In her twenties, the author did just that - and got much more than she could ever have bargained for ... Raised in England of British-Australian parentage, the author sells her possessions and flies to her birthplace in Sydney with no solid plans or timetable in mind. Discovering by chance that she has another sister, a whole new world opens up: from living on a camel farm and picnicking with kookaburras, to paddock baths, unconventional lifestyles, City Farming and much, much more... But, before she returns to England, she has one last thing to do: to go in search of her grandmother ? the woman who left her daughter to be brought up by cruel nuns in an orphanage? This book never stops moving and will appeal to a wide range of readers, including lovers of travel writing, family history buffs and those interested in less conventional lifestyles. "Not so much a how-to of family history research, as what can happen when the results are in."

Book Walks Tracks and Trails of Queensland s Tropics

Download or read book Walks Tracks and Trails of Queensland s Tropics written by Derrick Stone and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland’s tropics provide numerous environments for enjoyable walking: lush rainforests, cloud-shrouded mountains, extinct volcanoes, savanna woodlands, and magnificent beaches on the coast and Great Barrier Reef islands. This book brings together more than 150 of the best walks, tracks or trails in Queensland’s tropics, located within the coastal strip between Rockhampton and Cooktown. Walks vary from short boardwalk strolls in the lowland rainforests of Daintree National Park to 4-6 day hiking and camping trips on Hinchinbrook Island. Other routes follow old gold miners’ and forestry tracks or coaching routes or feature historical sites, rivers, lagoons, geological and geographical formations or much earlier Aboriginal communication tracks where Dreamtime stories add a further dimension. Man-made environments of abandoned gold towns, heritage riverfronts, Art Deco streetscapes and Second World War installations also feature. Most routes are best completed during the ‘Dry’ season (May to October) and walked by moderately fit individuals. Most do not require specialist navigation or bushcraft skills. Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland’s Tropics highlights the best the region has to offer. Easy-to-interpret maps are included to help you navigate, and the book’s size makes it convenient to carry in the backpack.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden high in the Sierra de Guatemala mountain range of northeastern Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas is the northernmost tropical cloud forest of the Western Hemisphere. Within its humid oak-sweetgum woodlands, tropical and temperate species of plants and animals mingle in rare diversity, creating a mecca for birders and other naturalists. Fred and Marie Webster first visited Rancho del Cielo, cloud forest home of Canadian immigrant Frank Harrison, in 1964, drawn by the opportunity to see such exotic birds as tinamous, trogons, motmots, and woodcreepers only 500 miles from their Austin, Texas, home. In this book, they recount their many adventures as researchers and tour leaders from their base at Rancho del Cielo, interweaving their reminiscences with a history of the region and of the struggle by friends from both sides of the border to have some 360,000 acres of the mountain declared an area protected from exploitation—El Cielo Biosphere Reserve. Their firsthand reporting, enlivened with vivid tales of the people, land, and birds of El Cielo, adds an engagingly personal chapter to the story of conservation in Mexico.

He is Ramon Cordes, the man many consider the greatest, and perhaps last, romantic revolutionary of our time. Cordes has been betrayed. But by whom? Was it Marguerite, the only woman he has ever loved? Was it Rojos, the Party leader who shares power with no one? Or was it Ramon himself—betrayed by his doubts, by his own mocking intelligence? With the same overwhelming force and savage eloquence that characterized his great Spanish Civil War novel, Hermanos!, William Herrick involves us in the relentless hunt for Ramon Cordes. The Last to Die is a uniquely contemporary and unforgettable story of the hunted and the hunters—and the violent destiny that awaits the man who chooses to live according to his own morality.
