousands that have passed through my hands. I am indebted to Captain Blakiston for the most interesting of these specimens, some of which were in the Swinhoe Collection, whilst others were sent to me from time to time during the many years' residence of Captain Blakiston at Hakodadi. I am also indebted to the late Mr. Harry Pryer for many skins of birds from Southern Japan, and at his death, after many years' residence in Yokohama, when his collection came into my hands, I began to prepare my notes on Japanese Birds for the press. I have also to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. Heywood Jones for a small collection of skins from Fuji-yama, and to Mr. Ringer, of Nagasaki, for some very rare birds from Kiu-siu. I am much indebted to the Curator of the Norwich Museum for arranging their valuable collection of Japanese skins so that it could be examined without difficulty; and I have to thank Dr. Stejneger of Washington for valuable information respecting the interesting collections made in Southern Japan by Messrs. Jouy and Smith. I also take this opportunity of thanking the Curators of the Museums of Leyden, Bremen, Frankfort, Paris, Vienna, Philadelphia, and Washington for showing me many interesting birds from the Japanese Empire. Book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Japan Classic Reprint written by R. Van Bergen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. The schol ar will, I trust, pardon me for apparent anachronisms and omissions. For lack of space or literary skill, I have had, in some cases, to con dense with a brevity painful to a lover Of fairness and candor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire of the East: A Simple Account of Japan as It Was, Is and Will Be I have deemed it necessary to deal at some length with the various phases of Japanese art, which it is no exaggeration to say has permeated the whole nation so that the Japanese may truthfully be termed the most artistic people in the world. Of course it is impossible to deal exhaustively in a work of this kind with Japanese art. I have, however, endeavoured to describe the principal art industries of the country and to set forth what I may term the catholicity of art in Japan. I have also dealt with the question how far art has been affected by the Europeanising of the nation which has taken place of recent years, and the effect thereof. The religion of the Japanese, the Constitution, the home life of the people, the Army and Navy, the financial position of the country are all subjects treated as fully as possible, inasmuch as they are matters essential to be understood in order to realise the Japan of to-day. The Japan of the future I have attempted to forecast in two final chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Japan, Vol. 1: A Record of Modern Life in the Island Empire Two babes the mother bore at one rich birth, Twin hearts that beat to her low notes of love, Twin souls that leapt to each heroic call, As generous sword to snatch the Treasure-trove Of hard-won honour. And our Mother Earth, Rocking the twain in the deep rise and fall Of her green bosom, sang proud litanies, Promised them beauty, conquest, empire, brain and heart. And woman's faith, and towering pride of race. Too great to rule together, worlds apart She set them, in the silver of the seas. Yet heart calls heart, as erst upon the breast That bore these glories, sovereign in their place, The Island Empires of the East and West. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Empire of the East: Or Japan and Russia at War, 1904-5 Examining and guarding myself, I have sought to set out naught but that which is true, well considered, and free from bias. To hold prejudice is as to nurse the quality of revenge - to entertain a spirit that, in man or nation, warps and dwarfs the judgment, wasting the blessed capacities of being. Nathless, this also I trust is right, that my first and best service is to place plainly before my countrymen whatever affects the welfare of the British Empire and the race. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress in the Mikado's Empire This book will be best appreciated by those who are best informed. It must not be measured by its sise, for it has been compressed deliberately. In eight tightly-packed chapters, Dr. Armstrong has managed somehow to place before us in a clear, vivid and living way the story of Japan from those semi mythical, semi-historical times when Japan began to be, down to these aspiring, expanding, mighty, and yet dangerous days of the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Japan: A Record of Modern Life in the Island Empire In the following letters, written during a three years' residence in Tokyo, no method was followed beyond the interests and the fancy of the moment; no detailed description was attempted of Japan, her history and her customs and her philosophies. In the times when every foreigner saw the same sights in the Island Empire, obtained the same stereotyped glimpses of the people's life, and was contented with the half-comprehended information given by his guide, it was easy, and alas! fashionable, to describe the "toy country" and its "fairylike" inhabitants with glib security in large print. Those times are gone for ever. Japan has set the doors of her secret shrines ajar, so that we can at any rate take the first step in wisdom, and realise how little we know. Book History of the Empire of Japan

Download or read book History of the Empire of Japan written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Empire of Japan: Compiled and Translated for the Imperial Japanese Commission of the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, U. S. A., 1893 The mountains of the main island are, for the most part, volcanic. Many Of them are still in an active condi tion. The active volcanoes number 170, and the ranges comprising them stretch across the extent of the country. Mines and mineral springs consequently abound. They are to be found in about 388 places, independently Of Hokkaido. The most celebrated thermal springs are at Kusatsu and Ikaho in Kozuke; at Hakone in Sagami; at Atami in Izu; at Arima in Settsu; at Shirosaki in Tajima, and at Dogo in Iyo. Frequency of earthquakes results from this abundance of volcanoes. Minor shocks average from thirty or forty to several hundreds annually, and of severe shocks history shows that there have been some two or three in each century, entailing overthrow of dwellings, destruction of human and animal life, crumbling away of mountains and interchanges Of seas and lands.
