Book Stories From the Italian Poets Vol 1 of 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Italian Poets, Vol. 1 of 2: With Lives of the Writers The abstract of Dante, therefore, in these volumes (with every deprecation that becomes me of being sup posed to pretend to give a thorough idea of any poetry whatsoever, especially without its metrical form) aspires to be regarded as, at all events, not exhibiting a false idea of the Dantesque spirit in point of feeling and expression. It is true, I have omitted long tedious lec tures of scholastic divinity, and other learned absurdities of the time, which are among the bars to the poem's being read through, even in Italy (which Foscolo tells us is never the case) and I have compressed the work in other passages not essentially necessary to the forma tion of a just idea of the author. But quite enough re mains to suggest it to the intelligent; and in no instance have I made additions or alterations. There is warrant - I hope I may say letter - for every thing put down. It is probable that a prose translation would give a better idea of the genius and manner of this poet than any metrical one. Vol. I. P. 310. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian Novelists; Selected From the Most Approved Authors in That Language, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Earliest Period Down to the Close of the Eighteenth Century; Arranged in an Historical and Chronological Series, Translated From the Original Italian, Accompanied With Notes, Critical and Biographical At a period when so high a degree of literary interest and curiosity appears to be directed towards the early traditionary history of almost every people, as exhibited in its prose fiction and romance, little apology will, perhaps, be thought due: for the: appearance of the following work. Italy, to which all the more polished nations of Europe confess themselves to be, in many respects so largely indebted, will, in this point of view, likewise, be found to have attracted, with justice, our. gratitude and regard. In addition to the very ample researches of native historians, of Muratori, Crescimbeni, and Tiraboschi, (among the most volummous and exact writers of their age, ) the subject of Italian prose fiction has more recently employed the attention of living authors of the highest repute. Download or read book Rome s Italian Wars written by Livy, and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is a superb new translation of Books 6 to 10 of Livy's monumental history of Rome, covering the period when Rome, in a series of ever greater wars, imposed mastery over virtually the entire Italian peninsula. Livy paints vivid portraits of all the notable figures, such as young Manlius Torquatus, victor in a David-versus-Goliath duel with a Gallic chieftain, and Appius Claudius who built Rome's first major highway, the Appian Way. Livy's blend of factual narrative and imaginative recreation brings to life a key moment in the rise of Rome, and the one complete account we have, as the city passes from the mists of legend into the light of history. J. C. Yardley's translation gives a vivid sense of the energy, variety, and literary skill of Livy's great work. Dexter Hoyos's Introduction sets Livy in the context of Roman historiography and deftly explains why this period was so critical an era for the rise of Rome. The most up-to-date edition, drawing on the latest scholarship, this major work of Roman literature and history includes comprehensive notes that clarify problems of historical content, topography, and chronology, a detailed glossary of Roman technical terms, an appendix on the Roman legion of the time, and two maps."--Publisher's website.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 1185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors - Dante Alighieri, [Niccoláo] Machiavelli, and [Giovanni] Boccaccio - and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature."--Pub. desc.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Novels of Honore De Balzac, Vol. 1 of 1: Now for the First Time Completely Translated Into English It was by the fireside, in a mysterious, splendid retreat which no longer exists, but which will live in our memory, and whence our eyes discovered Paris, from the hills of Bellevue to those of Belleville, from Montmartre to the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile, on a morning bedewed with tea, and amid the thousand thoughts that arise and die out like rockets in your sparkling conversation, that you, prodigal of wit, threw under my pen that personage worthy of Hoffman, that bearer of unknown treasures, that pilgrim seated at the gate of Paradise, having ears to listen to the songs of the angels, and having no longer a tongue to repeat them, touching ivory keys with fingers bruised by the contractions of divine inspiration, and believing that he was expressing the music of Heaven to a bewildered audience. You have created Gambara, I have only clothed him. Let me render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar, regretting that you did not seize the pen at an epoch when noblemen ought to use it as well as their sword, in order to save their country. You may be forgetful of self, but you owe your talents to us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
