Book The James and Younger Brothers

Download or read book The James and Younger Brothers written by J. A. Dacus and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast guns and hold-ups--the story of the James and Younger boys The Wild West frontier of the United States of America is the place of modern legends, though their origins mostly come from a comparatively short period of time following the American Civil War during the westward expansion of 'Manifest Destiny' to the dawn of modernism in the late 19th century. Nevertheless, the names heroes and villains from this era immediately caught the public imagination, and have remained with us thanks to numerous books, films and television series' featuring them. Among these outlaws, there were few more notorious than the James-Younger Gang. The gang hailed from Missouri, a bloody battleground with Kansas during the civil war, wracked by the deprivations of Union Jayhawkers and Confederate Bushwackers. It was from this latter partisan group that the James-Younger outlaw alliance grew. The end of the war brought hard times for these men, and the transition to gun-slinging, criminal killers seemed inevitable. The gang's membership changed over the years, but its notable members were, of course, brothers Cole, Jim, John and Bob Younger and the James brothers, Frank and the infamous Jesse. The gang robbed trains, stagecoaches and banks in Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and West Virginia between 1868 and Jesse James's death in 1882--when he was shot in the back by Robert Ford. This is the story of these violent men and their troubled times. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Download or read book Ride the Razor s Edge written by Carl W. Breihan and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1992-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the legendary adventures of two of the Wild West’s most notorious outlaws in this historical biography. Like their partners in crime Frank and Jesse James, the Younger Brothers have been glorified in the lore of the Wild West. Famous for their daring train and bank robberies, and immortalized in the film The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, the Younger brothers—Cole, James, John, and Bob—came to symbolize the grit and cunning of the nineteenth century frontier. Ride the Razor’s Edge chronicles their adventures while placing them in their wider historical context. From fighting in the Civil War alongside William Quantrill and his band of guerrillas to their famous raid in Lawrence, Kansas, to their first bank robbery in Liberty, Missouri, the Youngers became heroes of the people—and foes of their state. Using family archives, personal letters, and interviews with surviving family, author Carl W. Breihan presents an authoritative and captivating story from their days with the Confederacy to Cole’s and James’s years in a Minnesota prison, and Cole Younger's fight to adapt to life after his pardon.

Book James the Brother of Jesus

Download or read book James the Brother of Jesus written by Robert H. Eisenman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James was a vegetarian, wore only linen clothing, bathed daily at dawn in cold water, and was a life-long Nazirite. In this profound and provocative work of scholarly detection, eminent biblical scholar Robert Eisenman introduces a startling theory about the identity of James—the brother of Jesus, who was almost entirely marginalized in the New Testament. Drawing on long-overlooked early Church texts and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Eisenman reveals in this groundbreaking exploration that James, not Peter, was the real successor to the movement we now call "Christianity." In an argument with enormous implications, Eisenman identifies Paul as deeply compromised by Roman contacts. James is presented as not simply the leader of Christianity of his day, but the popular Jewish leader of his time, whose death triggered the Uprising against Rome—a fact that creative rewriting of early Church documents has obscured. Eisenman reveals that characters such as "Judas Iscariot" and "the Apostle James" did not exist as such. In delineating the deliberate falsifications in New Testament dcouments, Eisenman shows how—as James was written out—anti-Semitism was written in. By rescuing James from the oblivion into which he was cast, the final conclusion of James the Brother of Jesus is, in the words of The Jerusalem Post, "apocalyptic" —who and whatever James was, so was Jesus.

Book Tortured Soul

Download or read book Tortured Soul written by Marley Brant and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those interested in the history of the infamous Younger Brothers of Missouri know eldest brother Cole’s story. Or at least they think they do. Cole told it enough times. Yet his autobiography, his dozens of interviews, and the stories he told to his friends and family members unfortunately tell a story quite different from researched history of the same times and events. John and Bob died young and never had the opportunity to tell their side of it all. And brother Jim remained silent. Until now. Tortured Soul: Jim Younger in His Own Words finally reveals Jim’s memories, thoughts, and opinions. Although Jim’s recollections are also mired in selective memories and a certain distortion brought about by the passage of time, a damaged psyche, and a need to protect himself and those he loved, the story Jim tells is based on his history and his desire to set Cole’s tall tales in their proper perspective.

Book The Outlaw Youngers

Download or read book The Outlaw Youngers written by Marley Brant and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Youngers—Bob, Cole, Jim, and John—tested the boundaries of the violent and turbulent post-Civil War society in which they lived. The author investigates the events from the Border and Civil Wars which forged their characters, their intricate relationships, the innovative train and bank robberies in which they participated, and their decades-long fight for freedom. Brant’s extensive research includes unpublished accounts from family members, the families of their enemies and victims, and hundreds of revealing historical documents. The story of the Youngers as more than the folklore figures they have grown to be demonstrates that often the truth is more fascinating than the fiction.

Book Brothers and Sisters in Adoption

Download or read book Brothers and Sisters in Adoption written by Arleta James and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What about the kids already there? How do they do when a child with a challenging past joins a family by adoption? When experienced parents decide to adopt an older child or a sibling group, they jump through all kinds of bureaucratic hoops â?? background checks, interviews, group meetings, reading assignments, classes, etc. But most often the typically developing children these adults are already parenting (whether through birth or adoption) are left out of the process, informed that a new kid is coming, and simply expected to â??adjustâ?? to the addition of another sibling. The addition of a child with a history of neglect or trauma cannot be a seamless transition. The expectations of everyone involved â?? parents, new siblings, and, yes, professionals facilitating the adoption â?? must be realistic, taking into account that the new child will need special attention that may take away time and attention from the already resident kids, that family life is likely to be turned topsy turvy until appropriate counseling and support are in place, that relationships will change. Therapist Arleta James is certainly not the first person to recognize this, but she is the first to do something about it. Brothers and Sisters in Adoption offers insights and examples and sturdy, practical, proven tools for helping newly configured families prepare, accept, react, and mobilize to become a new and different family meeting the practical, physical and emotional needs of all its members. These well prepared and supported families are the ones who thrive!
