Usain Bolt may be the most recent and the most spectacular Jamaican practitioner of the art of speed, but he and Shelly-Ann Fraser stand on the shoulders of giants of both genders, heirs to a pedigree that goes back at least a hundred years to the teenaged Norman Manley and before. For years before the explosion of "Lightning" Bolt on the Beijing Olympics track, the consistent speediness of men and women from this small island had been the subject of serious and humorous speculation, pride and "su-su". What is the "gold" that is mined so consistently by Jamaican sprinters that permits the little country to claim a place among the top five countries, measured in terms of medals per capita of population, in almost every Olympics since the Second World War - and all on the basis of athletics, mostly the sprints (400 metres and under)? Can science explain it? Does the touchy area of genetics - even though, scientifically speaking, there's no such thing as "race" - explain it? For instance, all the current world record holders for the sprints - and most of the former for the past fifty years or so - have been born in the Americas, descendants of slaves of West African lineage. Book excerpt: This book is about the effect of U.S. Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA of 1996) and criminal deportation to Jamaica; the issues associated with 'deportees' or deported migrants resettlement and re-integration, and increased crime and violence in Jamaica which several 'high-ranking' police officers and policy-makers claimed deportees are responsible for. It also represents a dedicated attempt to bridge both lines of inquiry between increased criminal deportation and increased crime and violence in Jamaica over a period of time, wherein criminal deportees are constantly being blamed for the high murder rate and alarming crime figures in the country, placing deported migrants at a severe disadvantage. Based on six years of studies and notes-taking, I find that there are two types of deported migrants and over six different categories of us and I write in details about the categories. Some people are unreformed or dangerous and are involved in criminal activities based on a variety of factors, while the majority are law abiding citizens. Quite a few, including myself have tertiary degrees, meaningful skills, and 'first world' experiences that are in demand thus we can contribute to the society in positive ways, but we are highly marginalized. And the Government especially, and some uninformed people in the society discriminate against deported migrants (deportees) for arcane reasons. I write about the issues and challenges that some deported migrants have to deal with, the problems that some 'unreformed' or desperate ones have caused, the reasons why re-integration and meaningful support is necessary, how I was abducted or unlawfully arrested by the police and wrongfully prosecuted and unlawfully convicted by a state prosecutor, and how I was sentenced to an illegal term of imprisonment by a presiding judge and then wrongfully or inadvertently deported to Jamaica by the ICE even though I am a veteran of the US Army with a service-connected injury. The IIRIRA of 1996 is a reform of laws that are in need of careful revision in the interest of the 'American Justice' and fairness to non-US citizens who are permanent residents of the United States. A 'must read' edition.

He argues that the transformations in image and reality were not accidental or due simply to nature's bounty. They were the result of a conscious decision to develop this aspect of Jamaica's economy.Jamaican tourism emerged formally at an international exhibition held on the island in 1891. The international tourist industry, based on the need to take a break from stressful labor and recuperate in healthful and luxurious surroundings, was a newly awakened economic giant. A group of Jamaican entrepreneurs saw its potential and began to cultivate a tourism psychology which has led, more than one hundred years later, to an economy dependent upon the tourist industry.The steamships that carried North American tourists to Jamaican resorts also carried U.S. prejudices against people of color. "To Hell with Paradise" illustrates the problems of founding a tourist industry for a European or U.S. clientele in a society where the mass of the population is poor, black, and with a historical experience of slavery and colonialism. By the 1990s, tourism had become the lifeblood of the Jamaican economy, but at an enormous cost: enclaves of privilege and ostentation that exclude the bulk of the local population, drug trafficking and prostitution, soaring prices, and environmental degradation. No wonder some Jamaicans regard tourism as a new kind of sugar.Taylor explores timely issues that have not been previously addressed. Along the way, he offers a series of valuable micro histories of the Jamaican planter class, the origins of agricultural dependency (on bananas), the growth of shipping and communications links, the process of race relations, and the linking of infrastructural development to tourism.
