Book The Italian System of Bee Keeping Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Italian System of Bee Keeping Classic Reprint written by Arthur J. Danyell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian System of Bee Keeping Having been asked to edit the following notes during their original publication in the columns of the Field newspaper and their republication in the present form, I have had much pleasure in acceding to the request. The principle of the Giotto hive is not new, it being a slight modification of the leaf hive designed by Huber. Its merit lies in its simplicity and cheapness, and in the admirable manner in which it is capable of being worked with the inexpensive honey extractor or smielatore. With regard to the home manufacture of the hive, I would suggest that anyone, living within reach of a saw mill, would find it much more advantageous to obtain the pieces for each frame separately, as rods 3ft. O 1/2 in. long, 1 3/6 in. wide, and 1 in. thick, could be procured cut to the exact size, and at a much cheaper rate at a saw mill than they could be cut out of planks. It gives me much pleasure to be the means of introducing so practical and useful a system of bee management to the English public. Book Dadant System of Beekeeping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dadant System of Beekeeping Classic Reprint written by Camille Pierre Dadant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dadant System of Beekeeping The worker bees hatch from the egg in 21 days, in ordinary circumstances. They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. The introduction of Italian bees has helped solve this problem in a positive manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most lucid call to action ever written about land-based beekeeping” from the author of The Backyard Beekeeper (Tammy Horn, author of Bees in America and Beeconomy). Backyard beekeepers everywhere agree: a successful colony is a thing of beauty. Thousands of beekeepers have started beekeeping thanks to Kim Flottum’s first book, The Backyard Beekeeper, and they have added to their repertoire of skills with The Backyard Beekeeper’s Honey Handbook. Now, Better Beekeeping answers the question, “What do I do now that I’m a beekeeper?” This book takes serious beekeepers past the beginning stages and learning curves and offers solutions and rewards for keeping bees a better way. Better queens, better winters, better food, and better bees await any beekeeper willing to take on the challenge of having the right number of bees, of the right age, in the right place, in the right condition, at the right time. “There are numerous beekeeping books on the shelves that instruct on ‘how to,’ but Better Beekeeping is a book that explores ‘why to,’ which is essential for this ever-changing world of beekeeping today.” —Jennifer Berry, research coordinator at the University of Georgia’s Honey Bee Research Lab, commercial queen, and columnist for Bee Culture magazine

Book The Apiary Or Bees Bee Hives and Bee Culture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apiary; Or, Bees, Bee-Hives, and Bee Culture: Being a Familiar Account of the Habits of Bees, and the Most Improved Methods of Management, With Full Directions, Adapted for the Cottager, Farmer, or Scientific Apiarian Our apology for preparing a bee book is a very simple one. We are so frequently applied to for advice on matters connected with bees and bee-hives, that it seemed likely to prove a great advantage, alike to our correspondents and ourselves, if we could point to a handy-book of our own, which should contain full and detailed replies sufficient to meet all ordinary enquiries. Most of the apiarian manuals possess some special excellence or other, and we have no wish to disparage any of them. Yet in all, we have found a want of explanations relating to several of the more recent improvements. It has, more especially, been our aim to give explicit and detailed directions on most subjects connected with the hiving and removing of bees; and also, to show how, by judicious application of the depriving system, the productive powers of the bees may be enormously increased. Book The Tears of Re

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gene Kritsky
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-10-08
  • ISBN : 0199361401
  • Pages : 159 pages

Download or read book The Tears of Re written by Gene Kritsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Egyptian mythology, when the ancient Egyptian sun god Re cried, his tears turned into honey bees upon touching the ground. For this reason, the honey bee was sacrosanct in ancient Egyptian culture. From the art depicting bees on temple walls to the usage of beeswax as a healing ointment, the honey bee was a pervasive cultural motif in ancient Egypt because of its connection to the sun god Re. Gene Kritsky delivers a concise introduction of the relationship between the honey bee and ancient Egyptian culture, through the lenses of linguistics, archeology, religion, health, and economics. Kritsky delves into ancient Egypt's multifaceted society, and traces the importance of the honey bee in everything from death rituals to trade. In doing so, Kritsky brings new evidence to light of how advanced and fascinating the ancient Egyptians were. This richly illustrated work appeals to a broad range of interests. For archeology lovers, Kritsky delves into the archeological evidence of Egyptian beekeeping and discusses newly discovered tombs, as well as evidence of manmade hives. Linguists will be fascinated by Kritsky's discussion of the first documented written evidence of the honeybee hieroglyph. And anyone interested in ancient Egypt or ancient cultures in general will be intrigued by Kritsky's treatment of the first documented beekeepers. This book provides a unique social commentary of a community so far removed from modern humans chronologically speaking, and yet so fascinating because of the stunning advances their society made. Beekeeping is the latest evidence of how ahead of their times the Egyptians were, and the ensuing narrative is as captivating as every other aspect of ancient Egyptian culture.

Book Top Bar Beekeeping

Download or read book Top Bar Beekeeping written by Les Crowder and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top-Bar Beekeeping is an offering designed to encourage beekeepers around the world to keep bees naturally by providing beekeeping basics, hive management and the utilization of top-bar hives. In recent years, beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests, such as varroa and tracheal mites, to the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs. More and more organically-minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a top-bar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers. Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free. Top-Bar Beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

Book A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings begins as Helen Jukes is entering her thirties and struggling to settle into her new job and home. Then friends gift her a colony of honeybees—a gift that, according to folklore, brings good luck—and Jukes embarks on the rewarding, perilous journey of becoming a beekeeper. Jukes writes about what it means to "keep" wild creatures and to live alongside beings whose laws of life are so different from our own. She delves into the history of beekeeping, exploring the ancient—and sometimes disturbing—relationship between keeper and bee, human and wild thing. And as her colony grows, the very act of beekeeping seems to open new perspectives, making her world come alive again. A beautifully wrought meditation on uncertainty and hope, feelings of restlessness and home, and how we might better know ourselves, A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings shows us how to be alert to these small creatures flitting among us that are yet so vital a force for the continuation of life.
